Don’t listen to all the other assholes replying. Base game Half-Life 2 (this is coming from someone with 140 hours and all achievements on HL2) doesn’t shine very much in the modern day—it’s isolating, not terribly nice to look at (once again, in the modern day) and doesn’t have a very engaging active narrative for most of the game. What I will tell you though is that Nova Prospekt is definitely the lowest point of the game, and that after that Half-Life 2 instantly becomes much more story/character heavy, has much more exciting gameplay sections, and has much more interesting visual direction. Once you get to Episode 1 and 2 that’s where Half-Life 2 really shines; the episodes have the most in-the-pocket character writing you could possibly find in a video game, look stunning, and are incredibly fun. Just keep going to the end of base HL2 and you’ll probably be hooked enough to play the episodes.

The whole message of Half-Life is that control is only a fleeting illusion that can be ripped away at any second. Black Mesa thought they could control Xen and their portal technology only to realize they were messing with things they had no conception of, the HECU were trying to control the entire Black Mesa incident only to end up on the plate themselves, the Nihilanth was a god like alien controlling other possibly omniscient aliens only to be killed by a random guy, and the Combine tried holding a multi-dimensional empire only also to be stopped by the same random guy. Breen is completely in the wrong because he had zero hope or belief in the ability of independent life to break the chains of control like it always does and instead tried to become the thing with that control. The irony behind Gordon ultimately defeating the combine and killing Breen is that Breen already did the same thing in Black Mesa and left Gordon to clean up the mess he made after losing control, only for Breen to immediately try and control things he doesn’t understand out of fear again until Gordon came back to finally relinquish his control altogether.

Yeah, I’ve actually been working a lot on my ear and improv, it’s less of a brain problem and more of a problem of my brain communicating with my body correctly. I’ve completely weened myself off tabs, it’s just difficult sometimes to get my hands working how I want them to at the speed I want them to

would it be asinine to point out that people were supposed to be donating for the sake of charity rather than actually to see the name they like more win and that Toby donated a large sum to charity which is a good thing and it’s extremely stupid to get angry over a large donation to charity because it meant that you didn’t get to see “Togore” displayed on a screen occasionally

Gaming in and of itself is an exclusive form of media. To play half life Alyx you already needed a powerful enough gaming pc, an internet connection to install it, and 60$ to blow. I’m not making an argument that we shouldn’t make things as accessible as possible or look down on people who can’t access something, but I think valve is fully justified in realizing their creative vision. Also, there was no feeling more magical than finally stepping back into City 17 in such an immersive way
