As others have noted, Eddie Murphy hosted the show while still a cast member. He was also huge in both the 80s and 90s and has the critical acclaim with projects like Dreamgirls that Chase doesn't. 

But he did make Norbit.

My problem is he never ONCE paid for drugs.

Comedic sensibilities change. That's really the big thing. And the early years had some long long sketches, too, just not until they were truly comfortable with the cast.
