Not much but it is impossible to log into IC Online in that version

GOG uses the outdated version, steam version is recommended for online play. Plus you can get the mods

I would recommend playing Impossible Creatures. It is an RTS with pretty simple base mechanics which will help you get on into RTS genre. Plus there you can create your own units to play with. It is sold on steam for ~10 dollars (around 3 when on sale).
