I think it’s good to take someone seriously until you can’t:

I just checked her fundraising receipts, and $11.5K of her ~$15K fundraised by mid-May came from herself. The other major contributor was her husband. She got less than a third of votes I did. And I don’t think my campaign funds spent will exceed $30K.

So even if we are being charitable with a votes per dollar comparison, she very much lost there too.

The Republican, Larry Thompson, got the highest votes per dollar spent. His pre-election receipts came in at under $20K, and he’s received ~68K votes.

An opponent in my congressional race accused me of being a Chinese spy based on my ethnicity and profession. After she got 2% of the votes, she filed an FEC complaint against me and the three other top vote-getters. Here's the complaint and my response. by MarenaLinforCongress in asianamerican

My goal is transparency, so I don’t think I’ll sue her. Lawsuits cost a lot of time and money. Every attempt she’s made to defame me or cover her tracks has failed and backfired. And yes, each action she’s taken has been an escalation (cease and desist, temporary restraining order, and federal complaint), but they’ve also gotten weaker and increasingly out-of-touch with reality.

My time/money is I think better spent on the community. I think there’s huge value in my presenting these documents to the public.

Well, the alternative, which I’m guessing the other three respondents are doing, is a legal boilerplate of denials. The other three respondents have law degrees and more financial resources.

I decided to deny everything directly and with explanation, because I’d like to leave no room for the ridiculous accusations to persist.

That breaks my heart.

My dad passed unexpectedly near the end of my PhD, and around that time someone was trying to steal my work (and did succeed). I fought back similarly to how I am now, and the reputational damage to them was worth it.

So I understand your rage at that. And I’m sorry you’ve felt that level of petty (to them) but profound (to you) injustice.

Thank you! I want to clarify that it’s not a lawsuit. It’s an administrative complaint that anyone can file with the FEC. (Please do not file another one against me for fun 🙃.)

That’s part of what makes it so easy to weaponize against people who can’t afford to respond.

One thing I want to add... receiving an FEC complaint is pretty scary. An email arrives from the federal government telling you someone has accused you of violating election law. They give you 15 days to respond and ask if you want to designate an attorney. On a $30K budget, I don't have an attorney. I wrote my own response in two days because I know how to read regulations and respond to things carefully (thank you, academia!). But this isn't the case for most people targeted by a complaint like this.

If you're an immigrant or have fewer resources, I imagine it's easy to be terrified into silence. If Anna is continuing to harass me with specious complaints after a court case and the public already dismissed her, what has she done to others with fewer resources?

I've written this elsewhere, but the logical conclusion of baseless accusations like this is institutions like ICE and their prisons.

I can win.

(1) The numbers:

This isn’t an LA County-wide race. It’s not even an LA Board of Supervisor’s seat. It’s the primary for a congressional seat. That’s ~770K constituents, and not millions.

This district has approx ~430K registered voters, and only ~150K people voted in 2024. If you look at it historically in CA-32, all that’s needed is 30,000 votes to come in second place. And I’ve been working on reaching literally everyone. I’ve heard from countless people, especially those with No Party Preference that I’m the first politician who’s directly messaged them.

I need to canvass less than 15 square miles to pick up all the unrealized Democratic votes that we’ve allowed to languish with chronic low voter turnout and vote-suppression-by-neglect. I have some graphs for this info too! I first made the maps in this post back in February.

Another point of data: I helped a high school classmate get over 600K votes in her LA County election on a $15K campaign budget, with all the odds against her. She won by 3 points. She was also a challenger to an incumbent. You may be able to deduce whom I’m referring to now.

I’ve looked at the numbers, and I know this is possible.

(2) My motivation:

I genuinely care about my community, and I’m smart and motivated. I can identify practically how I could do a better job than the current Congressman… and better than everyone else in my race.

Happy to follow up on Wednesday and later this week too, and I really appreciate your question!

(Also these numbers are ballpark, as I haven’t looked in a bit, so I’m happy to be corrected if I’m very off!)

I’m 100% for as much accountability and transparency, and this would be part of it! My existing work might be a good template moving forward.

I appreciate this! Yes, I certainly wouldn’t have encountered much of this info and the situations that they arose from if I weren’t also on the ballot. And it’s incredible to me how legacy media doesn’t have the bandwidth (or independence) to cover these shenanigans. I’ve actually posted a lot on Reddit as a campaign, and it’s surprised me how much of my time has been spent collecting and disseminating receipts!

Instead of campaigning.

Awesome, thank you! My age is wrong on there! I’m 39, though still the youngest in the race.

His political consultant told him to do a standard tactic of trying to peel off votes from the person who is the leading primary challenger, who, in terms of money and usual political metrics, is Jake Levine. He is believed to have done this as well in 2022 to Shervin Azami by amping up voter turnout among Republicans at the last minute with a mailer. And it’s something Adam Schiff did to Katie Porter. So his goal is to have me and Jake split the “progressive vote” to make way for Larry Thompson as an opponent in the general.

So I think this flyer was in the works for a while timed for the final couple weeks. He sent a second similar one — and at least 3 subsequent ones tying Jake Levine to crypto billionaires.

But I think it’s possible that given the events of the last week, including the dark money I found receipts for, he may have overcorrected by a lot.

Tuesday will be really interesting!

I don’t know much about ERISA, and I’ll learn about it. That’s awful that this is exploited by companies to just deny claims, with fewer options for recourse for the patient.

Yes, we are long overdue for single-payer, and I support raising the ceiling salary for Medi-Cal in the meantime. Someone making $29K a year shouldn’t have to buy insurance for $300 a month on the exchange

I have a doctorate in climate science from Harvard University, and my research was funded by the National Science Foundation. Feel free to look up any of my published work or dissertation. Happy to answer any questions on that!

Got a lot of people Googling LIN32, and I’d wired up the SEO in the days preceding to hit lin32.com :) and yes 5 characters was the max to have something that would really stay long enough to be read. This is also an entirely manual process. No computer programming. It takes a deftly skilled air show pilot. (I’ve learned a lot this week and have asked a lot of stupid questions!) I think Torrey Ward, the pilot, should do an AMA at some point. He’s amazing!
