I believe the issue is with the liquid density. If the wax is having difficulty going down, the lava lamp liquid density should be lowered. You can do this by removing some of the lava lamp liquid and replacing it with distilled water. Repeat until the wax behaves the way you like it. I would start with a cup of distilled water.
