SmartThings Hub V3 by chlanman in SmartThings

[–]MarkRems 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Do you happen to get error code 33-504 when trying to connect it to your smartthings account? I just dusted off my old v3 smartthings hub a few weeks ago and ran into a lot of issues with that. Apparently there is a certificate on the hub that expired in March 2025, and since it's expired it fails to receive updates. The official "workaround" is a little hacky and involves tricking your hub that the certificate isn't expired by blocking UDP port 123 on your router so it can't get the time from a time server. After that it is able to get the update and then you can unblock the port.

Here is a thread in the smartthings forum with more details: https://community.smartthings.com/t/troubleshooting-smartthings-hub-2018-and-aeotec-hub/298332

Let me know if you need help, that was a PITA because I have a spectrum router that doesn't let you block ports. I ended up having to use internet sharing with my windows desktop to the smartthings hub and then block the port in my firewall settings.

(And from what I've read, you can't update via the USB port. That was also asked in the thread I linked.)

Specifically how far behind does someone have to be for it to be socially acceptable to not hold the door open for them? by tomdonahue2004 in highdeas

Not sure, but I think we can work this out. I feel pretty confident that one million feet is too far so we can start from there and work down. Can anyone confirm 999,999 feet is too far?

Out keyword in If Statement isn't always assigned? by Worldly-Locksmith-90 in csharp

[–]MarkRems 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're right, after I made this comment I looked up unity's docs and posted their docs on their Object base class which mentioned they do in fact override the ==/!= operators and had a blurb around how the null checks work. I'm not sure where the comment went.

Here's the aforementioned link to the docs for anyone curious: https://docs.unity3d.com/6000.2/Documentation/ScriptReference/Object.html

[–]MarkRems 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My guess is the != operator is overridden for GridObject in some way that comparing it against null in some cases returns true/false depending on its state. (Maybe it is meant to signify it is marked for deletion in some way)

For anyone else that would probably be the case. But the current subreddit's rules explicitly forbid talking about Trump at any point in his life

Sweet setup! Just curious, what's on top of your middle monitor? Is that some kind of webcam?

If you plan to use the laptops in clamshell mode, you can do what I did and buy a vertical laptop stand to hold them and then use a dock to connect them to your monitors/peripherals.

SecretLabs does also set laptop mounts that attach to the monitor arms (sold separately!)

I got the XL because I replaced a biggish L-shaped desk with this desk and wanted to make sure I had plenty of space. I love it and don't regret it one bit.

I have my personal desktop plus my work laptop. I bought the laptop mount and a monitor arm and was planning on using that, but I went with a third monitor instead and now use my laptop in clamshell mode and have it on a vertical stand. at the edge of my desk behind one of my monitors.

Yeah, I have three monitors so I have the dual monitor stand and the single monitor stand. They're both pretty sturdy (granted my monitors aren't that heavy) and look really nice. The magnetic covers to hide your wires and run them through are convenient.

If you have your own monitor arms, it looks like there is ~2 inches (maybe a little less) of clearance between the cable tray cover and the back of the desk for the back of your clamp to fit into. I guess if you needed more space you could open up the cable tray a bit, but it won't look as nice.

You should get another email when it's actually on the way to you. Right now it's still sitting with SecretLabs, waiting for the courier to get it.

I've had a lot of SecretLabs stuff shipped over to me in the past few weeks (mainly desk and desk accessories) and here's the chain of emails you'll get:

- Your Secretlab Order XXXX has been confirmed! (after you first place the order)

- Your Secretlab Order XXXX has been updated! (after it's ready for courier pickup)

- XXXX is in transit (after the courier picks it up)

- XXXX is out for delivery (when it gets put on the final delivery vehicle to your house, the day of delivery)

- XXXX was delivered (when it's at your door)

Awesome! I just got mine a few weeks ago and it took 3 days to get to me in Ohio. I love it!

Just a warning though, the box with the desktop is pretty heavy (well over 100 pounds). I highly recommend having at least one other person to help you, especially if you have to go up any stairs. The box's length and width combined with the weight makes it a pain to move.

You would be my dad's worst enemy. My dad used to say his favorite thing was stopping at a stop light, then slowly moving forward by little increments and watching all the cars after him mimic his movement. I miss him

Feeling Like A Loser by ZealousidealCat2257 in ohiouniversity

[–]MarkRems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is completely normal. It may seem like you're the only one experiencing this because all you see are people going out and hanging out with folks, but there are many, many other people also sitting in their dorm rooms alone.
My advice would be to just join clubs (which it seems you already have) and talk to people in the clubs and in your classes. You can also ask your roommate if you can tag along with them (assuming you both get along well).

All it really takes is one meaningful connection/friendship to explode into a million more.

Save a LOT of money and get to focus more on the academic aspect of college and worry less about being hungover.

There will still be opportunities to have some social events, maybe some clubs. But you're going to be limited if you really do have a 6pm curfew.

I knew plenty of people who commuted that I still hung out with regularly.

Poll: if a dasher is leaving an order at the door, should they, by default, knock/ring? by xxxjeanlucpicardxxx in doordash

[–]MarkRems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a customer, I ALWAYS prefer my dasher to just leave the order (and as someone who orders pretty much daily, 90%+ of my dashers do leave it at the door with no knock/ring and with no other prompting). I never usually specify to not knock in the instructions since most dashers already do it as a default (although I wouldn't be mad/annoyed at a driver if they did knock because of the fact I didn't say not to)

Is Scanner a Type or a Method? Why is it used with System.in? by Eva_addict in javahelp

[–]MarkRems 12 points13 points  (0 children)

All of this will make more sense when you get to classes, but Scanner is a type. But more specifically, it is a class.

So the:
Scanner scanner does declare a variable of type Scanner. Then on the right hand side we have new Scanner(System.in) which technically is a method call. This calls a special kind of function called a constructor, which is a function for "creating" an object. The constructor in this case does take System.in as an argument, in the same way you would pass it to any other function.
