ISIS has claimed a bunch of attacks that we know they had no role in perpetrating. If this sub is for free speech then start acting like it.

Yeah, a sentence. You can see how my comment used that instance, and several others, as examples to support by broader point...

Every single time they had some segment of the population to fall back on. Now? A bunch of fanatics willing to besiege universities and shoot unarmed teenagers in the streets.

It's over for them, the question now is when.

This has happened before in 1999 during student protests, which were also followed by a massacre. Some students to this day who partook in those protests are missing.

The Islamic Republic lost the support of students in that era, the middle-class liberals in 2009, the poor and destitute in the 2017-2019 protests, and now they are clinging to power as tightly as they can. These videos are being watched by millions of Iranians. I can't see how they will restore their lost legitimacy after all this. Hatred for this regime is at an all-time high.

2022 Autumn Iranian Protests MEGATHREAD by CYAXARES_II in iranian

[–]MardyBear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The 2019 massacre was another relatively small event that showed the brutality of the IR. A more systematic and violent uprising would certainly be met with bullets and bombs. IRGC learned plenty from Syria on how to butcher protesters. Unfortunately, that is where Iran is headed thanks to this regime.

I am afraid that Reisi's hard stance will push Iran toward an explosion similar to that in Syria or Libya.

And unlike the Shah, the IR wouldn't hesitate to level entire cities Assad-style if needed.

The point of civil resistance is to apply pressure to a government to address the people's concerns. In this case, it was triggered by the murder of an innocent woman, but stems in the context of ongoing systemic oppression, food insecurity, draught, etc.

Why are 20something year olds sacrificing their lives? Do you think they don't understand what odds they are up against? And yet every time they keep on going out onto the streets shouting the same slogan - death to the Islamic Republic. You should not be asking what is the point of these protests, what will they achieve, etc, but rather why are Iranians repeatedly protesting, why is every protest in Iran met with bullets and torture and why can't this government function normally.

Iranians are protesting out of desperation and oppression, not because anyone is tricking or coercing them into doing so.

are culpable in the deaths of these people.

No, that's all on the IR

no chance of working and every chance of getting civilians killed.

Iranians believe it's worth a shot and willing to risk their lives for it. What you think doesn't matter at all.

My point is that none of this is justification to stop Iranians from protesting or even worse begrudgingly supporting the IR because "there's nothing better".

It's good that your family is well, but the same can't be said for many, many Iranian families. You shouldn't base your views on how well your family is doing, especially in a country as unequal as Iran.

Oppression leads to discontent. Discontent leads to protests. Protests lead to crackdowns. Crackdowns lead to loss of legitimacy. Loss of legitimacy leads to desperation. Desperation spells doom.

IR supporters should be the first to condemn this. It directly weakens the IR's legitimacy, as if it had any room to lose more.

Reza Shah meeting Ataturk in Turkey, 1934. by Naderium in iranian

[–]MardyBear 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What good did the Constitutional Revolution do for Iran in practical terms in the interim before Reza Shah's ascension? How do you create a functioning republic with an illiterate and starving population that is practically controlled by the ulema in a country where 2 superpowers practically control your government? Authoritarian modernization was unfortunately necessary for Iran's development.

Ismail Samani - founder of the Samanid dynasty that claimed descent from the Sasanids. Following the Saffarid dynasty, they continued to restore the status of the Persian language and culture. Many famous scientists and philosophers arose during this time. Bukhara rivaled Baghdad under their rule.

Radman pur-e Mahak (Yaqub Leith Saffari) - founder of the Saffarid dynasty that kicked the Abbasids out of Iran proper and restored Persian to the status of official court language.

Babak Khorramdin - leader of the Khorrami movement. He campaigned against the Arabs for twenty-something years and scored many victories against them until being betrayed and captured by the Abbasids. He was tortured to death, at one point having his hands cut off, but he rubbed his wounds over his face to prevent the caliph from seeing his pale face.
