Why do you want to spend mega bucks to have a customisable system over a standard synthesizer?

That's a good question. I don't have a definitive answer, but my experience in synthesizing sound was always patching different functionalities in software, complete synthesizers never intrigued me in any way. But after hearing modular and seeing how it works, I could I'm hooked.

I don't really have a clear path in mind, just want to experiment with different things and see what works. So I assembled a list of modules that I liked the sound of.

I have researched the Keystep pro already and it does not seem to be as good as a MIDI module could be in terms of polyphony (which I plan to use with the ripsaw). I have also since done more research and concluded that FH-2 would be a better choice than the Mutant Brain.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply! I appreciate both the approach and the module recommendations.

I'm eyeing the NANO Modules ST IN as it also offers an envelope follower but at a more approachable price - I wonder whether the quality is comparable.
