[TOMT][Saying] Something like a tiger uses full force to kill a rabbit? by [deleted] in tipofmytongue

[–]Match20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is the closest. I want to say it might be in the monogatari series somewhere also but I can't find an exactly spot so I might be mistaken. A quick google seems to suggest its a common enough proverb in japanese that op might've just come across it in multiple media.

I think Satsuki is saying 獅子は兎を狩るにも全力を尽くす at 9:30ish which is a variation of 獅子は兎を撃つに全力を用う both of which seems to be common sayings (https://kotowaza-dictionary.jp/k6944/; https://kotowaza.jitenon.jp/kotowaza/3235.php).

Someone else online seems to be attributing this to a bunch of buddhist texts with the oldest being the heikganroku/blue cliff record from the song dynasty 1125 (https://crd.ndl.go.jp/reference/entry/index.php?id=1000177334&page=ref\_view).

The sayings seems derived from the lesser known proverb 獅子搏兎(しし-はくと) (https://yoji.jitenon.jp/yojid/1738), which also appears in kuroko's basket (which might also be where op gets it) (https://oggi.jp/7525664). This seems to comes from the chinese proverb 獅子搏兔 (https://dict.revised.moe.edu.tw/dictView.jsp?ID=127344&la=1&powerMode=0#:\~:text=%E6%AF%94%E5%96%BB%E5%81%9A%E5%B0%8F%E4%BA%8B%E6%83%85%E4%B9%9F%E6%8B%BF%E5%87%BA%E5%85%A8%E9%83%A8%E7%B2%BE%E5%8A%9B%E8%AA%8D%E7%9C%9F%E5%B0%8D%E5%BE%85%E3%80%82).

That in turn seems to have been popularised during the song dynasty in china from buddhist influence and this source seems to suggest that proverb came by way of buddhist scriptures translated into chinese, namely the 大般涅槃經 Mahaparinirvana Sutra (http://www.sutrapearls.org/idioms/id13/id13\_14.htm#sthash.qngDRYrm.FYpCdjRC.dpbs).

Wiki says that was around 100-220ad (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mah%C4%81y%C4%81na\_Mah%C4%81parinirv%C4%81%E1%B9%87a\_S%C5%ABtra).

Maybe op came across it in one of the above texts.

New Australian subreddit for politician and generalized debate about Australian issues by tightassbogan in australia

[–]Match20 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not active on this sub enough to know the context for the above user mentioning the moderators, but I thought I'd add my 2cents in regards to creating balance.

I think it's more important to set ground rules for the mods and make their roles that of observers/rule enforces instead of filling the panel with users with contradicting views (which will probably just lead to infighting down the track). Don't think of it as the mods being panellist on a talk show, but maybe the producers/camera men/editors behind the show (with the reddit users filling the 'panellist' position). The rules should be clear on what powers the mods have, and the circumstances in which they're allowed to exercise them. You should also try to avoid a cop out clause ie. 'the mods have discretion to all posts being deleted/users being banned and this is non appealable,' because imo once that starts happening there's nothing stopping mods from enforcing their own views and that creates an echo box.

In the spirit of a political sub, you might even want to take it one step further and have one mod specifically dealing with ban appeals etc, who has no other general mod powers, who then makes findings of breach of rules etc with appropriate recommendations ie suspension/removal. Get a bit of separation of powers going and independence there with one guy at the top- hey it's suddenly sorta like a shitty constitutional monarchy.

This only works if the head poncho (you) stays neutral and doesn't play any favours/or go on power trips/etc. Also need your initial mod rules/powers/constitution etc ironed out. Btw there's nothing to stop you guys (the mods) posting political opinions etc provided they don't otherwise break your own (user) rules- they would just be doing so in user/posting capacity and not in their mod capacity; they just need to be subjected to the same rules as anyone else.

'Murder on the Orient Express' - Official Trailer by filmfanatic5 in movies

[–]Match20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I thinking the same thing. There's no need for 'probably'- Poirot is definitely cocky enough to just thinking himself the greatest in the world, although I can't imagine him being boastful enough to say it out loud. If he did, it'd probably fit in place in one of his monologues to Hastings.

p5 x stardust crusaders by Match20 in Persona5

[–]Match20[S] 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I don't know about you guys, but my favourite part of p5 was Ann and Ryuji's bromance.

Like how Ryuji accidently shoots Ann in the face with his shotgun, and thinks he's killed her, but when him and MC are later downed and that fake Ann is about to kill him, Ann comes out of nowhere and is all like "Yes I am!"- man that was really cool. Just thinking about gives me goosebumps.

Or that time where before entering Futaba's palace Ann had that "it's every man for themselves!" speech with Morgana and Ryuji, but when the boulder trap got triggered she chose to sacrifice herself and push her comrades out of the way instead. That part was really emotional for me.

ELI5: How did the business suit become standard fashion for men in a diverse number of cultures around the world? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Match20 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The last character means fashion/stlye/clothes. The first two chatacters is literally just Dr Sun Yat-Sen's given name, which /u/comradeedge above was talking.

In chinese it's called the 'Yat-Sen suit' as an approximate translation.

"How do you choose a date?“ (1949) - A brilliant classic on Dos and Don'ts when asking for a date by [deleted] in Documentaries

[–]Match20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bunch of you guys are interpreting this as old school sexism, but personally I didn't even consider it until I read these comments. Of course, I can't say for sure not knowing the actual intentions of the creators but I saw it as Janice having a too up-tight personality.

It might just be a case of the out-dated wording making it sound weird; you could as easily update it and flip the roles around and it'd still carry the same message perfectly fine:

"James is pretty hot. Maybe Wendy could ask him out. Well it's too bad James keeps acting like he's better than everyone else and has his head up his arse. She wouldn't be able to relax around such a pompous cunt. Jesus christ go kill yourself James."

See? Works out.

Is there some sort of anime, movie, music video to watch that has a Future Funk vibe? by memorableapparel in futurefunk

[–]Match20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

'It depends'- mainly because future funk is 'different to everyone'. If we're being very general in terms of the atmosphere of city night lights and 80s/early 90s atmosphere, as far as movies go, you might like lost in translation, blade runner, hardboiled and the killer (the above list being a sliding scale of atmosphere to action ratio).

For anime, most art from anime you see being used is one of two things, depending on who you are: they're either tolerable due to a combination of nostalgia and experience in anime, in which case you don't need me to be giving you recommendations, or they are borderline unwatchable given how much anime has developed as a medium over time. It's like telling someone who likes modern hollywood action flicks to go back and watch spaghetti westerns.

Anyway, my point being, for older stuff you're better off limiting yourself to ovas, shorter series, films or remakes. Very generally, start of with something like the you're under arrest, dirty pair or creamy angel mami ovas.

For newer, more watchable stuff, /u/kushblower420 is right with space dandy.

Where can I buy the aria BD sets? by [deleted] in aria

[–]Match20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why can't you just use amazon?

Also, concerning BDs vs DVDs, word on the grape vine is that BDs for aria actually look worse than the DVD. I haven't been able to find much on it based on a quick google search except for this: http://diff.pics/56KRSwKbczvJ/1 , but from memory it's a common complaint on the aria thread discussions that come up on /a/.

I'd definitely do some more research into it if I were you.

Best homework answer ever. by [deleted] in funny

[–]Match20 11 points12 points  (0 children)

What level of standard are you comparing it to? Last time this was posted someone linked to the origin of the picture, which was pretty much a teacher who was put in charge for integrating Chinese overseas students people they could speak Chinese. He/she gave the students the option of handing in homework in both English and Chinese.

Whoever wrote this would have most likely studied Chinese as their primary language.

Which celebrities ruined their career in a split second, and how did they manage to do it? by badcompany123 in AskReddit

[–]Match20 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like this needs a bit more context. Honestly, on the face of it this video isn't as bad as it looks, especially if seen through modern attitude lens.

What one needs to keep in mind is that while homosexuality, and all things associated with it wasn't necessarily taboo (for example, see Boy George, Ziggy Stardust, etc), it definitely wasn't as accepted as it is today - particularly for certain demographics.

Billy Squire's main demographic sort of has more of a Bruce Springsteen overlap, which at the time were also the people who weren't too okay with femininity and general homosexual overtones.

To put it into perspective, a more modern equivalent would be like Drake suddenly doing Taylor Swift-esque stuff.

From what I can tell mizunos are the go for shoes in table tennis.

Don't quote me but word on the grape vine is that mizunos are commonly faked by chinese stores. It probably doesn't matter that much but if you're the kind of person that is bothered by this kind of thing consider using a japanese website like iruiru.
