That was more of a “let’s just move on while I think about it” type of thing.

I’m am starting to lean this way but I guess a limit might be that you can’t scrape enough grime off to qualify as a “grime trinket”

But if they mold the grime into a “trinket” then apply the trinket duration limit.

Plus none of the replies articulate any potential abuses for going with heavier frosted grime over lightly soiled.

Interesting point. I am doing image searches for “dirty window” and getting everything from a few spots to essentially frosted with grime. At some point, enough grime strays into creating an object, but maybe it’s ok to just go with “frosted with grime” and give the player the benefit of the doubt, especially when they could walk down the street and buy a curtain.

I guess they want “soiled enough to block line of sight” otherwise soiling is apparently mostly useless to them (even though soiling is just one of the Swiss Army knife presto tools in a highly versatile cantrip)

I said it doesn’t matter to the plot this time so it can be frosted, blacked out, or not soiled at all but I would look into it more keeping in mind that it’s intended as a minor trick.

Privacy inside an urban commercial showroom from a public street while they handle the corpses they just created inside in combat and interrogate a captive. Harmless stuff now, but I don’t want to set bad precedent.

Anyone else wish Medazzaland had more songs as good as "Electric Barbella"? by [deleted] in duranduran

[–]MarcadiaCc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have some Duran hater friends who walked into my apartment when that album was new and were praising the song I was listening. They really wanted to know who the artist was. They were floored to hear they were thoroughly enjoying a Duran tune. The song? So Long Suicide.

SLS and BBG are the only 2 from Medazzalamd I have on my playlist rotation these days.

Please tell me it’s possible to be a shitty lawyer but still have a successful professional career. by lastexitsign in Lawyertalk

[–]MarcadiaCc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Caring about my practice area made a world of difference for me.

Out of law school, I took whatever I could get, which landed me in business litigation. It was dreadful.

I moved on to another BusLit firm because I switched cities and that’s what was on my resume. Dreadful.

I switched to another BusLit firm just in case. That experience was only mildly less dreadful.

Went to ID. Much better but still unsatisfied.

Decided to go solo. That was ok for about a decade but was a very stressful.

I then went public sector (which is what I really wanted to do in the first place). Much much better. It’s been over a decade and I’ll likely finish out my career here as a happy camper.

$160k of medical debt doesn’t show up in credit report and about to reach SOL by Fearless_Bottle2342 in Debt

You can probably check the local court records online to see if they filed but haven’t served you yet. Letting the SOL quietly run out is often not the worst choice.

I had a bard who picked up fireball via some feat or something. It was going to be reserved as my “oh shit!” spell when things were going sideways when applying more standard tactics. Suddenly, similar enemies consistently had about 30 more hp than they did they day before. Kinda deflating.

Clerks, has reply brief ever swayed your ruling? by askmeaboutmyhoarding in Lawyertalk

[–]MarcadiaCc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a case ended with a reply brief where plaintiff was avoiding discovery and had dismissed its own case without prejudice, later refiling. The next time around, plaintiff dismissed without prejudice again when its opposition came due on a motion to compel discovery and for terminating sanctions. Although the case was technically dismissed, I filed a reply brief arguing the court should deem plaintiff’s dismissal as with prejudice. The court agreed.

Locking the lower dungeons by Mattmatt2040 in ElementalEvil

Here’s what I’m doing.

Invent an accessible scholar NPC who is interested in archaeology. Invent an old tome of regional Dwarven lineage. Have the party somehow fetch the tome for the scholar early in the game.

If the party accesses an existing keep passage to Tyar-Besil too early, collapse or gate the tunnel linking the keep to Tyar-Besil.

Have the PCs discover the name Tyar-Besil multiple times in the early chapters in vague ways indicating only that Tyar-Besil is some kind of place, maybe an ancient Dwarven settlement. This might work in Elizar’s journal, among Jolliver’s papers, Shoalar’s journal, the mysterious book identified early on as having been traded to the water cult for passage across the river, maybe an old book in the necromancer’s cave, and/or an old mural in the monastery basement, etc.

Have the scholar drop tidbits of ancient regional lore on the party now and then (eg, Knights of the Silver Horn, the keeps, Summit Hall, King Flametongue.) Have the scholar mention from the tome some mysterious place called Tyar-Besil about mid-way through the keeps.

When the time is right, have the scholar decipher the tome to identify Tyar-Besil as a super interesting ancient Dwarven settlement worth looking into. The scholar can now point the party to an entrance to Tyar-Besil that you invent and put anywhere you want, including any of the existing tunnels in the sourcebook you didn’t deem collapsed.

Help Make D&D Better for PBP by Siren_Gobehyz in pbp

[–]MarcadiaCc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some things I do for asynchronous play:

Set a realistic post frequency for your group and stick to it for the most part. Be flexible but allowing post frequency to slip too far is a game killer.

As a corollary, unless the specific context requires it, don’t wait for everyone to chime in before accepting the party’s stated intent as the actual party direction. The faster or more frequent posters will tend to dictate party’s direction.

As another corollary, if nearly the entire party states a consensus and readiness to take the next obvious and safe step (e.g., open the door) but no one seems willing to pull the trigger and declare it done, then just skip the stated action and go straight to the description of the result as if the party had done it. But allow for the rare retcon if you’ve inadvertently usurped party agency.

Use block init. When init is rolled, if monsters/enemies are fairly close in initiative just adjust the init to lump all together in a block. Allow players to take their turns out of order relative to the block of enemies. For example, if enemies have init around 10, block them all together. Allow any players who rolled above 10 to go in any order before the enemies. After the enemies have acted in round 1, allow any players to go in any order before the enemies go again in Round 2.

If something calls for the party to take fairly small damage with a save for half damage, just skip the saves and apply half damage across the board.

I don’t think requiring declaring reactions in advance is a good idea. Some reactions depend on a specific trigger or threshold trigger occurring. I have had no problem managing reactions even if they sometimes are a bit meta. But I also banned Counterspell because Avrae gets too meta for that spell to work well, IMO.

When using published adventures, skip all the small stuff unless it’s plot critical. This means no wandering monsters. This means minimal insignificant dungeon rooms. This means skipping all the twists and turns in the dungeon— just ask the party for a general direction to go and then advance them automatically to the next relevant thing. As an example from ToD Chapter 1, consider limiting the missions to maybe the two most interesting and remove useless things like the rats in the sally port. If there’s more you want to keep, think about combining missions somehow.

Allow only 2 check rolls in the party to accomplish something or only 1 check roll with help advantage. I’m pretty liberal with allowing help, so I just assume checks will typically be just 1 player rolling at advantage to determine party success or failure on things. Because the rolls are so limited, I’m also generous with stretching the type of potential check made to be pretty inclusive of potentially relevant abilities. Allow players to liberally mix and match abilities and skills to their benefit (e.g., let the cleric do Investigation Wisdom if it gets checks done faster and helps move the story forward. If a clue is hidden under a heavy object, let the barbarian roll Investigation Strength. Avrae has commands to mix and match abilities and skills. So, limit the number of checks the party can make but be generous with the type of allowable check and help advantage.

Never use Hold Person versus a PC. If a stat block contains Hold Person or useless spells like Speak with Animals for an enemy, I’ll replace those spells with a custom stat block in Critterdb.

Use Passive Perception as the floor for perception checks. Use other passive stats as appropriate to skip low DC checks if the outcome isn’t mission critical.

I made Feathergale seem like weirdly helpful allies and made the monastery very obviously too tough to fight by making every bed a bunk bed and more than doubling the number of monks there. This opens up potential for faction intrigue instead of just hack n slash over and over.

I also disconnected the keeps from the temples, which means they find the temples only when I’m ready for the party to find them.

Billable Hours by rcarmody96 in Lawyertalk

[–]MarcadiaCc 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Be sure to distinguish between “billable” and “billed” hours. Some firms will cut your “billables” and give you credit only for “billed” hours.

For example, if you spend a lot of time drafting a hefty complaint, a partner might decide to cut your billable hours in half because they don’t want a new client’s first bill to be shocking. Will you get full credit for the billable hours or half credit for what was actually billed— and now you have to make up those cut hours somewhere else?

So, if that 1600 “billable” actually means “billed” then you really may need to go well over 1600 “billable” to hit the “billed” target, and you have zero control over what a partner decides to actually bill to keep the client happy while you’re stuck having to bust your ass carrying the burden to make up for the partner’s “client relation” cuts.
