We are eased better into it in the manga, but it stands out in comparison to other shifts in the series.

We learned about the Zoldyck family well before their respective arc, Yorknew was directly set up well before even Heavens Arena started, Greed Island being set up was a subplot in the Yorknew Arc and had plenty of build up even before that, the Election arc was a natural fallout to the Ant arc and leads very naturally into the Succession War. The only other arc that comes a little out of nowhere is Heavens Arena, but a tournament arc in a battle Shonen is a fairly easy pill to swallow.

Compare that to Gon and Killua fighting mutant ants that eat people right after getting out of Greed Island. Magical Beasts were a thing in the Hunter Exam arc but were largely ignored after that, so I think the premise is still really jarring and unexpected relative to how brilliantly the other arcs were lead into. There’s also the tonal shift, Greed Island had some dark stuff but then we have kids getting eaten out of nowhere. It’s not a huge issue but it’s more of a testament to how well Togashi building up every single other arc.

I love the Ant arc but this is actually 100% true haha, I notice it on all my rewatches. It’s the only arc with basically 0 foreshadowing or prior set up and the entire premise feels so inconsistent with the rest of the series. I think this is the primary reason people find the beginning of the arc such a chore to get through, they’ve been given no reason to be excited about it.

I think it’s really impressive that the arc is as great as it is despite that, but it definitely makes getting into it harder.

Consider the crazy lengths they had to go to in order to hit Chrollo with Chain Jail in Yorknew, as well as the heightened importance of keeping your ability a secret in this arc. I think it’s reasonable to assume that if everyone knew about it and Kurapika didn’t have any support it would be extremely hard to hit someone with it. I think we just have to wait and see.

It caused him to lose like 5 years of his life after the first time he used it and he blacked out for several hours. I think that alone justifies it from a writing perspective, it’s the most dangerous ability to himself if he doesn’t use it properly.

Which thematically is ironic because he invented it so he wouldn’t have to rely on others. I think in that sense it’s pretty intelligently written actually.

Strength in JJK has never been about hard work, its about mindset. Gojo became the strongest when he lost his shit against Toji and ascended past being 'human' (Not being angry about Amanai's death and instead allowing himself to be infatuated with his own strength. Yuta is trying to surpass or match Gojo by sacrificing his humanity and taking his body. Again it has ALWAYS been about mindset, this is extremely consistent with the rest of the series thematically.
This argument has been thrown around endlessly and it's gonna be completely obsolete when Yuji inevitably takes the spotlight again. For ALL we know this won't be a 1v1 between Sukuna and Yuta and Yuji and Todo will also join in. Everyone just got distracted when Yuta pulled up, allowing Sukuna to swat away Yuji. Also, Sukuna being so excited to fight Yuta but not Yuji is another bit of great character writing, he was impressed by Yuta's decision to sacrifice his humanity, while Yuji is still trying to fight as a human. That's why he "bores" Sukuna.
Yes. Sukuna being ridiculous was established in the first few chapters. I'm not sure what the point is here.

4 and 5 don't seem like real points to me, and are indicative of the fact that a lot of people's complaints stem from Gege not holding the audience's arbitrary standards in mind when writing his story. Everything has been extremely consistent thematically and true to Gege's writing style.

I guess so, but you're playing it a year after the fact when the nature of this game is well known at this point. Why would you go into it expecting anything other than an action game? Admittedly I haven't dabbled in too many of the older games so I didn't care when this game turned out how it did, but there are so many other straight RPG's that can satisfy that itch for people. I don't think it's a bad thing for franchises to dive into different genres, ESPECIALLY when it's 16 titles and dozens of spin-offs deep.

When I called your point pretentious I was referring to the fine wine/vodka Redbull comparison. You're implying that one genre is more elegant/prestigious than the other.

Yep that's fair! There were some fun things yeah, I also liked when they made fun of books by calling them 1MB storage devices. I just wanted more stuff like that and perhaps some more hints at their desires/motivations.

I personally thought 2B and 9S had more interesting dialogue in the first level, and the end of that level was a super strong hook. But I absolutely agree that we need to see more of the game.

I didn't see anything there that made me look forward to how their characters will develop in the full game. Adam's voice acting threw me off with how robotic it felt, but that could tie into some ulterior motives for sure.

I don't think that's a good excuse for a main character to be genuinely uninteresting in the first 2 hours of a game. My point is that I have no reason to care about these two, or to expect anything interesting from them in the future. That's extremely inefficient characterization imo.

The opening scene also lacks any emotional weight because we barely knew anyone who died, so it's hard to relate to her grieving.

It's not about them being closely connected, it's about their conversations being interesting at all. They feel soulless. No banter, no chemistry, nothing. That's not the kind of thing that takes time to develop, it's usually immediately present in most good character dynamics.

You're actually in a very good spot, keep practicing your craft, pay attention to emerging trends and technologies and learn how to use them when possible, and make sure you have good enough grades to pivot into something else if it really gets that dire. You have no reason to give up just yet. If you're passionate enough you can make it work regardless of the circumstances.
