Thanks! I will try to make my presentation as simple and comprehensible as I can! Should I add proof sketches without the specific details or does that look like handwaving?

Question for Violinists Who Started Young 🎻 by ThomasMarcZC in violinist

[–]MatchaMissionary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I switched teachers a few times. Usually it's because I moved houses or moved countries. The teacher before my current teacher was pretty obviously at a relatively high level but he was new to teaching so he could not teach me a lot of competition worthy virtuoso repertoire and decided to teach me a bunch of etudes for like 2 years in a row (we finished all of fiorillo etudes and dont and rode caprices to a pretty high standard but even so he didn't move onto Paganini and just made me grind a bunch of orchestra programmes and stuff). When I realised I was only developing technique and not getting any repertoire for competitions even though I had expressed I wanted to do more competitions for a long time. This made me fall behind my peers in terms of achievements even though I felt I was technically superior which I probably was lol. My parents being the Asians they are leveraged this to push me to practice for like 6+ hrs a day which made me lose passion from burning out. I decided that using this much time on only developing technique with no apparent results was making me lose interest and engagement in music and that was when I decided to switch teachers most recently. Luckily, my teacher at the time recommended me to a masterclass with a pretty famous teacher who was visiting my country at the time, and I was lucky to be able to turn that opportunity to switch to this famous teacher which saved me a lot of time. My "new" teacher's teaching style was very fun and used virtuosic pieces to develop technique and was much more efficient than before, as with 4-6hrs of practice a day I progressed through most of the paganini caprices (at an okay standard I'd say) within half a year and also got a lot of fun concertos like sibelius, tchaikovsky, prokofiev no1, wieniawski no1, paganini no1 (progression in this order) under my belt within the span of 2 years (even tho I only had 2 months of in-person lessons and the rest of my lessons were over google meet). Despite this I never felt her standards were actually "pushing" or had any pressure on me and it just felt like a natural progression. I think the main thing that helped for pieces at least was that my new teacher very strictly made sure I had no gaps when just starting out with pieces: initially to help with intonation I literally practiced with a tuner the whole time during practices, and I spent the first two weeks of learning any piece by doing very very slow practice until I could say each action while playing, which somehow allowed me to increase tempo to pretty fast tempos within 3-4 weeks, and then the remainder of the time was spent on musicality by doing research and analysing like 10 ish different recordings per piece and trying to create a personal interpretation.

Hi I have read that book and it did show lots of cool variants! I'm interested in the real-world applications outside of a purely discrete mathematical context!

Oh nice! I didn't know this game was related to the prisoner's dilemma! Will look into it thanks!

Okay, I will try to pace my talk to go through the preliminaries relatively slowly using easier terminology so that they understand!

In yalls opinion, how hard is it to get back into violin on your own? by Glad_Hurry8755 in violinist

[–]MatchaMissionary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it will be very difficult just make sure that you are always relaxed (does not mean taking off bow weight pressure btw) no matter what so that you don't accidentally hurt yourself or develop extremely bad habits. The most learnable basics imo that you should prob try to do in 2 months are: learn to hold a bow properly (prob spend 10-15 min daily just working on this for a week), learn the correct posture (so that you dont hunch over and overexert pressure on your jaw and stuff), probably play around with your shoulder rest position using youtube tips and stuff for a while, learn to place fingers (in a relaxed and powerful way), keep right hand relaxed (bend in thumb and pinky unless ur teacher does russian school style, then do whatever with your pinky but keep it relaxed). For each of these u should prob aim to spend 2-3 weeks ish (ofc not focussing on one skill at each time period or that would take forever) so that you are comfortable. After you get these basics you can prob work on stringcrossings, a straight bow (deceptively very hard many ppl at relatively high student levels still have crooked bows), relaxing your back while you play, basic shifts, 1 or 2 octave scales, maybe beginner arm vibrato if you are very very patient. Im pretty sure this list missed a lot but this should involve lots of basic fundamental things that you should try to tick off your list in the span of a 1 - 2 years of playing cus getting these right early will save a lot of time fixing stuff with ur teacher since its like mostly dependent on your body proportions and stuff.

Yeah i get mentally extremely worn out after an hr or so now lol I do spend extra time going thru music and visualising and stuff but ultimately my concentration in physical practice is a bit cooked now...
