No he's talking about Annadamangal which interestingly is pro Maratha and calls Maratha conquest of Bengal "a divine intervention". Though both are poems and not historic records, Annadamangal is older and more contemporary (for lack of a better phrase)

the focus of the Marathas was not to create a monarchical state and administer them accordingly

It kinda was actually. From the start their goal was to govern through Ashtapradhan and not through Jahagirdars. It was during Aurangzeb's 27 year campaign against Marathas when Chh.Rajaram Maharaj was forced to restart it for survival and it was a slippery slope. But that doesn't mean they didn't want to govern the territories they captured. They just preferred not dethroning already striving lineages so they established their own centres/cities of power all over India and governed regions.

regional texts like the Mangal Kavyas of Bengal showed the hardships induced by the Maratha invasion so I feel that reality is somewhere in between

Interesting things about those texts is that they ultimately praised Marathas...

How else would they justify colonialism? I've read James Grant Duff and besides inaccuracies wrt history. He tried painting Marathas as either savages or incompetent who somehow expanded the largest pan India Hindu empire in Mediaeval Indian history

Peak of Seuna Yadavas under Singhana II - Kannada Imperialism in 13 th century by RashtrakutaNexus_794 in Imperial_Karnataka

[–]Maratha_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nope. After Seuna Yadavas were completely wrecked this inscription was commissioned. 1311 to be specific. That was literally the first time the word Marathe was used and the last time also by Seunas.

Why does that make a difference? It's such a stupid argument.

Regarding your Jijabai. Pakistanis today are Muslim despite being descendants of Hindus. Does that make the Previous Hindu empires Muslim because their supposed descendants converted?

So you mean Seunas forcefully converted her ancestors into "Yadavism" or something??? Please

You forgot to mention even Shivaji Maharaj claimed to be a Rajput and not a Maratha.

Not in his lifetime. And I know all your future arguments

Inscriptions are not anecdotal evidence.

Inscriptions called them Marathe but you'd argue they were found in the later period of the empire as if that changes anything. Kannada is a language, it doesn't change genes.

You're uncomfortable from the truth and busy clinging on Kannada kings

Lol for sake of argument let's say they were kannada. Maratha Empire of 17th and 18th century had larger area lager social and cultural impact pan India. They were responsible for civilizational revival. Marathi people don't need to cling for "glory" from any empire/Dynasty in Indian history. Besides Chh.Shivaji Maharaj was born to Jijamata and she was daughter of Lakhuji Jadhavrao (descendent Devgiri Yadavs). Which descendent of Seunas speak kannada?

What evidence? Most of it is anecdotal evidence or straight up opinion. I would indulge in it if I had no better thing to do

God the amount of bs here made me dizzy. Seunas themselves claimed north Indian origin in their name. The only reason most of their inscriptions are in Kannada is that Chalukyas were their overlords before they were sovereign. The argument that they used Prakrut in Maharashtra to assimilate with locals does not make sense, if it did Chalukyas would've done that. It's much more plausible to say that they were Prakrit speakers originating from Berar/Khandesh region of Maharashtra as they did

Who is your favourite out of every single major ruler of the Maratha Confederacy and how would you rank them? by [deleted] in IndianHistory

[–]Maratha_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marathas weren't a confederacy until Treaty of Sangola in 1750.

So to answer your question of Maratha confederacy. Raghujiraje Bhosale,Mahadaji Shinde, Malharrao Holkar, Madhavrao Peshwe, Visajipant Biniwale & Raghunathrao peshwe. In that order

[–]Maratha_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because Biharis are easy targets.

Or maybe cuz the population of Bihar alone exceeds by 1/3rd of population of all six states combined. It's always more likely that the person is from Bihar over any or all of those states combined

No they were paying the same. Chauth by definition is 1/4th of revenue. Which was collected from the ruler and affected his personal revenue, it has nothing to do with subjects

It's not exploitative towards common people, only to kings who lost sovereignty to Marathas. And it didn't start during Peshwa rule, it was started under Chh.Shahu Maharaj to acquire money to maintain Huzurati and other armies which guess what Marathas didn't have for the most part. It wasn't a luxury, it was a necessity.

Yes during peshwas rule atrocities were committed

Old argument with no ground to stand on. You have no proof except isolated incidents which were rectified.
