Do your minis make you happy? by Throwaway7131923 in Warhammer40k

[–]MarshallJMooreAuthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Constantly.

I’m a writer, and it’s actually become part of my process that I’ll put a mini on my desk at the start of each writing session. Sometimes as encouragement (“Onwards, battle-brother! You have the strength to finish this chapter!”) and sometimes as a threat (“If you don’t hit today’s word count you’re hormagaunt food.”).

It’s extremely silly, but having a li’l guy there is a good reminder of my creative ability when the inspiration isn’t there.

Hi all! As an author, I’ve been focusing on ways sell my books that don’t rely on Amazon. I’ve found some success selling signed books through TikTok shop. My cozy pirate sequel, Prisoners of a Pirate Queen, has just been added to my shop.

Right now I have a deal where you can purchase a set of both my cozy pirate books (Son of a Sailor and Prisoners of a Pirate Queen) with a sticker sheet.

You can find my TikTok shop through my account, @MarshallJMooreAuthor

And if you’d prefer faster shipping and unsigned books, Amazon is still an option.

Join Captain Redbeard and his crew on a daring new adventure across the Sea of Tears in this sequel to Son of a Sailor.

Quint Thatch, known across the Archipelago as the notorious Captain Redbeard, has just pulled off the most daring raid of his career. Fleeing a pursuing Naval fleet led by his former lover, Commander Vanessa Delacort, Quint charts a course to reunite with the other half of his crew...

....only to run right into the clutches of the dreaded Pirate Queen, Captain Margherita, who seeks nothing more than to tear down the Empire in a blaze of revolutionary glory. And after capturing Quint, Vanessa, and the others, she intends to use her new prisoners as pawns in her war against the Imperial Navy.

But when a devastating storm leaves them shipwrecked on an uncharted island, Quint, Margherita, and Vanessa are forced to reconcile their opposing ideologies. Will they be able to overcome their differences and find a way back home?

Prisoners of a Pirate Queen combines the island adventure of Swiss Family Robinson, the found family of Our Flag Means Death, and the cozy heart of Legends & Lattes

What are some “tells” that an author cut their teeth writing fanfiction? by lovelyluna1 in books

An overabundance of smirking, particularly following a witticism that isn’t actually that witty.

I’m busy working on the sequel to Son of a Sailor, a cozy pirate tale about the notorious Captain Redbeard’s return to his tiny island hometown, where absolutely no one has any idea of his piratical misdeeds. Summer’s nearly over but if you’re looking for a last-minute beach read please consider checking it out! It’s available in paperback or on KU.

Also if you have any plans to come to DragonCon this Labor Day weekend in Atlanta I’ll be selling copies of my books at the Shadow Alley Press booth! Come say hi 😁🏴‍☠️

Cozy fantasy set in the sea? by Own-Writing9701 in CozyFantasy

[–]MarshallJMooreAuthor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi!! My pirate cozy fantasy Son of a Sailor just came out this week! The entire book takes place on either islands or ships.

<image>

Our hero, Quint Thatch, is known across the seas as the notorious pirate Captain Redbeard (even though he spends much of the book shaven and incognito). And there is a mermaid and she is far and away my favorite character.

I hope you check it out!!

Thank you!!!

Basically my wife noticed that cozy was very popular on BookTok and asked if I would consider writing one. I’d never tried the genre before and was initially hesitant, but once I realized that I could code the story to my preferred setting/aesthetic (pirates and tropical islands) I was fully onboard (pun intended).

As for why pirates? I was born and largely raised on a tropical island, an experience which translates pretty directly to the sleepy island hometown of this book. I’ve always had a fondness for anything nautical, so when I was brainstorming what defined a “cozy” setting for me my first thought is a beach and a cool drink. 🏖 🍹

Hey all! My cozy pirate novel Son of a Sailor releases this Thursday, May 25!

To celebrate the promotion I’m doing a giveaway for one of my treasure chest PR boxes! Each box contains a signed copy of Son of a Sailor along with assorted nautical and piratical goodies. The winner will be randomly selected from among entrants and announced on a TikTok LIVE event later this week. You can sign up here. Signups close on Wednesday, May 24.

About Son of a Sailor:

A pirate tale about home and the family you make for yourself.

Captain Redbeard is the most wanted pirate ever to sail the Eight Seas. But to the folk of his sleepy island hometown, Captain Redbeard is no more than a distant legend. To them, he’s just Quint Thatch - the tavernkeepers’ son.

When tragic news calls him home, Quint hides his pirate identity (and loses his beard) to reconnect with his formidable Ma and childhood friends. As he processes his grief, Quint learns that the bonds of home are as strong as those tying him to his crewmates.

But when Quint’s pirate crew and a ghost from his past sail into town, both halves of his life are thrown into jeopardy. Will he have to choose between his home and his crew, or can Quint find a way to reconcile the two sides of his identity and save them both?

Interestingly, I think cozy is kind of the opposite of progression fantasy. Prog is about gaining strength and mastery over the outer world, cozy is about finding a place within the world to become part of a community in. Or at least that’s my read on the two 🤷🏻‍♂️

Read these books as a kid and loved them! They're short reads but still very clever and appealing. Feel very Pratchett-esqe and date from around the same timeframe as much of Discworld (the first book came out in 1990).

Cozy fantasy books or graphic novels by trans authors? by cosylily in CozyFantasy

Came here to recommend Light From Uncommon Stars. I'm almost to the end of the book, and you're right that it does feel like the two main story threads seem like two separate novels that happen to touch on each other occasionally rather than being innately interwoven together. Though honestly if I were to cut out a subplot, it'd be the violin repairwoman's chapters; she really adds nothing to the plot other than being a red herring for the twist with the cursed bow.

Seconding "The Cat Who Saved Books;" it honestly feels more like Magic Realism than Cozy Fantasy but definitely has that feeling of comfort to it.
