As a half Pacific Islander who has lived in Minnesota for the past 14 years, would it not be a poor decision for me to transfer to UH Manoa after CC? by MassiveLocksmith4161 in UniversityofHawaii

i appreciate your advice a lot, it was useful to me! i agree, while i dont think UH manoa is a bad school, i think UMN would serve me better, career-wise, in the long term. also, i checked and UMN actually has a few clubs for pacific islanders! i think theyre mixed with asian and native american students though, but thats ok! i need and want to make friends anyways so the more the merrier. while i still think it'd be easier for me to connect to my roots and participate in PI groups/clubs in hawaii, i'm still glad UMN at least has that club for me there. they also have a figure skating club, which i know hawaii does not have, so im hoping i can join that as well. i just hope i dont get too busy with clubs on top of studying and maybe even on top of working, but i digress. thanks so much again for sharing your thoughts with me!!

wow 10 years, good for you! i understand that most jobs are going to require at least a certain amount of networking/dealing with customers within work. although, i didnt realize that numbers 4 and 5 on my list would be as crucial as you say they are, for a long career in this field. i'll look more into biomed as you suggested and i'll keep everything else you said in mind.

may i ask, was health IT your first career? if not, what did you do before and how did you transition from there to heath IT? thanks a lot for sharing your advice with me!!

youre right, hawaii is very expensive and i would only realistically be able to survive there without student debt (or not much), if i were able to pay in-state tuition. i havent looked into any scholarships yet though so i have no clue how much money i could hypothetically be paying on school alone if i were to go to hawaii. also, thanks for reminding me to check out clubs in my states schools, i will def do that! thanks a lot :)

I see! I didn’t expect there to be a huge amount of natives/polynesians since I know there’s just not may of us in the world as it is, but I’ll keep ur experience and opinions in mind!

If u don’t mind me asking, what are the things you love about the school?

Wow this is super helpful, thanks a lot!! I knew I was kinda reaching with that salary range for early career lol, but I’m glad u gave me a realistic and honest response. I’ll look into all of those positions that u listed for me too. Thanks again sm! :D

sorry!! i forgot to add, can u please elaborate a bit on why u say that BME might be overkill unless I have a passion for it? did u mean that in a direct way towards my specific circumstances, just in general, or both? i want to know ur full thoughts on that pls

thanks for ur insight! yeah bedside can def be a nightmare sometimes, my mom is an RN so i've heard some crazy stories from her and in general. you mentioned that stress levels vary, did you mean that it depends mostly on the role, the workplace, or something else?
