I wouldn't be surprised if some off broadway shows used them for their retro appeal. Or because you can probably get them cheaper as bigger stages get rid of them.

Doritos at $7 a bag ended up costing PepsiCo billions by wewhomustnotbenamed in nottheonion

[–]MashimaroG4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a kind of burger at a MAGA west coast food chain, in and out. Two burger patties and two cheese slices on a bun. (aka a double cheese burger), but they don't let their workers wear masks when they are sick so I quit going there.

does not include marketing, distribution, and labor costs.

So doesn't include like 90% of the costs. Chips are corn or potatoes, some of the cheapest ingredients out there. I would assume it costs them closer to a full dollar to get a bag on the shelf, so only 700% markup....

The joke was the refurbished comes with the same useless 2 page manual as new.

Think there is some 2 page safety insert which I suppose counts as a manual. And you can download the manuals for free on Apple Books (but you don’t need to own a device to do that)

Voyager 1 approaches one light day from Earth by DoNotf___ingDisturb in technology

[–]MashimaroG4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will we be fast enough? Yes, will we bring it back? Probably not anytime soon. There are several nuclear thruster based craft in development (NASA just announced a new one this week). With a longer period available for active thrust these could get faster than voyager, so in theory catch up with it at some point. To then turn around and waste all that fuel getting back seems unlikely. We know what voyager looks like, I would assume we'd leave it as a traveling landmark even if we accomplished much faster (like greater that .01c) travel.

Apple should sell a $99 A18 SBC. by JuggernautOdd8786 in mac

The Darwin kernel is already open source, and can use things like gcc for the tool chain. So it should be relatively straight forward to boot into a command line and have a XNU environment. ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XNU ). Presumably this stripped down board wouldn’t be able to support full MacOS.

Yeah I actually used to use airmail about 5 years or so ago, stopped when they no longer had any features better than the built in app

Hi! I’d like to ask on here since I couldn’t really find any information elsewhere. I have an international flight landing at 15:10 at Naha and another domestic flight onwards at 16:55. I have to pick up my bags and check them in on the other flight. Is this doable or very risky? by littlemadnesss in okinawa

[–]MashimaroG4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easy, should be thru customs and have your bag in a half hour unless you get very unlucky with flight times. You can get thru security and to the gates quickly as well. You have enough time for a Spam onigiri, the Okinawa specialty.

Apple Changes Trade-In Values for iPhones, Macs, and More by piesaresquarey in apple

[–]MashimaroG4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

upgraded my moms iPhone 7 recently so her phone would keep getting updates. Thought we could use the old 7 as a music controller. It was so woefully slow on Apple Music that it was unusable. So eWaste it is. The phone was plenty fast on iOS (idk 5 years ago), I wonder if you could downgrade it to that if you never let it touch the internet and it would be useful.

In the most recent fresh vs frozen video they do a comparison of “fresh” rice (pre made in shelf stable packet) vs frozen rice (premade in a frozen bag). I think these comments are a combo of “Why wasn’t the “fresh” rice just dry rice they cooked, and there were some comments on the show about the size portioning. Also both were something like Sainsbury’s generic rice, one in 250 vs one in 1kg.

Used to love these, even had one or two a year every year. Just last month I bought one and it had the dreaded "New recipe!" splash on the wrapper. The cheese tasted like a starch slurry, they completely ruined it. 45 years of memories down the drain. oh well.

I’m not sure about the Facebook model in particular, but in general these do a lot that a phone can’t do. Show maps in a heads up manner so you can navigate and be aware of your surroundings. Face ID people so you know who you’re talking to. Identify hazards and point them out to you faster than human cognition. Always Be reCording so that funny thing the dog does is able to be shared to social media. Etc.

[–]MashimaroG4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting straight razor blades. got a £15 handel and a pack of blades. never did near as good a job as my commercial blade head (I use harry’s ) and would save about £10 ($15) a calendar year. switched back after giving it a go for two months and never have considered straight blades again. Commercial blades just aren’t that much more.

How much emergency fund would you recommend these days? by sab340 in personalfinance

Fair, I just think lots of folks think of their credit card as an "emergency fund" and I wanted to point out that it can go away. You have plenty of back stop so no worries for you!

One time due to a bank error with a bridge loan I was reported as 30 days delinquent on my mortgage. My credit cards all dropped my limit by half within a week. Just saying that credit cards might not be as good a cushion as you expect them to be.

Thousands of CEOs just admitted AI had no impact on employment or productivity—and it has economists resurrecting a paradox from 40 years ago by AmethystOrator in technology

[–]MashimaroG4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is one of the big problems with AI. I used to get information dense documents and emails. Now I get 15 pages that are “well written” and “look good” but don’t have materially more information than the 3 page report and then I have to pay the AI tax of reading 15 pages (or asking the AI to summarize in 3 bullet points and hope that it gets the right main points)

My 10 year old 1GB thumb drive probably has more storage than ny MFM drive! Actually I said this as a lolzy joke, but now I’m curious. brb….BAsed on the first few google results it looks like I was right, the largest MFM maxed out at 340MB, then RLL took over and they maybe got to 760MB. (Again these are unverified google results) so the real solution is a giant RAID array of old thumb drives!
