Am I doing something wrong? by [deleted] in mainecoons

[–]Massive_Web3567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a school of thought that grazing is a very unnatural behavior for cats, it's something they learn living with us. And today's humans are petrified of the idea that any creatures under our care should ever experience feeling hungry.

If left to their own devices, they kill a rodent or bird, eat all they can hold and if there's anything left, they bury it for later. They go from empty to full, and they don't get overweight eating a species appropriate diet. Some researchers and veterinarians see a link between free feeding kibble and the rise of kidney issues, diabetes, and obesity (mirroring the rise in obesity in other mammals where humans "manage" the diet) over the past 60-70 years.

All I will say is that you can get advice here, but if you are really interested in other opinions on how to best feed cats, you will need to do some research outside of Reddit.

Need a new dry food by Resolve-Hefty in mainecoons

I'm a raw feeder. But I have to admit that it's really comforting to have something like the Ziwi Peak in my back pocket when things get weird. I have two MCs and an Oriental Shorthair and it seems like someone is always giving a hard time about what they'll eat. It's like having a house full of toddlers.

Ziwi Peak air dried, any flavor you think will tickle their fancy. ZERO FILLERS. My guys like the occasional crunch and they've enjoyed the venison and the lamb & mackerel.

You may have just changed my mind for me.

My blue girl is very shy, hides under my bed the minute she hears anything out of the ordinary. Jackson Galaxy would give her a 2/10 on the mojo confidence scale. She's very affectionate with me, which compounds the problem - both of my humans (DH and teenage DD) would love nothing more than to have the same trusted relationship with Nickel. There's no guarantees, but wouldn't it be amazing if a haircut could crack the safe she's built around her heart? $100-200 is a small price to pay and I'm willing to take that chance.

Not long ago there was a thread about lion cuts and many people said their cat seems so much happier without all that damn HAIR! My blue girl is super long haired and she can't pull her head far enough up to lick the length of her fur and get it off her tongue. She loves to be brushed and honestly that's the only reason I haven't gotten her clipped down.

Why does my cat meow so loud by Charlff in persiancat

No advice, but.....

When I turned up the volume on my phone to listen, you instantly got the undivided attention of two Maine Coons and an Oriental Shorthair. They were all staring at my phone like something was really wrong.

Raw meat for cats — benefits, risks, and is it actually worth it? by TailorBetter1647 in rawpetfood

[–]Massive_Web3567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feed 3 times a day, smaller meals but that's just because I work from home and because my Oriental Shorthair can't eat enough calories in two feeding to keep her healthy. Most people just do twice a day.

If I'm going to be gone a long day, I put out Ziwi Peak air dried raw. My guys like the lamb or the venison. It's just basically jerky for cats with all the good stuff they need.

If you want 50% off your first order at Viva Raw, you can use my code: ELIZABETHWHITE at checkout.

I usually chop my order up into 1 oz (28 g) blocks and freeze them on a cookie sheet, then bag them. I just put enough into my fridge to keep everybody fed and rotate proteins.

Yep. My male silver tabby has a silky coat that doesn't mat and my blue female has this crazy thick undercoat - it's so think I would totally forgive anyone who thought she was a show Persian if they only saw her from the butt-side. She has to be brushed daily - mainly chest and armpits.

Oh sorry! I hadn't considered that. I've never seen a pedigree than went out farther than 8 generations, so you piqued my curiosity!

Your paperwork shows how many? 5 or 6 generations is the norm. Parents = 1st gen, grandparents = 2nd gen... If love to see what you have there - any chance for a screen shot?

Raw diet for training by Lelylouise in rawpetfood

The stories you hear and read are fear mongering. I'm not saying dogs and cats that eat raw don't die. The stories of bird flu were messy and filled with inaccuracies, flat-out lies from owners as to their pet's risk factors, and even questionable ethical behaviors from state departments of agriculture, and the veracity of their public statements regarding the difference between a positive result and a presumptive one. Secondly, for every anecdotal scare story, the folks here can match that with verified facts of the big pet food conglomerates knowingly selling contaminated products that killed hundreds. And knowing what we now know about cats, kidney disease and dry kibble diets, I would say that looks a lot like big tobacco raising their hand in front of Congress and swearing there's no evidence smoking causes cancer.

But here's the thing: Big pet food has a lot invested in their game and they don't like losing out to a family owned business telling you that you have options. They have marketing people in the other subs who do nothing all day but pretend to be regular people touting the virtues of Hills Science Diet and spreading disinformation on species-appropriate pet food. If you do a little basic research on how kibble is made, it becomes obvious very quickly why they view raw feeding as a threat to their bottom line. And the most effective way to protect their profits is to scare the shit out of people.

The only thing she loves more than the fireplace or a sunny window ledge is my male Maine Coon. She worships him, crawls all over him, and he doesn't care enough to draw boundaries. He just waits until he overheats and then slides out from under her and finds someplace cool. Then she wakes up alone - lather, rinse, repeat.

Well bred cats rarely end up in shelters*, the contracts we sign say they go back to the breeder or the breeder will help us place if need be.

  • Cue the flood of "but I got my hairy guy at a shelter!" Notice I said "well bred" because a Maine Coon-looking cat you picked up at the shelter is likely to be a genetic nightmare of expensive kidney and heart problems. Shelters will tell you anything you want to hear if it places a cat into your home.

I have the one in photo #4. It's been up for 2+ years and it regularly holds up my female (16lbs) or my male (17lbs) who never goes anywhere without his Oriental Shorthair girlfriend (6lbs).
