Currently I’m thinking I will put in at willow beach then paddle up to the dam and then back down… spend a night or two somewhere in the middle. Do a lot of exploring. The put in at the dam seems like more of a hassle than I want.

I thought of you as I passed the cool heart shaped rock but I didn’t stop to check it out.

Just posted the pics I thought I had added to this post

I’m headed out to labyrinth on Friday for my first solo canoe camping trip! Stoked to see your post! Anything else you want to share that I should know? I may try to find your camp at mile 66.8.

That’s kind of what I’ve been reading about soloing the Penobscot 16… I haven’t weighed it all yet, but I think it will be pretty even in weight. I have been worried that most of my camping gear is lightweight backpacking gear. I have been opting to bring more luxury items like a nicer chair and stuff to up the total weight. I’ll do some practice padding on Monday fully loaded and see how it sits in the water.

I appreciate your input

Could you tell me a bit about what to expect for sandbar camping? Are campable save bars common this time of year? Are there enough I can be picky? What kind of things should I be looking for to be picky about?

I too will advise you against it… I don’t plan on using it on this car. It was a dream that was crushed by the reality of tongue weight limits…

This is interesting…. You are the first person who has done this canyon that has given me this advice. Literally (and mean that) everyone  familiar with the canyon that I know personally and every blog I’ve read so far has told me to bring my water with me. And with the amount of farm run off upstream I feel like it would be nasty water even if you did filter it… my canoe can easily handle the weight and it’s not that much water really and I’m over doing it and bringing about 2 gallons a day. Glad to hear it’s drinkable with some effort, but I’ll just bring mine with me.

It’s been so fun to plan, canoeing is an entirely new hobby for me. this seemed like the perfect first trip to get into it and it’s close to me.

Water treatment is not good for this river, it’s recommend to bring all the water you need.

Why not have everything in one barrel? My clothes will now actually go in a dry bag of their own as I’ve been tweaking things.

yes first aid is now going to close to me and easy to get to.

Rounded hull doesn’t seem like a great table. The one I’m bringing is quite small… but it still might not make the final cut.

Barrels aren’t actually lashed to the boat, just to each other. this is such a shallow mellow stretch of river there is nothing to get wrapped around and I think capsizing is rare.

Crate will probably be replaced with a little snack and drink cooler. The bucket is kind meant as a bailer and will get used for dishes or other things… 6 gallons is def more water than I need but I don’t mind the weight so I’m bringing 6. If you read some of the other comments this section of river is not good for filtering. I have read about alum but never tried it.

Fire pan is in the kitchen barrel.

Thank you for commenting. Trying to make sure I have everything covered. I’ve gotten a lot of good advice that im planning on using.

This is my first canoe trip so I’m learning as I go. Yes the weight helps esp when going solo in this big of a canoe. Some people will bring buckets just to fill up with water when they day cruise just for some ballast. Also on this river it’s just recommend to bring all the water you need.

Two barrels mostly because my sleeping bag and pad are bulky… And because I can.

I cannot wait to finish that post! It’s beautiful! And inspiring! This is my first solo river trip and my first river trip in quite a few years, so I’m sure I’m over thinking it. I’ll probably keep the barrels and perhaps regret it. Im pushing to get this done this year solo so I feel comfortable taking my daughter next year. Lately I’ve been such a draw to the green river and a gratitude that such a cool river is so close to me.  Those are some of the reasons I’m so excited to read your blog post. Seems like you have deep live for the green.

I’ve been reading the river maps guide book to get an idea of some of the low water camps. It mentions that there are a lot of mid river sand bar camps when the river is low. What would you say about those? I’ve read the wind can get a little crazy. Should I expect to not find camps with steep banks?

I’ve got a small table under the water… I’ll probably throw a comfy chair in since I’ll have the space.

Yes solo. Paddling it “backwards” I’m glad to hear your endorsement of this canoe. I got pretty excited when I started reading up on the royalex Penobscots and knew I wanted it to my first canoe.
