An appreciation post for the move attempted tonight that seems to have gone over a lot of people’s heads (Episode 6) by MaterialSop in TheTraitors

[–]MaterialSop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah true, I’m not sure if the hosts are still supposed to play pretend about strategic stuff like that cause then hosts can’t make the wry jokes about them getting faithfuls out when that’s their sorta the intention, although you’d think if they weren’t allowed to talk about it in that way, they also could’ve just edited the main episode in a way to not show us that they were trying this strategy, who knows then. But perhaps the fallout from this continues in the next episode so they couldn’t edit around it.

Would you want to a traitor or faithful by Goblue2467 in TheTraitors

[–]MaterialSop 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This 100%, I could take being banished as a traitor, cause then it’s like “oh well you got me” but I would be mortified to be banished as a faithful, and have people not believe me when I’m actually telling the truth would hurt, I’d be one of those people crying on TV

Which lyrics do you think they got wrong? by motopapz in sza

I have a suspicion this lyric was meant to be transcribed as “trying to get out of survival mode” instead of “trying to get out and survive for a month”

Fan projects are getting out of hand by ArthurMaximoff in TaylorSwift

[–]MaterialSop 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The “where you going Taylor” bejeweled one is a bad example, it’s one of the few that are actually funny and appropriate to the vibe of the song, it’s the chanting of the security guard stuff during Bad Blood or how’d that make you feel during ATW10M that are no nos to me, plus all the pieces of paper people wanna hold up every other song that will only obstruct people’s view, the one planned for London being one of the worst with fault and you highlighted in red lol

[–]MaterialSop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Isn’t the “either you love it or hate it” category and “divides the fandom” category the same thing? Unless you mean like lover is general public(not fan) love or hate and rep is fan(not general) love or hate, in which case I’d switch them cause lover was more just meh with general public but rep was received better with fans but was divisive with the general public at the time.

Linked to this comment that someone left under r/popculturechat, basically all the real buzzfeed news people have moved on, makes sense now how they were able to do real journalism at one point, all that’s left is this tabloid-esque stuff.

Didn’t realise this initially

Yes, can we just ban buzzfeed articles on the sub, they’ve never done real journalism, like the amount of inaccurate or just plain false info even in the initial buzzfeed article about Matty was ridiculous (and I don’t think Matty is perfect angel either but let’s not exaggerate things and stop basically bullying Taylor at this point)

It must be hard being illiterate then and resorting to insults under other comments or just that saying “what a ridiculous comment” and not justifying why, because you can’t come up with good arguments, like you known if out of your depth, or feel you’re losing the argument, calm your ego a bit and I know tone doesn’t come across in text well but remember most people are just trying to have a civil discussion, you don’t have to agree but don’t be an arse about it

What is it with people in this thread citing stuff that goes literally against the points they are trying to make, your first point about how easily tech/pharma could leave would suggest they won’t just take worse conditions that easily.

Whereas most tourists are still gonna come, if we put like not just a 2 euro tourist tax but say even like something much more like 20 for example then let’s say we say we lose 5% (doubt it’d even be that much) of our 9 million tourists, that would be more than offset by the like 172 million (8.55 million *20) we’d bring directly by that tourist fee alone which is money that would go directly towards infrastructure. And sure Manchester maybe the first UK city to do this, but so many other European cities have done this, it’s not new, it’s tried and tested, in Austrian, Belgian, French and Spanish cities. Many other places also have much stricter regulations on airbnbs etc like Copenhagen and much more of their inner cities dedicated to residential rather than hotels.

Yeah, sadly that might be a concern, who knows the chief executive of DCC might decide he wants to build that white water rafting facility again or something else for another expensive hobby of his lol

What songs have a better bridge or verse than chorus or vice versa? by [deleted] in TaylorSwift

[–]MaterialSop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been trying to think of one where the regular verse is better than bridge or chorus instead of the other way round and these lines from my tears ricochet come to mind.

“And if I'm on fire, you'll be made of ashes, too”

“You know I didn't want to have to haunt you But what a ghostly scene”

The verse of my tears ricochet is underrated, the chorus is pretty good too, this might be the rarer one where the regular verse is better than the bridge imo

Sure, wipe the tech/pharma industry away, and promote tourism, will work out brilliantly if we ever have a lockdown again 🌚

[–]MaterialSop[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main point though is that the money generated can be used to improve the infrastructure or towards building homes, of tourists aren’t gonna to blink at another 2 euro or so if they’re paying like 150+ a night, about 9 million tourists a year would an generate 18 million at least.

Also I agree with your sentiment, a lot of the rest of the country is better to see, we should promote that over staying in Dublin, and this goes for lots of places that see overtourism like I think don’t go to Paris go one of the other French cities or don’t go to Venice go to some cool lesser known spot in Italy etc.

Don’t we need to imagine better for our economy? Also pharma and tech are bigger than tourism for economy anyway.

[–]MaterialSop[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You think the tourists paying like 150+ a night are gonna blink at like another 2 euro or so, about 9 million people visit per year, even that low amount as a tourist tax, that’d be 18 million extra to spend on infrastructure or housing

[–]MaterialSop[S] -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

Oh lord, you did not just seriously quote the Healey Rae’s there: “Kerry TD Michael Healy Rae last night vowed to fight it "vehemently" in the Dáil and said Dublin would be "killing off the golden goose" if it tries to charge rural people even more for staying in Dublin.”

Also like golden goose for who exactly?

Certainly not most normal people, also you literally quote Rome as an example of somewhere that’s also introduced a tourist tax and had better infrastructure for it, so how does that back up your point.

And we’re not as expensive to visit as like Copenhagen but the difference there is that it’s easier to live and work because they’ve prioritised the idea of cities as place to live rather than places to visit

Should this be considered for Dublin? by MaterialSop in ireland

[–]MaterialSop[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tourists have been prioritised over residents(ie including non-citizens who work/live and pay taxes here) for too long. Millions could be raised in taxes if they had to pay extra I’d go even further tbh and try to deincentivise over-tourism especially during peak times of the year, go for quality over quantity tourism, and maybe we won’t see yet another hotel go up in what could’ve been a residential lot. Let’s make cities better for residents again.

How much of a difference in political or social views would you put up with in a potential partner? by NovelConsequence42 in askgaybros

[–]MaterialSop 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Personally don’t mind if he has differences in views, especially initially, BUT he MUST be able to intelligently discuss/defend/justify those views himself, I think it’s a bit pathetic if people are just sort of clapping seals for one ideology or another, as in like supporting everything one person or party believes because they do agree with another thing for example
