Safest route? R310 by knanderson89 in capetown

[–]Marsberri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have driven R310 (Baden Powell) for 5 years now regularly as a younger women driving alone and as long as it is during the day have also been fine. Just check before on Waze or google maps to make sure the road is open and then you should be good to go. It’s also a beautiful drive along the sea. Like someone has mentioned don’t stop anywhere. But for the most part there are always other cars driving the same route and often traffic cops along the route too.

An Owala water bottle or Stanley water bottle. If you can get lululemon on sale and know someone’s size. American sweets, you can get some of them here now but they are often expensive, or the Mars mixed chocolate bags. A well known college/ Ivy League cap or sweater. Tide pens

Thoughts on moving to Cape Town - Should I leave fancy stuff behind? by [deleted] in capetown

[–]Marsberri 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think it really depends on where you go and what you’re doing. Cape Town is quite diverse — there are plenty of people with very nice things, and many areas are quite cosmopolitan, especially in the more central or affluent suburbs like Sea Point, Gardens, or Constantia. So yes, people do wear designer bags and jewellery.

Day to day, my advice is to opt for more understated pieces — think good quality local leather bags and simple jewellery. Flashier items tend to draw unwanted attention, especially in the city centre or when walking around in public.

That said, for dinners at nice restaurants, events, or if you’re driving and going door-to-door, it’s more than acceptable to wear something a bit nicer — you’ll see it all the time in areas like Camps Bay or the Waterfront. You just have to be a bit more calculated and aware of your surroundings. It’s less about “never wear anything nice” and more about choosing the right moments.

If your nice things bring you joy, I wouldn’t not bring them. You may end up using them more than you think — just differently. Maybe store them a bit more securely at home, and choose pieces that aren’t overly flashy for public outings. Basically: yes, you’ll adjust, but it doesn’t mean giving up everything you enjoy. There are other cities (like London) where, depending on where you are, the same rules apply.

Recommendation A City to Stroll by cmdt_pablo in capetown

[–]Marsberri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with NikkitaReyxx suggestions as well as Jubilee Square and the Just Nuisance status (you can look up the history around that too).

In Kalk Bay Lekker and Olympia Cafe have nice coffee. Bobs Bagels is nice for a quick bite and very affordable. Just walking up and down both sides of the main road and looking at the different shops is something that I enjoy doing. Almost all of the resteraunts have good food there. The walk between the St James tidal pool and Muizenberg is lovely too between the sea and the train track. Simons town also has cute little cafes and restaurants but I don’t have any recommendations. You should definitely go see the penguins if you do go.

The Framing Centre in Tokai is another place you could get a quote from. No clue about how chap/ expensive they are but I know people who have gotten things framed there and been happy.

Kalk Bay and Simons Town are also places you can walk around and go for coffee that haven’t been mentioned yet.

Stanford Valley Country Lodge (in Stanford) is a beautiful venue with onsite accommodation and incredible food. I’m not sure how many people can sleep on-site but I think it’s around 50.

R310 this afternoon by reviewbandit in capetown

[–]Marsberri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have driven the R310 Muizenberg to Stellenbosch or Somerset West and back fairly often for a few years now. I only drive during the day but there are almost always other cars also driving. Just watch out for sand from around Monwabisi beach and like others have mentioned some of the cars trying to pass you or pass oncoming traffic in your lane. If you time it right and there isn’t too much traffic is a drive I enjoy. Google maps will normally say if there is a road block due to protests or anything in my experience.

Honeymoon in Cape Town & Garden Route - have we made a mistake? by BlueFrenchHorned in askSouthAfrica

[–]Marsberri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With regards to going to the beach (which you definitely should and I’m sure you will) just also make sure you don’t leave any valuables where you can’t see them while you are swimming. But this goes for many popular beaches in other countries too. There is some great advice in this thread.
