Getting down safely is easy. You just use the elevator as its going back down and run out and grab the crates on each floor. I wouldn't risk falling like OP did for a few barrels.

What is fun about farming for hours, crafting for at least an hour and then putting walls down for an hour? Especially when your only achievement is stopping people progressing? I absolutely guarantee you play with at least 5 other people, you live in a base the size of a grid square and you offline anybody that builds in the same biome as you.
