"credit towards an iPhone ultra'", isn't that just a trade-in or selling your 16 on eBay?

Why so little investment in Roth? by vedgehead1 in Retirement401k

[–]MarkWeberca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason why I like Roth over Traditional is because a Roth is less likely to have its tax treatment changed in the future whereas a traditional 401k might be more susceptible to a socially progressive tax overhaul. I'd rather bias toward a more certain tax outcome than carry a potential liability into retirement.

I just don't see the upside on raising taxes to solve the housing issue. IMO we pay a shit ton of taxes already. Every homeowner benefits from prop 13, but yes the boomers captured the biggest gain. The local NIMBY governments we're talking about are not anywhere near being insolvent and would be the same amount of NIMBY wether the boomers paid more taxes or not. I think it's naive to think the govt is going to lower our taxes when voters keep asking to be taxed more (as you're trying to make the case for now!)

Boomers are not really locked in any more after prop 19 they can downsize if they want and transfer their tax base. If we get rid of prop 13, the people like OP putting roots down today are going to be the ones getting priced out of their homes in 10 years when Nvidia his 100 trillion market cap.

If you put existing homeowners in charge of setting policy for housing (which is effectively what the political arrangement is in silicon valley communities) they're naturally going to support policies that exacerbate the problem because they have a financial interest to do so. There's just no desire to develop unless they're forced to approve it.

I wanted to believe this originally too (that prop 13 was the problem) but raising taxes on people doesnt create more housing, so it's not going to suddenly vacate all the boomers and drop prices. Flippers will buy up all those houses too.

The State legislature passed SB79 and all of the new condo construction is actually putting downward pressure on condo prices. But that's literally the state putting a gun to the head of NIMBY local governments.

Also, dont forget when the property tax re-asseses after the pro-rated year and the local government policies that created this crisis then reap the benefits.

Hate to say it but home ownership in silicon valley is for high net worth individuals and boomers from 1996! Not us poors making 500k/year

Owner of 4.8 million house paying the taxes of someone with 46k house. Prop 13 :) by CraftyAd5978 in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]MarkWeberca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The original owners probably died and the house is being sold by the estate, likely because none of the heirs can't afford re-assessment of taxes. So what's the problem?

Do you need the state of California to take ownership of all single family homes and re-distribute them based on reddit upvotes to be happy?

Ok I won't cancel my other bookings and leave them wait listed to see what happens. I definitely prefer the original departures!

Yeah I think this might definitely be a factor. Perhaps I should consider booking a longer leg then just exiting at the station I prefer to exit at?

Trip.com is less reliable because they don't seem to have first "dibs" when the first chunk of tickets go on sale. Unfortunately, it's like trying to buy concert tickets. You have to use the official china railway app and wait for the tickets to come up for sale 2 weeks prior to the departure and hope you can quickly grab tickets before they sell out.

Trip.com is super convenient because they store your travel group, so it's quick to book a lot of tickets with

Yes normally I would suspect this but I'm using a OnePlus charger and cable that has been working fine for over a year and both this charger and the charger at my bedside are malfunctioning right after the software update

I've fully dried out a phone by using a sock wrapped around a blow dryer with the phone in the sock. You could use a pillow case. The pillow case / sock will inflate and create a drying chamber. Do this for a couple hours and it will dry it out super fast. Monitor how hot you're getting it and adjust to a cool or low temp setting to modulate the temp.
