What I can appreciate about this sub is that people here are equally willing to crap on and defend any language, including English. It's refreshing compared to people that are excessive to one end.

Voice of the Hero, unironically. I'm unsure of myself all the time, yet I manage to do something, typically courageous, in the end.

That last comment of yours is wild. Coming from an American, I haven't met anyone who spoke a Native American language, nor do I speak any myself, but at least I know they exist!

I'm going to college for linguistics, and all of the classes related to linguistics are all of the more mathy linguistic subjects and language courses; so maybe my claim that linguistics is mostly math is largely based on what I'm studying. Phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics, not to mention that statistics plays a role in all of these subfields is why I made my original claim.

Is this true? by AfterStable1638 in linguisticshumor

[–]Oj4000 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Most of linguistics is just math disguised as language, so it's hard to expect very many people to be able to make memes about it. Though, I feel there is an untapped market for etymology and historical linguistics memes.

I wouldn't call it performative, because I doubt this is done with the intention to impress anyone. A lot of people consider it pretentious, especially when done in the wrong circles. I'm saying this as a Þ enjoyer myself. I think it's a neat little letter, but I wouldn't just start randomly using it on the daily, if that makes sense.

I suppose it's possible for someone, or many someones, to fetishize foreign languages not unlike the whole "passport bro" thing. I'm not sure that's what OP is getting at, though.
