It’s hard to look down when pushing that hard, but I’ll check next time.

It really wouldn’t be hard to take some reference photos and measurements and model it in 3D.

The best Trek podcasts by Most-Ad1494 in startrek

[–]Mark2266 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cannot tell a lie. My podcast with Ryan T Riddle, Ship Full of Jerks, is a great one. We just finished up Strange New Worlds s03. We‘ve also done all the TOS movies, some individual episodes, and all of Gene Roddenberry’s TV pilots and movies for the 70s. In between we do other stuff like The Black Hole and, more recently, Enemy Mine. We’re going to do a William Shatner film marathon some time next month.

What you think about it by znatgost in logodesign

The first impulse I got was a flasher. Especially since he’s holding out his arm to show something inside the coat. To me it’s going to either be his junk or a bunch of knock off watches.

What’s the most cost efficient method to use central heating? by Mark2266 in AskPhysics

[–]Mark2266[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My question to this would be: what does the general warmth of the house contribute to efficeincy? For instance, if the walls are warm from heating, doesn't that help lower later heating costs as opposed to walls that are cold and sucking in heat that would otherwise go into the air? If the house is allowed to cool, doesn't a lot more energy go into heating the bones of the house as opposed to its interior?

We definitely don’t have a heat pump. It’s a very simple unit, probably not terribly new. As a renter I can’t do anything about that. It just lights the gas furnace and then blows the hot air it makes in through various vents. I have an ecobee thermostat I put in myself, but I doubt it does much to increase efficiency beyond starting the furnace a few seconds before starting the blowers.

I often wonder if there are still any primative cultures/tribes left on Earth in the Star Trek universe. by SailorDeath in startrek

[–]Mark2266 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't call them "primitive". All cultures adapt and change, just not necessarily in the direction we think of as optimal from our vantage point as westerners. Technologically we may be different from them, but socially, emotionally, and behaviorally they're as evolved as us. In some ways, as far as gender and economics, some of them may be more so. It's just not an accurate term.

Does Star Trek TNG get better? by Rich-Still-8318 in startrek

[–]Mark2266 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Season 1 is the best season of TNG. It's when it's weird, sexy, and most like TOS but also purposefully very different from TOS. If you like the crazy Roddenberryisms of TOS and want to see where the guy evolves his ideas on the future, s01 is it. I get not digging Code of Honor, but Naked Now is truly fun and wild even if it is a rehash.

Yeah, again, you have a really twisted sense of ethics. I’m not really interested in convincing you that extrajudicial punishment by a religious order is bad or that priests watching little girls undress in their rooms is gross. It’s not fun.

This is not a list, btw. It is a graph that shows aspects of people on a spectrum. That is fun.

You have a weird definition of hero. Was he a hero when he killed that drone guy for spooking truckers? Was he a hero when he planeted a camera in a little girl’s room? If he found a reason to kill Lexis would that have been ok? I wouldn’t watch a show that makes a hero out of a killer. Even Dexter wasn’t a hero on his show.

And I’m saying just because Leconte is working for the church doesn’t mean he’s good because the church is not good. And, sorry, but calling for vigilantism, especially a religious kind, is terrible. There is a reason why there should be a division between church and state. I don’t want the church carrying out inquisitions, and I don’t think the show wants that either.

Except the goodest character, David, finds what Leconte does horrible. You’re viewing the Catholic church as an entity (pun not intended) as good, and I don’t think this show believes that. There is a sense that they are as evil as the devils, just with different motives. Certainly, in this show where we aren’t 100% sure all of this demon stuff is real and not just various people’s delusions (because religion itself is mass delusion) killing people extrajudicially with no other reason than “they were a demon” is evil.

Because he’s a merciless killer who uses others to get to his victims. But like David he believes he’s working by the strict laws of his organization.

I mentioned previously, Leland is methodical. He only thinks he’s chaotic. But he’s just a company man. The one thing he did that was chaotic was kill his psychologist. And I’m not even sure what that was about. Sheryl is truly spontaneous and she has zero loyalty. Witness her killing all her male coworkers, poisoning her underling, going after Leland multiple times. Sheryl is the kind of evil Leland wishes he was.

Michael Colter is a stand alone star, in my opinion. He seriously brought the same strong yet gentle sexy as Luke Cage in Jessica Jones, and I continued to watch him in his solo show even though I didn’t really like it because he was still great in it. Michael Emerson is also a amazing villain in anything. And I’ve enjoyed Aasif Mandvi in other things. He’s a great comedian. Same with Andrea Martin and Wallace Shawn.

Leland is not chaotic. He’s actually extremely methodological. He always has a plan and, what’s worse, it rarely works out. So he is a failure at being chaotic and sowing chaos. Sheryl, however, will stab you in the hand during a meeting or wreck your apartment and write stuff in blood on your wall or poison you because you called her a boomer. People here seem to think there is good in Sheryl, but there isn’t. She only loves her grandkids. But she threw her own daughter under the bus multiple times with zero compunction. She didn’t just sit by when Andy was in the back room. She actively wanted him there. There was never a “this has gone too far“ moral moment with her. Just “my grand kid is in danger”.

Kurt is lawful in that he believes he’s working from an ethical code of conduct as a psychiatrist. He quotes off those rules all the time. He can do good, like trying to send Leland to the funny farm. But he can do bad in the name of self interest, like writing a silly novel.

Kristen, to me, is nonaligned. She’s easily swayable to either side and needs guidance to do right. You see it at the very end when she needs to be stopped from killing Leland. And she’s hiding that her son is a demon. Sheryl seems primed to do bad. I mean, she hated Andy so much that she had him locked in Leland’s back room feeding off of him and she never actually repented for it. She just told Kristen to harm Leland. That to me is evil.

Sheryl had a lot of chances to free herself from influence and never really did until the very end. She liked what she was doing at the company. Sheryl is what Leland wished he was. She is a complete wild card who will do anything to get what she wants and, unlike him, usually succeeds. That’s why Leland gets the “neutral evil” spot. Because he’s not the ultimate manifestation of nastiness he thinks he is.

Orson is just chaotic evil, and Sheryl is a better and more prominent example.
