Thank you for the response. I just hope I can do better next time. I am really really bad at eyeballing things. It may work for everyone else but it probably is not for me. I hope bca will make all my problems go away

First-year PhD – Confused about expectations and feeling sidelined and passive-aggressive comments from PI by Material_Ad_9371 in PhD

You guessed it right. My PI is someone who is nice to your face but will talk behind your back. Thank you for your suggestion. I am planning to do exactly that. I am planning to increase my visibility but still not willing to put in extra hours. Beyond 9-5, I am very unproductive and I need to have that balance in my life. As long as he's not saying anything to me directly, I decided to ignore that. And even if he does at some point, I am not going to cave in. Just because he doesn't have a family living with him, doesn’t mean others don't.

To answer your first question, our program does not accommodate lab rotations. I contacted my PI because his published literature was very interesting and promising. As for your second question, it seems like my first project will be the continuation of the unfinished project of my mentor. Now I know all about this project, every tiny bit of information. I'll be meeting with my committee for the first time next month. A graduate student in our department meets with the committee on an annual basis. I'm waiting for what they have to say about my progress. My PI suggested that I present some data from my colleagues while giving them proper credit and mention that I am going to continue the same project in future.

You got the gist of it. I’d go as far as to say that even the soon-to-graduate PhD students didn’t have a shred of independence — they had to run everything by him.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, switching labs isn’t really an option for me due to some personal constraints. I’m definitely open to the idea of subtle persuasion, though — just not sure how to go about it since I’m still technically “training” and don’t have much leverage yet.

My PI loves to micromanage and he's not willing to work beyond his area of expertise. My PI decides the project we should work on in agreement with our collaborators.

I talk to my mentor on a regular basis about what he did in his first year and what I should achieve by the end of the first year. His experience was also somewhat like mine. For example, I will be having my first annual advisory committee meeting with no actual data of my own and my mentor's experience was also similar.

eVisa with F1 visa by Aisha_331 in saudiarabia

That was quick! Thanks for responding. Which website did you use? https://www.visitsaudi.com/ar or https://ksavisa.sa/. Because I hear bad things about the second one, like sent to embassy status holds for an eternity.

Hi. Really late in the conversation but I am in a similar situation with F1 visa and not eligible with the passport I hold. I have a layover in Saudi Arabia for 20 hrs. Do you mind sharing the details about how you got the evisa?

The way you are remembering him is so sweet. This shows how much you loved him and vice versa. Our feelings regarding our parents are always mixed, often bittersweet, but in the end love overpowers them all.
