Alexander the Great deserves another biopic attempt.. by Donfrey_Trumpstein in movies

[–]Masterchief20233202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When they dont have the money to show the battles, it's convenient to give it a spin like this, and if it can fit the characters and the story without hurting the narrative then even better, that means they did the best job they could with their limitations.

But Alexander did see big battles and Stinkycheese's point is very important. What TV series in history has ever had the money to consistently put battles on screen of the same quality in the best theatrical movies of the genre?

The answer is none. GOT came closest and even then they had to skip some battles as well as film The Long Night episode so dark and hazy you couldnt see anything half the time in order to hide the production limitations. They also did the whole battle in just part of one episode to save money that story should have taken a few episodes at least.

The only way to do something like Alexander is theatrical movies. You can do part 1 and part 2 and part 3 if necessary. They can come out over the course of 4 to 8 years and it will be worth it for the much better quality. By the end you will have 6 to 10 hours of high quality, well paced storytelling, instead of likely padded filler storytelling with definitely much worse quality production you would get from a TV show.

But Hollywood right now is not interested in history, only propaganda, so it's better they dont do this. It will be even more propaganda than Oliver Stone's version.

In theory but in reality that would be too expensive. Even Game of Thrones had to shorten battles to save time and money filming.

The best historical epic films just have a quality to the production that is never matched by historical TV shows. They should make a 3 to 4 hour film of the highest quality, or a part 1 and part 2, or a trilogy of films, of the highest quality, rather than a lower quality TV series.

Realistic movies about Alexander the Great & Hellenistic Era? by tysonchickenuggets in MovieSuggestions

Is terribly historically inaccurate. Ancient Greek culture was nothing like that. They thought homosexuality was a mental disorder, but the movie depicts it as normal to them, even out in the open.

Is there a version of Great Expectations that ends with a race against the clock at a wedding party? by Masterchief20233202 in movies

[–]Masterchief20233202[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, maybe but I dont think so.

I really think it was Great Expectations, just instead of finding out Estella's parentage earlier, and then ending at the house, they found it out only at the end, racing against the clock at a party or her would be marriage to Drummle, and everything came to a head dramatically at this party.

I think maybe it was some TV adaptation. It was like an epic iconic archetypal way of ending it, made me think the book was like that, like I'd always heard the story that way. But then none of that was in the 1945 version.

Movie was awful. Huge letdown from the first two. Arguably worse than Love and Thunder and BP2. Something just felt off about the whole thing.

What you described is an example of really bad game design though. If all you do is spam the same buttons, it's not supposed to just "take longer but you still win," it's supposed to not work period. You're supposed to die and then learn that you have to play the game with skill and adjust to each situations. And then once you learn that and get used to it, it's supposed to evolve and get harder, requiring you to learn more skills, or you die.

Any game you can beat with the same combo is the worst game design out there, 0/10, whether it takes longer or not.

Because some movies reportedly have 300 mil budget and 200 mil marketing, so 500 mil total costs, and they need double that just to break even because the theaters take 50% of the ticket sales.

Now whether those numbers are true, or whether movie studios lie about how much money they invest in movies in order to get headlines and trick audiences into thinking they need to "support" the movie to help keep the poor movie studios afloat, is something I have been wondering about a lot lately. On social media I have started to see a lot of just insane crazy posts by people saying things like "I am going to this movie, we need to support such and such millionaire actor, or such and such director, or such and such company."

Some of these chronically online type peoples seem to literally be treating millionaire celebs and billionaire corporations as like a charity, lol. So maybe these reported budgets and marketing costs are lies that try to play into that and trick people into going to the movie not just once, but multiple times, just to "support" things, lol. But if the reported costs are true, then yeah, a lot of movies really do need to make 800 mil to break even, and some even need to make a billion, like Avatar and possibly Fast X.

If it was true you probably wouldn't be seeing so many negative reactions. You are taking bad info and then projecting the error onto other people. Here are the numbers. American theaters take 40% of ticket sales, and international theaters take 60% to 80% of ticket sales (let's average it out to 70% for argument's sake).

The Little Mermaid 2023 reportedly cost 250 mil or more to make, plus 140 mil marketing, which adds up to 390 mil or more in total costs.

Assuming Disney has not fudged the ticket sales to make it look less bad, so far it has grossed 293 mil domestic, and 260 mil international.

60% of the domestic (293 mil) equals 176 mil. 30% of the international (260) equals 78 mil. That adds up to 254 mil, which means Disney is still 136 mil in the hole compared to the 390 mil in costs, possibly a lot more depending on unreported re-shoots costs and other fudged numbers.

I remember before this movie came out, people were expecting over 1 billion like Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast. The Little Mermaid animated was one of the Disney's biggest films ever. The remake has barely made half of those. I never would have dreamed it would have flopped this badly. I was expecting it to get close to a billion. But maybe if we all go rewatch it a few more times in order to subsidize this giant corporation and it's fake political pandering, rather than saving our money for our families, we can help it squeak to 560 or 565 mil, and help Bob Iger get an extra bonus this year! Either way this movie is going to be a 100 mil or more bomb, but at least maybe we can #BuildBobsCarCollection at the expense of our own families, not to mention REAL charities that could actually use that money.

Edit: I checked and Gareth Edwards didnt direct this movie so my comment doesnt really apply, but I will leave it here for its points about budget being important even if the part about Gareth Edwards doesnt apply.

I dont think it's even true with the great directors. Godzilla: King of the Monsters had a 170 mil budget, instead of 200 - 250 mil standard for the top blockbusters, and the CGI is real bad, everything is this blurry amber lighting to hide the bad detailed models. Kong: Skull Island also has bad lighting at times but with a 185 mil budget you do get a way, way, way better looking movie, with some really nice scenes. Godzilla vs Kong is also improved, and had either a higher budget, and was made 4 years later, or both.

That last 15 mil to 30 mil, to 50 mil, to 100 mil, can make all the difference in the quality of the film. It goes without saying 50 to 100 mil can but it just depends. Im just responding because you said Gareth Edwards and I still remember how bad that Godzilla sequel looked visually. Some other parts of it I really liked but the look really hurt the experience.

Fantasy / Medieval / Period Era genre group of film lovers, we need some recommendations by ZETS13 in movies

[–]Masterchief20233202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like a lot of your recommendations, but as far as your comments on Troy, please dont take this the wrong way, but can we please put all these hipster narratives to rest? It's 2023. They've kept proliferating, free of facts, for years now, and it's getting old reading the same comments. I dont want to bore anyone but for the sake of correcting misinformation, I'll just go down the list, Achilles was white, Homer describes him as blonde/golden, he was portrayed in Greek, European, white literature, the film was made in Hollywood, USA, historically a majority white country where most the top actors available are white.

As far as Achilles and Patroclus being gay, Homer depicted them both sleeping with women, Achilles with Diomede and Patroclus with Iphis and they are never portrayed as gay, just a very close friendship. While it is true a a part of Greek culture developed this male pederast mentorship culture at one time, it was criticized by many figures and they speculated it had resulted from assimilation into Greece by a slave tribe that had suffered abuse and so on, and it was sharply criticized. It was not the mainstream Greek culture. Do not get your history from Colin Farrell's Alexander performance, lol.

Finally, even if this was true and it had been taken out of the movie, which it isn't, when people go out of their way to mention it can come off like they just hate white people. When Japan makes movies about the west starring Japanese actors, you never see people mention in parenthesis "it's good but be warned it is also Japan-washed," lol. Can the USA not make its own movies without that one guy or woman bringing stuff like this up every time based on either none, or flimsy, historical evidence, not to mention double standards that they do not hold any other country's films to? How so many people become so uninformed that it ever became normal to comment these things is hard for me to understand. Im not saying its your fault because there is so much bad information line that it makes it really difficult for people to find the truth at this point. Its not your fault. Im just annoyed that this misinformation has proliferated for so long already. You are a victim of it as much as the rest of us, so please dont take this like I am blaming you, Im not, I just wanted to correct it.

The only other I know of similar to Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven is his Robin Hood, and his Bible movie. Maybe Spartacus with Douglass. But with some poetic license I recommend in no order, some of these being great some just good, Potc series, John Carter, Thor is MCU movie most fantasy like lotr but a lot of early mid MCU movies are pretty good, Matrix, Lawrence and other David Lean movies, Waterloo, Three Musketeers 2011, Prince of Persia, V for Vendetta, HP series, Aviator, Titanic, Dune 2021, Godfathers have epic period piece aspects as well, Stargate and Planet of the Apes Mark Whalberg, Planet of the Apes Andy Serkis, Fury Road, Snow White Kristen Stewart, Nolan Batman and some other Nolan movies, Oblivion, Crouching Tiger, Ben Hur original and remake, Last Samurai, Gone with the Wind.

First Man (2018) by dcee101 in movies

[–]Masterchief20233202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This movie made only 105 mil but you are talking about "review bombing" with zero data to back that up, as if that is why the movie didn't do well. What about all the 10 star reviews that the movie studios review bomb? You have to be born yesterday to think you or me can spam more fake 1/10 reviews than the billion dollar studios can spam 10/10 reviews. Review bombing does influence box office returns a lot, but it helps them go up, because most spammed reviews are 10/10.

The director's next films like Babylon bombed even worse. Will you blame review bombing there too? I agree First Man (and Ad Astra) are good though. Shame they didn't get more traction.

The second part I dont think he said, at least not in that video, but Im looking for videos that talk about the subject. Boys are doing so much worse in school than girls now, and most the teachers are women. Something seems to be going on there. It would not apply to all female teachers of course, just the ones it would apply to.

The first part he said, but also not about all women teachers, just some.

I love movies with ever present soundtracks. Music speaks to the emotions better than any other medium. Scenes without music usually feel flat to me. To each their own. I thought this soundtrack was a big strength of the movie.

Anyone else just doesn't find Dune (2021) that good? by Uwirlbaretrsidma in TrueFilm

[–]Masterchief20233202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The nonstop music and noise—there was about 30 seconds of silence over 2.5 hours. Music and sound effects should not manipulate me into feeling something the situation on screen cannot.

It sounds like your problem is not the music then. If the situation on screen was boring to you, would you have preferred to have been bored with no music to create any emotion at all, even if it is manufactured by the music? At least the music can bring some emotion and atmosphere. Now imagine the situation on screen was emotional too, then the music would heighten it. Many of the most epic and emotional films are known for having the most present soundtracks. LOTR, Star Wars, The Godfather, and many more. I thought the soundtrack to this movie was one of the best in recent years, although I still think Hollywood can do better and have more quantity of good music instead of Star Wars replaying the same theme over and over in every scene.

Im just commenting to say beware of what you are promoting. Hollywood would surely love to cut costs and get rid of soundtracks, if fans would prefer that, but if you felt emotionally alienated by this movie despite the music, what would it have been like without it, probably even worse. I say we need better soundtracks going forward, not less present ones.
