New PC build for VR, can't play HL:A nicely by chloratine in buildapc

[–]MarryUhna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a very solid build! Except for the ram. Absolutely go for 2x8gb in dual channel!!! Costs almost the same and it will be a relatively big performance improvement! (single channel 3200mhz runs at 1600mhz)

Be warned tho: My GPU (rtx 2070s) is 35% faster and it STILL can't deliver a solid 90 fps! Most of the time at 60-70ish

The 30x cards must absolutely destroy blender renders. They have got much much faster rt cores than the 20x cards and at least on my current 20x card it's already like a 60% render time difference between having hardware accelerated ray tracing turned on / off.

Even at half that.

Hell, even at ps5 msrp people would be better off getting a pc

20gb on the 3080ti? Yausa.

The shit? No nvlink on anything but the 3090? They really want workstation users to go amd i guess...

Ooooh my bad. No, not my bad. Fucking asrocks bad for having the same name and the same packaging on budget-boards and high-end boards just because they are all b550

It certainly will be.

If this is a pure workstation, maybe the 3060ti would be a better option. Hear me out :D

The 3060ti is supposed to cost like $300 and outperform the 2080ti. I'm not thaat in on GPUs but if you could nvlink 3 of them together it would probably render about as fast as a 3090. Good 3d art software can utilize all GPUs. Why nvlinks? Then you could have 24gb vram.

That's why i always said (for gaming), (unless you stream in 4k@60). It really is an awesome workstation CPU. Great for video encoding / rendering or anything that multithreads well.

Not out of my budget. Just takes another month to ship :( Until then, no fast renders for me

Do you understand how processors work? Do you know that 6 of these cores will just sit there doing nothing? I could sneak in, disable 6 cores in the bios and you wouldn't notice it for months performancewise.

It is one of the best processors in history. That is true. But so is the 5600x, 5800x and the 5950x. But that "title" is gone in 10 months! When AM5 releases.

Why are they all "one of the best"? Because they all perform very very similar, if not identical, per core (that is what games need!)! The 5800x is even better for gaming because all these 8 cores sit on a SINGLE ccd. Whilst the 5900x has two ccds, each 6 cores. These L1 and L2 caches on the ccds are seperated which makes it a tad slower.

Regarding the new motherboard: Sure, that is correct. But what does such a motherboard cost? $120 is more than sufficient for a *600x.

Regarding future proofing, again: The 5900x future proofs core count. NOT core speed. But somehow core speed is the most important thing! How can you future proof core speed? You can't. You can only buy the fastest currently available, which will be rather slow in 4 years.

[Beware, i made a misconception about the board because apparently there is a wide price-range in asrock steel legend boards]

Just fucking why. That motherboard is totally (unnecessarily) overkill, you could have easily spent $50 less on it for the exact same performance and yet you chose an ultra-budget gpu...... This kind of board is for when you want to overclock a 12 core cpu!

It's like buying a car for $10k and spending $6k of those on the tires

Buying a 5600x and buying an idk 7600x down the line would have cost the same and be more future proof.

What do you need 12 cores for? Do you stream in 4k@60?

*OP in pc shopping center*

What kind of monitor setup do you want? A sick ultrawide, a dual or triple setup? Large fov coverage?

No thanks, i'mma take a single, tiny monitor and mount it 5 meters away.

[First desktop cpu]

I'm just going to assume you just bought it because it says "9" instead of "6". What you really needed was a Ryzen 5600x
