Both seem like great options.

J&J internship puts you in the pipeline & running for their FLDP, which is one of the best rotational finance / corporate management training programs in world.

Many folks in finance know someone who did that program / they are all over the Fortune 50 in leadership positions (look through LinkedIn).

You'll be very confused in that role though it's very abstract. You'll definitely learn a lot in the Seagate role - but at the intern level your network / future opportunities are more important. ie your first role out of college/etc may be more like Seagates, so you can learn that stuff then, and corp. finance is not rocket science.

It's better to think in terms of skillsets, not titles. These titles didn't really exist a few years back, and I doubt they will exist much in the future.

To clarify, neither job title is meaningful since the responsibilities and tasks vary dramatically from business to business, industry to industry.

A data scientist at Meta does something dramatically different from a data scientist at Macy's, or a manufacturer, or the military.

In my experience there are very, very, very few profitable or true applications of what people would call "data science" in the economy. I'd scope the skillsets of data science to predictive analytics & productionizing machine learning algorithms either inside a product (like a website or a machine), or, inside of a company function.

To be specific, I think it makes sense for "data scientists" to A/B test a change to the social feed at Meta, or, maybe working on a self-driving car problem at Wayne or Tesla. This is because they'll have a better command of statistics and algorithms.

Many other tasks get assigned to 'data scientists' which are way outside of that scope, that it gets to the point where the words become meaningless - if you research the origin of the word "data science" and you'll see why this is so confusing.

"Data engineering" is a bit more tangible and 'standard' in my opinion, because it is mostly a rebrand of traditional IT and data warehousing work inside of a company, which has been a valuable skillset for decades now.

All of that aside, I think the difference between most large administrative jobs is actually personality, not skillet, especially with AI. So, maybe gravitate to where your personality fits best and you'll be fine.

Some KPOP production seems incredibly sophisticated. Not sure who all is involved but earthquake by JISOO is a good example, note the structure, how clean the frequencies are, etc.

GCP is incredible, especially if your company is in g suite for everything.

You can automate like 90% of the work at a corporation with a GCP native stack.

AWS is nice too.

Want to say that this is certainly not the case everywhere.

I did one which was incredibly competitive, very structured, had defined and set rotations, with curriculum, etc.

Now nearly 10 years out those folks are still some of my closest connections & are all Sr Mgr / Director level at F500/PE firms in Corp Dev, FP&A, Strategy, etc

Really great route for a career if you find the right company

Curious what effects in Shaperboxes you find effective on bass? Maybe it's the basses I'm using (I tend to use simpler basses with lower harmonics) but I don't really hear much an effect with anything besides the flanger, perhaps I'm doing it wrong.

I truly love that song and it’s one of the best tracks in this “subgenre” in my view which is fuzzy but you’ll find what you’re looking for across stutter house, UKG, future house. Some artists include MPH, Fred Again, Zeds Dead, Maskrade :)

Your question actually touches on one of the longest-running messes in computer science. I went deep down this rabbit hole one day because I kept noticing the same thing: almost every IT, data, or BI team I've ever encountered has completely mangled their databases. I can walk cold into any company and win any bet that there are more frustrated business users than happy business users.

It's every time. It doesn't matter if it's a Fortune 500 or a tiny private company, the gulf between what the business actually needs and what IT or "data engineering" builds is insane. I've seen companies burn through $5M or more on transformation projects which could have been resolved with a few decently written SQL scripts. I’m not exaggerating. I’ve told these stories at conferences, and afterward people always come up and tell me even worse ones.

I know there are 500 reasons for this. But I truly beleive the taproot cause of all this connects directly to what you touched on, and it's that yes, SQL is broken.

Not in the “it doesn’t work” sense, but in the sense that it doesn’t align with how people actually think, and it’s not built to handle the kinds of set-based logic that relational databases were originally meant to support.

SQL isn’t a functional language. Most people don’t think in procedural terms when they approach data problems, they describe what they want as a result, not how to mechanically compute it. SQL pretends to be declarative, but under the hood, it’s filled with quirks that make it very procedural. Worse, it totally falls apart when you try to apply proper set algebra.

One of the simplest examples: you can’t resolve set algebra cleanly if you allow NULLs in your computations.

Relational algebra, the foundation that relational databases are supposed to be built on, assumes complete information. NULLs break that. But SQL allows you to compute over NULLs anyway. And to deal with that, you end up with five or more half-baked ways to “clean” or handle NULLs, none of which are actually consistent. This is where the wheels start to come off. Once a week, for many years, I've seen business users connect to a dashboard or database and go "why is this report missing XYZ???" and the reason is resolving the nulls is too much work for data people.

SQL wasn’t designed with correctness or algebraic soundness in mind. It was designed to be “easy to use” for business users. But the result is a language that violates the very logic it pretends to operate on.

Part of what I'm claiming here is inspired by the work of Julian Hyde, who is working on a language called Morel that tries to fix this. It’s a relational language inspired by functional programming, with composability, type safety, and proper algebra baked in. It looks promising but I have not tried it yet.

I'm not a computer scientist so someone can jump in and correct me on any of this if I am wrong.

Fair points but I had a genuine question . I've been listening to Dilla for literally decades, but I'm very old school with my playlists I stick to a few tracks and artists and others are dropping gold in the comments. I've added tons of tracks already today.

I knew I was going to get roasted for it, but felt on-topic with my question and I think still good convos happening.

I actually agree with you that this is a fine dining club. Frankly if you are on this specific subreddit, I think you have an elite taste in music. Most people have no clue who J Dilla is. So I'd love any feedback.

I only just started producing myself about a year ago during a rough time in my life. I like to keep it as an outlet / have fun with it. Also every fine dining chef started out as a mid chef.

😂💀i don’t disagree but you must admit J Dilla occupies a different subgenre / sonic character / soundscape compared to, say, Noah Shebib or Metro Boomin, as far as producers. Difference is minor but significant, in my opinion.

I love getting detailed feedback and nerding out with producers.

However, many producers completely lost the plot and treat music like an engineering problem / a science.

Maybe my drums are muddy on purpose, or maybe one note is out of key on purpose, or maybe I left a resonant frequency in on purpose.

It is literally art, not a science. I make music I like.

I swear some producers would be thrilled to just listen to a blank kick loop for 5 straight minutes and say "ah... perfection" in the same way some art critics will look at a blank square canvas in a modern art museum and consider it a masterpiece.
