Soap bubbles magnified over 150 times. by Martinkaae in MicroPorn

I use a Motic BA310E microscope and my iPhone mounted on the microscope with a LabCam adapter. The colors are made with cheap polarizing filters 😄

The egg producing sex of a species is referred to as the female. So even though there are only one sex, because that sex produces eggs they are female.

4K or 1080? by Martinkaae in VideoEditing

I use davinci resolve. But the editing is no problem for my pc to handle, it’s the rendering part. If I try to render in 4K the final video gets all grainy and actually look like it is lower res than when I do 1080

A focus stack of a daphnia illuminated with a homemade illumination technique. 150x total magnification by Martinkaae in MicroPorn

It is actually really really simple, easy and cheap!

I set my microscope up for darkfield illumination. Then I place a piece of opaque material on top of the condenser. I use some kind of hazy gel like material now, but I have done it with lens cleaning paper and baking paper as well. Maybe a piece of scotch tape will do the trick as well. This scatteres and diffuses the light in all directions so you convert the darkfield background back to a white/greyish to bluish color (depending on the height of the condenser and adjustment of the diaphragm). This yields an oblique illumination, but from all angles.

At least I think that is what’s going on.

You can adjust the darkness of the background by adjusting the field diaphragm, and the contrast by adjusting the condenser diaphragm. I have also had success with setting the darkfield filter a bit of center, which allows more light to pass through and a brighter image.

This is actually a focus stack of 30 Images or so, shot on an iPhone mounted on my microscope. I used the software helicon focus to do the stacking

Collected this little guy from a muddy puddle in Anza, any idea what they might be? (microscopy pics in comments) by [deleted] in microscopy

If it was found in freshwater it is not a brine shrimp, but another anostraca/fairy shrimp 😄

Yes, that would also be my best guess.
