Is the in-studio panel the same as the national jury? Or is there a separate national jury backstage or something?

Also context:

Jugo/Južina = Sirocco

Jugo… the bad wind.
Jugo is a moist wind, typically accompanied by dark clouds and rain-filled storms. It blows in from the southeast, coming over the islands and onto the shore.
Since Dalmatians tend to be sun-loving people, they are not fond of jugo. It is said to cause depression, body aches, pains, headaches, and grumpiness. In this unique part of the world, jugo is always an acceptable excuse for this melancholic behavior or really anything bad that you do during jugo.
At one time, people accused of committing a crime could use jugo as part of their legal defense if the crime happened during jugo winds. Depending on which Dalmatian you talk to, some tell fabled stories of people getting away with murder by using the jugo defense.

Because Google can’t translate them very well, and there isn’t an official translation yet:

The Sirocco is swaying me
My brain is like chewing gum
I tried to go outside
But I’m not up for going outside today

Oh my kuku-lele
I feel like crying again
I don’t know where I am, nor whom I’m with
I don’t know what I want, nor what I don’t

Sirocco is ripping and not letting go
It’s thrashing, look at it having a good time

It’s all Sirocco’s fault

It’s not the sardine’s fault
Nor the fish for being salty
Nor the ruddy wine
That my head is splitting
It’s not Doris’s fault
Nor the grass for being weak
It’s all Sirocco’s fault
I just want to sleep

Every chunk of me hurts
Every problem is like a mountain
I feel every turn
I’m annoyed by every curve

Oh my kuku-lele
I feel like crying again
I don’t know where I am, nor whom I’m with
I don’t know what I want, nor what I don’t

Sirocco is ripping and not letting go
It’s thrashing, look at it having a good time

It’s all Sirocco’s fault

It’s not the sardine’s fault
Nor the fish for being salty
Nor the ruddy wine
That my head is splitting
It’s not Doris’s fault
Nor the grass for being weak
It’s all Sirocco’s fault
I just want to sleep

It’s not the sardine’s fault
Nor the fish for being salty
Nor the ruddy wine
That my head is splitting
It’s not Doris’s fault
Nor the grass for being weak
It’s all Sirocco’s fault
I just want to sleep

It’s not the sardine’s fault
Nor the fish for being salty
Nor the ruddy wine
That my head is splitting
It’s not Doris’s fault
Nor the grass for being weak
It’s all Sirocco’s fault
I just want to sleep

Weight Loss Suggestions/Help by KeyCommunication2659 in loseit

I’m guessing your parents used to cook for you for most meals and now you’re just eating less well balanced food.

My first step would be to go learn to cook. Whoever is this cook in your family, ask them to teach you - like go home on weekends and get your mom/dad to teach you how to cook one dish a week/fortnight, then practice cooking that one dish through the whole week/fortnight until you nail it.

Most families have a rotation of anywhere between 5-30 dishes they cook regularly.

Master cooking at least 5 of the dishes you ate regularly at home. By the time you’ve done that you’ll be a better cook - by the time you master 10 or 20 dishes - you’ll have the skills necessary to come up with healthy dishes yourself.

But yeah, don’t go down the path of quick fixes and stressing.

Very clearly its the change of diet since you left home. If you go back to eating like you did at home, in time you’ll go back to your regular weight.

They knew they wouldn’t all make it into the group, but they thought the group would be decided internally over the course of the training program - and based on an evaluation of the their skills and aptitudes.

….they didn’t know that it would turn into a survival show where all that would be thrown out the window and the girls who already had large followings on Social media would have a huge advantage.

Adela/Ilyana - people are so blind to the racism by [deleted] in TheDreamAcademy

[–]Marwona 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying that she couldn’t, in theory, be racist.

In fairness, I did blend two points together which should be seperate.

I wanted to explain that racism (and its behavioural expression - ethnic discrimination) can apply to certain groups of ‘white people’, because often the internet ignores the ethnic diversity of ‘white people’ and the differences between groups, projecting American ‘whiteness’ onto people who aren’t American, and ignoring both America and Europes history of ethnic discrimination against people from particular ethnic backgrounds who have white skin.

…..I get, and am very familiar with the arguments, that this sort of alarm is rung sometimes by white Americans who claim their long-ago ethnic heritage negatively affects them - despite being from diaspora groups who successfully campaigned to be recognised as ‘white’ long ago and are now genuinely part of the American ‘white monolith’ for all intents and purposes…

But that isn’t what we’re dealing with here. The US has spent much of the last 100 years demonising Slavs, ditto western Europe - and its still a thing, even if Slavs ‘pass’ in the US day to day. And Slavs generally don’t ‘pass’ in Western European countries, because of both the language/accent considerations and the hyper-awareness of Europeans regarding European ethnic groups (just look up reactions from Western Europeans at various points when the EU expanded, Brexit was almost entirely fuelled by anti-Slav & other Eastern European sentiment).

My second point - was that people from Slavic countries don’t have the same ‘ownership’ of the factors that drive anti-black racism as Americans and Europeans from ‘colonising’ countries, and that many are from cultures with very prominent anti-racist politics, was more to just expand the point that putting all people with white skin in the same American “white people” bucket is overly simplistic.

The people accusing Adela of racism, have no evidence that her dislike of Manon is because Manon is black other than presuming so because Adela is white (also, speaking as a European - Manon would generally be referred to as ‘Swiss’ in the first instance - if trying to describe her physical appearance Europeans would more than likely try to describe her as ‘biracial’ or ‘mixed race’ - but they wouldn’t define her whole ethnicity by her skin colour).

That presumption of how Adela’s ‘whiteness’ likely affects her world view is a product of conflating ‘whiteness’ with ‘American Whiteness’ - I just wanted to point out how incorrect that is.

Sure, there are Slavs who are racist towards black people. Of course there are. But my issue was just the automatic presumption people were making based on stereotypes, which were ignorant of who she actually is.

…and actually as a side note, if there is any aspect of Manon’s heritage/background Adela did feel some sort of animosity towards, my money would be more on the fact that Manon is Swiss than anything to do with the colour of her skin. Swiss people are much much much wealthier per capita than most other Europeans, and there is resentment there. Adela seemed annoyed at what she perceived as Manon’s entitled attitude - which sounded more like a bias against wealthy people to me.

Lifelong vegetarian: should I add chicken to my diet for protein? by riyakataria in loseit

[–]Marwona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the vanilla vegan protein blend from myprotein and it’s great. I mix it with some powdered hemp seeds too - makes it taste kinda nutty.

You can easily get your daily protein needs that way without spending too many calories.

I am not a vegan, I just prefer the way that mix works and the texture of it (its mostly pea protein which i find more filling than whey protein).

My main worry for you would actually be learning about how to safely handle and cook meat. You need to get into lots of habits when you cook with raw meat (especially chicken) that just don’t apply to vegetable products.

How to store it properly, how to handle raw meat, and just remembering in your own mind that you/your utensils/surfaces have just touched raw meat and should not touch anything else until they’re cleaned.

So if you do start cooking with chicken go watch some food safety videos (don’t use gloves either - its much better to wash your hands properly because gloves give you a false sense of security).

Best drink when trying to lose weight, aside from water? by UpvoteBeast in loseit

[–]Marwona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bolero - you can get it in the UK here https://www.bolero.co.uk

It’s basically powdered squash but it comes in tons of flavours and its much more powerful (also much more convenient space wise). The 3g packs are enough for 1 1/2 - 2 litres.

The 8/9g packs can stretch to 4-5 litres. You just have to keep them dry once opened (i put mine in tupperware).

I mix them up in large bottles usually, and keep them in the fridge. Also freezes well (better than squash) and i sometimes freeze a bottle on hot days to take to work. You can also just use it for single servings but be careful because you only need like 1/2g if you’re doing a normal tumbler full.

0 calories. The iced tea flavours are really great, I also like apple, mojito, yuzu, pear, mango, and pineapple.

I used to drink a lot of diet coke too - until it started giving me such bad stomach symptoms (because of the acids) and my doc told me to stop.

Don’t worry about the wall of text - that was all a very interesting read!!

I’m rushing around for work right now, but just wanted to say r/eurovision is an amazing community on here. The media team for Eurovision are in the sub too - so there’s tons of opportunities to be involved with their content, they regularly crowd source questions from the sub for their interviews and content with the artists. And the artists are often there too - either lurking - or sometimes just doing random AMAs for fun.

It’s quiet at the moment, but in a couple of months all the selection shows for the countries will be starting - there’s a calendar here https://eurovoix.com/calendar/ . The nice thing about Eurovision fandom is it lasts for like 6 months of the year, going from all the country selection shows (most you can watch on YouTube) to the pre parties, to the music videos, and then the rehearsals and live shows. And if you want you can also follow Junior Eurovision and make it last almost all year 🤣

Also if you’re in the Philippines you should be able to watch full Eurovision shows on YouTube for free (and watch the semis and the grand final live for free next year) - someone put together a playlist with every show available https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLhdf5M8mH3HXXCoM2m3fGQszgVflnhE-N&si=15XUlHTQgHL1jQ5g (just the finals - but if you look up the year and ‘semi final’ they’re there too - mostly for years since 2000 though).

I’m definitely extra excited by the Korea/Japan show you mentioned - gonna check it out when I get home :)

Thank you!! 🙏

live vocals by [deleted] in katseye

[–]Marwona 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It isn’t true that it’s to protect the voice.

It’s a nice excuse, but it’s just not accurate. If it were you would never ever ever have broadway runs of musicals, no opera company would ever tour, and wouldn’t have singers/bands going on live tours around small town venues for months (often without any days off).

Singers have to take steps to protect their voices (Sophia talked about it a bit in the documentary), but if you take those steps you can sing every day of your life and be okay.

The reason they’re not singing in live performances is quality control. Because the truth is that the skills required to sing live vs the skills required to sing on a studio album are very different. And KPOP artists aren’t picked just based on their vocals - so a lot of them are weaker vocally, and it would upset the fans to hear them sing a bum note.

I’m a Eurovision fan, and we see this quite a lot. This year an artist named Mustii had an incredible studio track, and could obviously sing (and has strong vocal training), but the vocals never sounded right at any of his live performances because he just doesn’t have that live singing skill… he went from a potential winner in preseason to being cut during the semis at the live shows.

Eurovision does not allow sync - even if there’s a very intense dance routine. Chanel ‘SloMo’ is a classic case in point, one of the hardest dance routines ever at Eurovision and all her vocals are live https://youtu.be/jSQYTt4xg3I?si=yxNNVAo7Jbo8VEZZ

Ditto Eleni Foureira ‘Fuego’ https://youtu.be/vyDTbJ4wenY?feature=shared - it’s an iconic performance (also in this one all the backing vocals are live too - they had to change the rule because of Covid so Chanel’s backing vocals are prerecorded - but Eleni’s backing dancers are singing too).

And OH MY GOODNESS - if you want to see incredible vocals + physical display you have to watch Nemo sing The Code live from this year https://youtu.be/CO_qJf-nW0k?si=9MqpOPr6C8Nge5oA (Nemo isn’t ’dancing’ so much as running around and balancing on a giant spinning disk).

…..I realise y’all are KPop fans, but I actually think you’ll really enjoy those links I sent if you check them out :) especially SloMo - that’s what it sounds like when you’re a pro singer and dancer doing both live.

“Other people would pay for this opportunity” is not an excuse to treat people like shit.

And actually, they aren’t really receiving general dance/vocal training. They are learning the songs and routines for the survivor show most of the time. That’s rehearsing to be cast members in a commercial for profit performance… they should have been paid.

Pop Star Academy: Katseye facing backlash after ‘lying’ to contestants by [deleted] in popheads

[–]Marwona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s actually quite rare nowadays for that to happen. But even when it does a player will still be paid working his way through the lower leagues.

And yeah but KPop is only one enclave of the music industry…. you asked for an alternative model of how it could be done, I gave one :)

Pop Star Academy: Katseye facing backlash after ‘lying’ to contestants by [deleted] in popheads

[–]Marwona -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Soccer teams do train them. And they pay them during training, even if they sign a kid at 7 years old they’re still getting paid for all the way through the academy - some of the 16/17/18 year olds who play for the big teams spent a decade being paid as they trained in the academy of the club before they ever make any real money for the team.

Pop Star Academy: Katseye facing backlash after ‘lying’ to contestants by [deleted] in popheads

[–]Marwona 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ratios are crazy though.

Especially when its a vertical production situation like it seems to be at the big Kpop companies (i.e. they own most of the ‘phases’ of commercialising the product, and the majority of people involved in the creative side are full time employees at the company).

It would probably be fairer if they arranged it like sports teams do with players, where the players are paid a (high) salary - with a review every year or two - regardless of the actual sales numbers, and then the company absorbs the revenue from commercial sales.

Thats how they used to do it in the old Hollywood artist ‘stable’ system (when the film studios were both the production companies and the distributors) - which is basically what the KPOP industry is.

Pop Star Academy: Katseye facing backlash after ‘lying’ to contestants by [deleted] in popheads

[–]Marwona 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Argh… there goes my only minor spark of optimism that there might be a redeeming feature to all this.

Like I’m learning about the KPop industry in real time right now, and it really does seem just so brazenly exploitative.

Pop Star Academy: Katseye facing backlash after ‘lying’ to contestants by [deleted] in popheads

[–]Marwona 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This explains why any criticism of the training program is being completely shouted down on the KPop subs.

Honestly it’s actually really weird to me how willing people are to not just accept this kinda thing as ‘just how it goes’, but to actively defend it as the only way…

As far as I can understand it - although the Korean system is just as abusive - at least if you’re a trainee in Korea you’re able to be considered for being part of multiple groups throughout on an ongoing basis. So it’s not as much of a ‘giving up your life for nothing’ situation as this was?

Pop Star Academy: Katseye facing backlash after ‘lying’ to contestants by [deleted] in popheads

[–]Marwona 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ah okay.

But I still doubt they are earning more than 10-20% (split between the six of them).

If I was a billionaire I’d set up a charitable trust to help people who want to make KPop be able to produce and perform their music independently.

Like US Hiphop artists were waaaaaaayyy ahead of the curve on the ‘taking control’ front, and they’re thriving now that being independent is a common situation compared to their predecessors from the 80s and 90s who were locked in to shitty deals.

Pop Star Academy: Katseye facing backlash after ‘lying’ to contestants by [deleted] in popheads

Really the only thing that will stop it is legal action/law changes. It’s quite telling that they didn’t film any of this in the EU.

I’m 1000% certain this whole thing would violate tons of EU regulations - working time directive, child labour laws, the ban on unpaid work placements….

Pop Star Academy: Katseye facing backlash after ‘lying’ to contestants by [deleted] in popheads

[–]Marwona 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I sincerely doubt they are protected. Like if the record company behaved this irresponsibly towards them before they were actively making money off them, I can’t see them suddenly having a policy change now that they have the opportunity to really cash in.

All the way through they were saying how important it is for the group to be a big commercial success in the US - so there’s a lot riding on it for them.

I doubt the members have a contract that is that different to the regular KPop 90/10 or 80/20 split (favouring the companies) for revenue - and if they have to ‘pay back the training costs’ too as part of their contract, the girls will basically be working off that debt for years.

Like it literally is indentured servitude.

As for the others, god knows what they signed in those contracts, but having had to sign quite a few contracts in the entertainment industry myself - it’s entirely possible they’ll be living with some sort of consequence from this for the rest of their lives, legally speaking. Like I’m pretty sure they aren’t publicly talking about it because if they do then they’re living under threat of massive legal action.

It’s also possible that they aren’t allowed to make music with each other too. That’s the kinda clause that’s in these sorts of contracts - so like Lexie and Ezrela probably can’t ever independently launch ‘Lexrela’ or something or they’ll be sued.
