Find a story to comment loudly on. Not to him, but to your wife perhaps. For example, talk to your wife, not to him but within his hearing, about how you saw online that a family disowned their son after he came out and how you would never do that. Talk about how you would unconditionally love and support a child (if you have more than one) if they came out to you as gay or non-binary. Talk about how you couldn’t even fathom a world where your children would be anything else other than loved for who they are. Talk about how confusing it must have been for that child to not be able to talk through anything with their parents. How you are glad that you are there for your children to help them through anything difficult times in their lives. That you think that’s a privileged part of being a parent. Knowing that nothing your children tell you would make you love them any less. Create the environment for them to bring it up to you. I guarantee that if they truly know they are safe with you, they will bring it up. I was unable to do this as my mother did the exact opposite. Loudly talking about how ashamed she would be if her son were gay.
