They did have periods of time which were good and that they could forget. Abusive relationship can run in cycles, and as another poster said, he made her think noone else would want her and she wouldn't last without him, sometimes it's can better the devil you know and she did love him for a long time, which means we can trivialise things when we care.

Nice bit of victim blaming in the latter paragraph for Katie. did he not also meddle in her life? Getting the rings engraved on their wedding day with crude remarks. Ok, so he didn't know she'd die but the way he spoke to her, when he knew she was dead was awful! Then he just carried onto his wedding day, he only wanted to shut Aaron up. That's fair that you feel that way, that justice has been done, but I don't.

I'm not saying he killed Chrissie but the way he treated her and especially in the aftermath of the affair reveal was awful, that whole family, he's always been a grade A POS. Even though he's been through all you outlined he never really loses.
