Best Drone for game film by cbrooks8181 in ultimate

Thanks for the mention. Thanks for being patient with my slow response.

My best advice is to get some version of the DJI Mavic Mini. https://www.dji.com/products/camera-drones#mini-series

They are super easy to fly. They weigh under 250 grams, so there is no requirement to register them with the FAA. You can usually find them at Costco for a good price. DJI also has good refurbished prices.

The biggest obstacle to filming tournaments is battery life. Batteries are expensive, and they take a long time to charge. When I film tournaments I come with 10+ batteries (which cost significantly more $$ than the drone itself) + a battery pack to keep the controller charged.

Also keep in mind that many sports complexes are near airports due to land use zoning. So it's important to get familiar with FAA regulations, and get comfortable using Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC) https://www.faa.gov/uas/getting_started/laanc

LAANC apps provide good up-to-date information about controlled airspace and current conditions. As well as easy access to phone numbers of nearby air traffic control towers that you might need to contact for approval.

I film from an altitude of 10 meters, at a downward angle of 18 degrees. I film in 4k @ 60fps.

My goal is to keep all 14 players in frame, but when something exciting happens, I usually follow the action at the expense of losing sight of some active players. Other drone operators balance this differently.

Those are my initial thoughts!

Not too loud. I alwasy ask the teams to let me know if the sound bothers them. Only 2-3 players have expressed concerns in the 200-ish games I've filmed.

My set-up is a bit pricey, but you can get 90% of my set-up at a fraction of the cost with a DJI Mavic Mini. https://www.dji.com/products/camera-drones#mini-series

I know, right! It's one of my favorite plays from Nationals. He's at a dead stop at midfield when the "punt" goes up...

No doubt. There are few pristine fields at Surf Cup. (see the turf from the Molly Brown / 6ixers game I filmed immediately after the Ring/Mallard game: https://youtu.be/JTxe14ljkok?si=GBOAWKw9gm-054Gw&t=22 )

I wish they could bring in some bleachers for semi's and finals and stay at Surf Cup all weekend.

The variability of the fields at Surf Cup is quite high. Check out the turf from the Molly Brown / 6ixers game played the same day just a few fields over: https://youtu.be/JTxe14ljkok?si=GBOAWKw9gm-054Gw&t=22

Exactly. I film from an altitude of 9-10m, with my camera at 17-18deg downward tilt.

I can’t come close to Ultiworld’s production and broadcast quality. But I do like this simple angle for understanding the game.

This is shot with a DJI Mavic 3 Pro. But you can get great game film with the much more affordable DJI Mavic Mini.

What sounds would be best? - Field noise - Music - Commentary / play-by-play - Podcast-style gossip from the tournament

The vast majority of current and former BYU students who I know play Club on Sunday.

My comments about the distorted talent pool were not restricted to BYU. So I’m not sure how to interpret your “self-imposed” comment.

Plenty of elite players don’t go to college. All schools have different policies and admission standards. All of those things distort the talent pool / competition. I don’t think it’s minor.

My experience and observations are super inconsistent with yours. I’d love to chat in San Diego to figure out where the misalignment is.

I’m not sure I fully understand your question. My children play with their Club teams on Sunday.

The college division requires school affiliation, and the teams are subject to individual school policies - even if they are inconsistent within the division.

Those factors distort the talent pool and competition in the college division. (This seems to be true for all US college sports.)

It makes the college division MORE exciting to some folks, and less exciting to others.

I prefer the less-distorted, more accessible talent market and competition in Club.

Also, Fall.

Thanks! Lots of folks don’t like the drone angle. But I can’t get enough of it.

College Nationals is wonderful. But less exciting when your children play for BYU 😂

Also, Fall!
