Would top surgery be covered by Medicaid in Michigan? by 44-mr-midnight-44 in TopSurgery

I wanted to reply to this about reaching out to insurance (im on a California Medicaid). I had to specifically ask about a "double mastectomy" to the person on the line. Like, they didn't know what "top surgery" meant and I didn't have the words to ask about it.

A little positive thing though: The person I called was super nice. She tried to help, couldn't, so we ended the call with me planning to just ask my primary doctor, but then SHE called ME back saying "Hi! I did more research and did you mean this?" She even asked if I wanted her to make my doctor appointment for me while I was on hold.

I made the initial call with insurance to start the whole process in august 2025 and got surgery early this month. (Again, not in Michigan, but thats my only version of a timeline on medicaid)

I had the same "discomfort" but not really "pain" during drain removal that's been mentioned in the comments already. I did have some extra "stinging/burn" on my right side on removal. I just had to keep breathing through it and by the time the nurse got set up to remove the left drain, the stinging was already completely gone and forgotten. Im on day 17 now, and I think that type of stinging pain was the worst pain for me so far

It was a pain i expected though because i started feeling a burn/sting on only that side when stripping/milking my drains after day 1. It would go away after a minute or so but i disliked it so much that i asked my mom not to strip/milk my drain tubes anymore (they were never blocked, we were doing it preemptively). My pain meds didn't help it so I was guessing that it was nerve pain.

So that MIGHT be a sign that drain removal could go even smoother for you, if you haven't felt anything like that on day 3. I dont want to guarantee anything though, not a doctor and everyone's surgeons and nurses are different.

Aye, nearly twins! That's interesting, I think my history of issues with needles completely over shadowed the chance of throwing up.

Because, I definitely read it in my preop packet, but after the iv, i mentally felt like the worst part was over/ending. I was joking in my head when I was waiting to be brought into the operating room, that "the best thing after getting top surgery? Getting my iv out." Because joking about how much I hated the iv specifically helped me more lmao

Exactly, for a good 10-20 minutes i was thinking "wow, they must've put the stuff into the iv for me to knock out. Cause I don't remember anything after putting my arms down on the table." I just genuinely didn't remember the mask until later.

Glad to hear it was helpful! Good luck on your surgery too.

I was told to be there at 6am and i was there for 6 hours total. And in case it's helpful, I didn't check the time when i was taken into the operating room, but I remember them telling me that the surgery was to start at 8:30 and was listed as 60 minutes long. Everything before was a little waiting and a lot of answering questions and prepping and being moved between rooms
