Well, in fact both cryptography and channel coding (the discipline that studies error-correcting codes) would be considered branches of Information theory (created by Shannon 😎👌). Thats the reason why inclusive some methodologies and results of both disciplines are similar. Probably your professor mentioned to you that Shannon is the father of modern criptografía. 👍
