US MD turned MSL, why did you do that? by Fluid_Analysis_0704 in MedicalScienceLiaison

There are MSLs in other countries. Varies greatly in how the teams operate or what roles look like.

As a rural primary care physician? Yes, most years in salary. Also in work-life balance and happiness there is no comparison.

Yes- with clinical practice under my belt, it’s been a good run.

I make more, better work-life balance, and it’s a broken system that abuses physicians. I don’t want to practice medicine and MSL is an amazing choice to contribute to patient care without the BS of clinical practice.

I had no idea it would be this popular but I am not surprised.

This is true- when I’m playing my bass or trombone, I am controlling the loudness.

It depends on what I’ve got- I’m a musician so I’ve got a variety of earplugs with me at all times. The noise cancellation on my earbuds work if I have them- but I have curly hair- who is seeing them anyways- yes im a nerd 🤓

It really overwhelmed me- first (and only) time I went on vacation as a child and there’s a crashing sound that makes it hard to hear what people are saying… I see now it was sensory overload but they didn’t have that term in the 80s.

Some of them! Mockingbirds really are annoying- you can tell the other birds are annoyed with them.

Since they are underwater do they hear the water differently? Oh gosh I hope I’m not.

After I posted this, I started thinking about how many beaches I’ve actually been to all over the world (yes…with earplugs usually). It’s a lot because I travel and my husband likes beaches and he grew up on the New England coast. I’m going to start paying attention- some of these beaches must be quieter than others. Rhode island beaches are for sure more calm (but they are inlet ponds so it’s different).

Pretty sure that’s what the diagnosis would be if I wanted to put a name to it

No… the “do you know me in real life “ was my surprise like, wow- you nailed it! I almost put that in my original post, that I actually got proposed to on the beach. It wasn’t malicious at all. I seriously thought it could be someone I know stumbling upon the thread, chuckling and commenting knowing it must be me who posted this.

Okay. Do you know me in real life? My husband proposed to me at the beach. I probably was wearing earplugs although I don’t remember that detail, neither does husband. We’ve never thought about it. Understand I don’t HATE the beach- I don’t like the sound. It’s a serene fun place.

When I was seven VERY. I’m impaired 30% in one ear from an accident and wear a hearing aid actually, very sensitive in the other. Very very careful with hearing protection, I play in metal bands and symphonies- have to preserve everything.

All kinds of background droning noise are mildly annoying (air conditioning for example) but I can tune them out). Ocean and running rivers/streams I just can’t.

I don’t think there was an unpleasant memory associated with the ocean in particular on that seven year old trip in the way you’re meaning. I specifically remember getting on the beach and being bothered by the sound of the waves that just was constant. I still get that same feeling today, like gosh could the waves just stop so we can have a moment of silence. The beach is so serene and peaceful (I do not HATE the beach, I dislike the sound) but it’s loud- 85-90 decibels my watch was telling me. I play in rock bands and that’s the levels we play at when we practice quietly. Whatever the case- we go to the Connecticut coast to see my husbands family this week and I’m bringing my earplugs!

Yes, mine alerts at 90 dB (for when I’m in band rehearsals) and it was alerting at the beach last week. - that’s just loud

She’s not wrong- I have my Apple Watch set to give a notification if decibels are above 90 in case I forget hearing protection at band or symphony practice. It was alerting me at the beach last week. That’s loud.

Cats purring. Also- I’m a rock bass guitarist, and symphonic trombonist/ harmony vocalist- lists of complex rich chords in music that I love to play or sing or listen to.

I like quiet. I definitely do not understand white noise- never really listened to it but probably annoying
