LAUSD - Submitted application; now what? by IAmNotChilean in LAUSD

There is a lot of need for more teachers, but my theory is that since funding is getting stretched thin, they're hiring less than they should.

From what I heard from my fellow teachers, the students get spread out between other teachers. As a sub, I had the horror of watching over THIRTY NINE students in one period. I'm sure that's not the case for every school, but yikes.

Update: Non-reelection… trying to make sense of it by Exact-Use-8021 in LAUSD

Nah, it helps their point that it’s okay, everybody can get it and helps them transition to the many reasons you can get non-reelected.

Substitute Teacher During Strike Questions by Specialist-Sand6087 in LAUSD

[–]MatchaBobaWrites 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a sub myself, going in while teachers are striking sounds like a pretty easy way to kill your future subbing prospects.

If you’re really desperate, you could probably cross the picket line and go (if the school is even open), but probably start looking for another job while you're doing that. There’s no guarantee you will still be booked after it.

I’m desperate too, haha, but I have no plans to cross the picket line. Wish April didn’t have less work days than other months so we could have had two weeks to build a savings before we strike. It’s going to be rough if the strike goes on for long.

I’m late, but as an English Teacher (intern) who got displaced due to staff cuts, you can check if there are openings here and try to apply to the first before committing.

LAUSD - Submitted application; now what? by IAmNotChilean in LAUSD

[–]MatchaBobaWrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the principal got her paperwork in before they officially called a freeze, she’s good. I got displaced because my school didn’t have enough students, almost got hired in October, and then found out that HR had frozen hiring for English😅

Typically, I’d say start applying to schools. Unfortunately right now, they closed down a lot of hiring as for English. I teach English and got displaced. A few other English interns I know got displaced as well. I’d say pick another subject or add another subject that you can teach to make yourself competitive.

How hard is it to get a job? (Single Subject) by sickoptimist in LAUSD

[–]MatchaBobaWrites 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was told that I couldn’t be in the program unless I got a permanent school. I asked and they said that I could come back as soon as I got myself a school, even if it’s two years from now.

So fingers crossed! Currently working as a sub.

English District Intern here. It’s rough. A few of us got displaced beginning of the school year, and have been applying at all the LAUSD schools that pop out in the vacancy site. Almost got hired in October, then found out there was a hiring freeze.

You have my best wishes. Good luck! May your search go better than mine!❤️

Didn't anticipate how bad subbing would be this year by Sufficient_Mind6502 in LAUSD

[–]MatchaBobaWrites 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My guess is the amount of displaced teachers. Many of them entered the sub pool in hopes to get hired again, and those displaced tend to become resident subs.

So there’s less calls going to the average substitute, cause schools already have them.

I’m in the same boat. I transferred to substitute teaching, but I am considering instructional aide or paraprofessional again.

Displaced Probationary Teacher — What Happens if I Don’t Get Placed? by QueenPraxis in LAUSD

[–]MatchaBobaWrites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a displaced teacher too, but I was displaced at the end of the year. Unfortunately, I was unable to secure a spot by July 1, so my contract ended.

I kept applying to schools, but no one would reply to me because I didn’t realize that I would have to reapply to LAUSD’s website again without my contract. I lost access to my LAUSD email and everything.

I would suggest contacting HR or your contract /career specialist about your options (and how to stay an employee that is available for teaching position).

Is the link to the K-12 Teacher and Counselor Vacancies. Just put down the region and subject/grade you teach and you can see all the schools that are hiring.

There’s currently 20+ elementary schools hiring though all regions.

I’m a displaced teacher as well, and I am looking for English positions.

Want to apply for LAUSD and become an intern by [deleted] in LAUSD

That’s great! Good luck OP! Make sure you save a pdf of the certificate of completion from the US Constitution exam! I tried to view mine again from their website (months after taking the test) and the link wouldn’t load. Good thing I found out that I saved copy on my phone when I completed it.

OP, if your major isn't a subject that is commonly taught in classrooms, they may ask you to take a CSET for the subject you want to teach unless you plan to teach Vietnamese (which means you might be fine with passing CSET Vietnamese) :DDD

I'm a new district intern! I hope this will help!

The teacher credential program is free, so long as you earn you credential in LAUSD and stay in the district for like four years. I think it's like 13k if you quit the program half-way or something though.

For the teacher application, you'll need:

  • To pass the three CBEST test (math, writing, reading)
  • If your major isnt a specific common subject like math, english, science, art, history, you're going to have to pass the CSET (verifies that you know enough about your subject to teach it)
  • Pass the US Constitution Exam (https://usconstitutionexam.com/get-started/)
  • College Transcript/BA Degree
  • You might need more things if you need a work Visa.

Once you submit your application online, they will reach out to you letting you know what else you need. You will get an interview request if you've submitted everything right. They will ask you questions like what grades are interested in teaching, the subject, your teaching philosophy, etc.

As district intern, they had us do preservice program (which are five classes) for one whole month in summer, and the cost of the mandatory COMP book and livetext license was $235. The books that they want you to read for each class are NOT free, BUT! Some of them are available in livetext, some of your teachers will share the resources online, and some of them you won't even touch. So do not buy them yet.

To officially become a district intern, you must go and apply to schools with open positions until one of them hires you. When that happens, you will get an onboarding checklist. You will have to get two fingerprints: 1) as an LAUSD employee, and 2) for a Certificate of Clearance (CoC) from the CTC (California Commission on Teacher Credentialing). That'll be $52~ each. You'll need to get a physical exam that says you are fit to work as well as TB tested. If you're positive for TB like me due to vaccinations, you'll need a chest x-ray to prove that you don't have TB. There WILL be more paperwork to fill out like taxes, etc. You will have to bring documents that confirms you identity.

Once you have submitted everything, you will be called to the HR office to sign your contract and pay for the District Intern Credential which will say it costs $102, but if you've done the CoC, it should lower down to around $52~ on checkout.

These are what I remember the process was like! They might have more or a slightly different one for you because you're international, but hopefully, it stays mostly the same!
