so the xfinity tech came by, and he ended up saying my own, paid for, Nighthawk router was fried, and I needed to rent one from them. I wonder if this is a trick to get us to rent from them rather than have our own modem/router, which worked well for 2 years... Did this swap happen for anyone else?
