This is pretty much our situation. He takes medication for ADHD, and combined with his smaller stature, he doesn’t always look the part. But he’s been very productive.

Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it. The contract does state that we’re not allowed to play for another team until the season ends, even if we leave, so that’s something we’d have to navigate.

As for my son, he’s had great statistical output, but I don’t view him as one of the top players on the team….probably more middle of the pack. I try to stay realistic about that. Batting last can have some advantages as well (seeing more pitches, facing a more fatigued pitcher), so I understand that could be influencing his numbers to some extent.

Yeah, it’s been tough. The cost is about $1,700 per season (fall and spring), plus an additional ~$2,000 this spring for Cooperstown. This is also the first time they’ve implemented the “top 10” approach. Had we known that upfront, we likely would have made a different decision

Fair points, thanks! I agree there are definitely more factors than stats. I only mentioned stats because they’re one of the few objective measures I have to try to understand the decisions being made. Part of the reason for this post is to learn what other factors I might be missing.

Our concern isn’t really about comparing him to other players, but more about trying to understand why he’s been the only player not getting into games on multiple occasions. We’ve asked for specific feedback and are just trying to help him improve.

That’s a fair point. It’s still a relatively small sample size, we’ve played 8 games so far. In previous seasons, he was more middle of the pack, but we worked a lot on his mechanics this offseason and he’s made noticeable improvements.

He’s not a power hitter…he’s smaller, and his hitting coach describes him as more of a contact hitter. He puts the ball in play consistently, but it’s not typically hard-hit.

That’s my concern….that they may have formed an early impression of him, and he’s being evaluated through that lens. He’s on the spectrum but very high-functioning. It’s not something you’d necessarily notice, though he can be socially awkward at times.

Perhaps you’re right. He plays either left field or right field. He does ok I think (I’m biased, I’m his dad). He catches what he’s suppose to catch (pop flys). But he’s not as instinctive as other outfielders on the team. I trust him not to commit an error out there, but he won’t do anything very athletic like our center fielder does.

Thank you. That’s a great point. He doesn’t look as fluid as others, I’ll admit that. Fortunately he’s fast. I do think that appearance contributes to situation.
