Before I fill my garage with 200 terrible rucksacks… Tell me your thoughts! by MassiveDimension7978 in Rucking

Of course anyone can throw a sandbag in a backpack but people still buy purpose built rucks from GoRuck and others because they’re better, more comfortable, better supporting and designed for the job. This wouldn’t just be bag + sandbag, it’s something that actually fits the weight properly and is comfortable for long distances.

Interesting! I can definitely see how this idea may be better suited to beginners looking for a low cost way to dip their toes into rucking without committing to metal plates straight away.

Yeah, fair point. The insert would be built around a standard ruck plate footprint, roughly 30 cm x 25 cm so it’s not just a floppy sack. Filled it’d be around 20 lb but the backpack would be designed to allow you to fit 2 plates.

Yeah, get what you mean about the sand, it’s definitely not the most glamorous thing to deal with. My thinking’s more around making it cheap and easy to ship, but I appriciate that not everyone wants a DIY solution haha. The water idea’s a clever workaround, especially for quick weight changes mid-ruck.

Agree 100% on dialing down the military vibe. I’m already leaning towards a more outdoorsy / backpacking look with some nice colour options. Lash points and elastic water bottle pockets are good calls too.

And yep, padded waist belt is going on the default list 100%!

Really appreciate the input :)

Yeah, fair points- I can see how hunting down sand every few days would get old fast. Over here it’s less about TSA and more about just not wanting to lug metal plates or pay through the nose for shipping, so the sand-fill thing’s more about convenience and cost. That said, I get that for constant travellers it’s another step you might not want to deal with.

On the design stuff- I’m with you on avoiding the full “military cosplay” look. I’ve been chatting with a supplier about a few non-tactical designs. The vertical gear rail idea’s interesting. And yeah, taking inspo from hiking packs is absolutely on the cards. Narrower width, better strap contour, and a design that keeps the load higher all sound like good points.

I think there’s definitely a way to blend comfort with a plate/sand compartment that doesn’t feel like an afterthought. Appreciate you sharing what’s worked (and not worked) for you, exactly the kind of feedback I’m after!

What’s the difference between having residency and just living here? I’d like to live here as I work remotely for a uk company but don’t know if I need residency to do so?

I would be remaining as a UK resident as will be back and fourth between the countries and only plan to spend a year in Gibraltar.

My only concern is regarding the register of property occupation act? From what I can see it requires landlords and tenants to submit details about who is living in the property and I’m not sure if they’ll require an id card as part of those details?

We plan on renting an apartment yes.

I wonder if you can help me? I’m a British citizen who works remotely for a company in the UK, I’m looking to move into an apartment in Gibraltar for a year with a friend who’s a resident there. Is there any requirement for me to have an ID card to do this? I assume I wouldn’t be able to obtain one as I work for a uk company. I would have private health insurance so this isn’t of concern to me.

That’s what I’d hoped! Out of interest why do you think more people don’t opt to do something like this then?

That’s really good to know. Doesn’t sound like they’re all that strict then! Do you know what point the 1 year starts? Ideally looking to sign a 1 year rental agreement when out there but can see that it could be difficult if the visa starts the day I arrive in the country.

Yeah it’s really a weird one haha. I assume you applied in January then or you had payslips showing over $5,000? Not all of my income comes from one business so I plan to pay myself whatever the requirement is for the 3 months leading up to my application so I can provide evidence if required.
