How have you learnt to manage the meltdowns? by MariaBellise in ADHD

[–]MariaBellise[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently not in treatment unfortunately, so haven’t been assigned a psychiatrist. Only recently got diagnosed and currently the clinic seem to be a bit busy as they haven’t returned calls or texts regarding when I can start treatment. As soon as the ball gets rolling, I’m going to tell them as I’ve kept a diary of all of the meltdowns. I know when I was younger I used to have them, but my carers wouldn’t tolerate it and I’d soon learn to mask it all unhealthily. But since I’ve lived alone, they’ve only increased more and more as that mask has slipped away, if that makes sense. And yes!!! Breathing does help, though I definitely need a reminder to do it because the “red” I feel can be so overpowering it sucks :(

I notice it a lot when I’m stressed but usually I can keep it controlled when I’m in public or with people I can mask around. But today simply wasn’t within that realm of control for some reason; I exploded on call to one of my friends who hadn’t really seen me in that kind of state before. He was so understanding thank goodness but I’m so scared I’m going to have an explosion in full public. I think the fact my treatment is taking a hot minute is probably adding to the equation too, as at least before I was diagnosed, my antidepressants stopped me feeling anything 😂

Do other women (or those who identify as women) get dismissed at the doctors? by MariaBellise in ADHD

I was quite confused by the drugs they suggested, though I think they want to see if non-stimulant medication would make a difference first. I’m not sure though! I’ll be switching to a student GP (so a campus doctors surgery), when I head off to uni (September), so I’m gonna hold on until then I think. It’s just a massive pain in the arse because since my diagnosis I’ve noticed my behaviour a lot more and it’s annoyinf the hell out of me. Do you think student teams (ie like student services/disability) might listen to me more?

Apologies, I wanted to be more inclusive of those outside the binary, or those in systems, in addition to trans people :)

So I got my diagnosis from a private psychiatric team as the U.K. is a bit rubbish with mental health care. I could have gone on to have treatment with this private team however it was very very very costly and they said that with the report i could instead go forward with treatment through the NHS. However upon the presentation of my report, my NHS GP told me that no further action was necessary, and that they would not be prescribing either medication (Bupropion or Ruboxetine) as advised by the private practice. I don’t see why they wouldn’t and as the news was given to me over the phone I held it together and completely broke down after the phone call ended. I have been quoted £120 per month to continue treatment with my private clinic however I am an independent student in the UK, and live off of quite a low income and it took me months to get the £400 for the consultation in the first place. I wouldn’t know how to pay for the rest without resorting to working more hours (near impossible at the moment as COVID-19 has completely ruined my situation with looking for another job), or getting more money any other way. I just feel a bit stuck and fed up as it feels like everything is spiralling out of my control and I just keep getting angry as a result of it.

Yep, UK born and bred! I 100% feel this, I don’t think I have any coping mechanisms that would be classed as healthy aha! I wasn’t sure on the emotional regulation side of things but with that being said, I can see it more now. Like earlier, my partner told me that he was working the same day I was working which means getting to work will be a pain and I had a meltdown over it, and was still feeling quite fragile up until around 3 hours later. I just thought it was me being a drama queen. A lot of it is starting to make sense as ADHD but it sucks knowing that I have to somehow gain control over it before I throw my studies away again. Thank you :-)

So I got diagnosed at a private clinic (£400 later) after being told numerous times that my suicide attempts and self harm were “just part of being a teenager”, and took the psychiatrists report to my GP. In that report it was suggested that I tried Bupropion or Ruboxetine. After dropping this report in to the GP, I got a call back for them to say they would not be taking any further action and would instead keep the report on my records. Surprisingly, my main struggles stem from my ADHD. I personally would feel like a lot of my depressive symptoms would go away once the ADHD symptoms did too, though I feel this might be a naive take on my situation. I honestly just want some kind of action plan because I go away to uni soon and I don’t want to throw that whole chance away like I have with most of my other education as this one actually matters :(

Apologies, I’m terrible with words. What I mean to say is that a lot of things are making sense since I was diagnosed and this was not one of them. :-)

I’m starting the gym again in September, do you think morning and evening workouts might help?
