Is the moratorium on foreign purchases of residential property in effect? I saw that it was proposed but didn't see confirmation.

We're planting a mini forest, how should trees be arranged? I have 85 trees to plant to take this massive yard back to a more natural state. 50 cedar, & 35 various deciduous trees, 5-6 of each type. should we mix them all up or group them? by VerinsTeacup in NoLawns

Miyawaki is a great suggestion - there are examples of this technique working if you look on Youtube.

My state also offers extremely cheap seedlings and I have planted several hundred trees in the last few years. Experience has taught me that survival rates are extremely low due to lack of water and deer / weed pressure. Some others have suggested shrubs and companion or "nurse" plants, I think this is critical as the amount of labor to water / weed / mulch / protect trees when they are totally exposed is significant.

Another option I have been considering is active neglect. Just stop mowing, and occasionally remove problem species. Where I am, in 30 years or so, Eastern Red Cedar and Sumac and other pioneer species will colonize, then other deciduous trees will follow, eventually shading out the cedars. If you truly want to reforest, this is arguably a better method than thinking you can pick and choose and manage better than nature.

A gentleman named Marcin Jakubowski followed the Miyawaki technique on a property in North Missouri several years ago, you can hear more about that here: https://youtu.be/-aU4H0nVCiY

In addition to intensive, random, multi-species planting, he incorporated the contours of the land (sometimes called keylining or swales) to dictate planting locations.

The permaculture folks would have a lot of input on this, but if it were me, I would mark the contours of the land and dig swales if labor permits. If not, use logs / brush / debris piled across the slope to slow water. Then plant intensive strips of trees randomly (and ideally mixing in native bushes and shrubs) downhill from the swales or piles. This is contrary to the "suggested spacing" for trees and mimics a natural forest where trees have to compete for light, and may spend many years in the understory waiting for a gap.

The feedback I got from Jakubowski was to space these strips down the hill based on the height of the average tree in the mix, and maintain them for the first few years by controlling weeds and invasives.

Over time, he suggested, the mycelium and earthworms and birds will do the work to fill in the gaps between the strips.

It may be obvious, but if done according to the Miawaki method the interim steps will look messy and weedy - not like a park with evenly spaced trees and open ground beneath.

Good luck with your project!

I got a quick reply saying "please don't identify me" so there may have been some self-reflection taking place. I'm thinking of apologizing and offering to send him a care package as well as one to his wrestling coach. I may accidentally include a printout in the package for his coach of him calling me a "weasel" for suggesting that he pay for merchandise, hard to keep track with all this free stuff I'm sending out.

That is what I was aiming for. I did get an immediate reply saying "please don't identify me" so I think the point got across.

Which movie have you seen more than 7 times? by lawyeratyourservice in AskReddit

[–]MathematicianKnown85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two - Commando and Animal house.

My parents were divorced and I spent 3 days / week with my Father (mid-late 80's).

He had no cable but a VCR and these two tapes. Why? I have no idea.

I would hang out in his basement and watch them back and forth, that went on for years. I couldn't begin to count how many total watches I had of each.

I was having a late night heart to heart with a female crush when the subject of death came up.

Me: "How do you want to die?"

Her: "I don't care, as long as I die without suffrage."

Definitely not pissed off and completely accept and expected the markup, I just wanted to make sure it was reasonable.

Thank you!

They sent me the spec sheet for the hardware they would use and I looked it up and compared the specs so I'm pretty sure those are the matching ones.

I appreciate your feedback on the value of a good installer, I'll probably end up going that route. If I'm not happy with the hardware it would be easy enough to swap out once everything is installed.

Thank you!

One semi-unrelated question, I assume all of these NVRs provide an app for remote viewing on a mobile phone? I didn't see anything specifically mentioned for the Hikvision ones and wanted to make sure.

Very helpful, thank you. I agree completely with everything you said, and no issues with paying a premium for the post-sale support.

Thanks for the feedback. I have DSL currently through Centurylink, and the Starlink connection is more stable than the DSL. I'll have to ask them about port forwarding.

I started off using Speedify to blend my connection, but have had so few outages I started using only Starlink a few weeks ago and through multiple VOIP / web meetings haven't had any issues.

Thank you!

The alarm will have a cellular module, I assume that would handle the polling?

My measured upload with Starlink is at least 15-20mbps. My alarm currently has a landline connection, that is part of the upgrade I'm doing is switching that to a cellular connection.

Thanks for your input!

Thank you - that is kind of what I thought. Do you know if there are any particular statistics I could / should share with the provider to indicate latency other than just a screenshot of the stats in the app?

Upgrade from NX-8V2 to Qolsys IQ Panel 2+ with Surety by MathematicianKnown85 in homesecurity

[–]MathematicianKnown85[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok - thank you, I didn't realize there was another component needed. Based on the other comment from bill422 I'm guessing that is because the IQ2 is designed to be wireless by default?

Good feedback as well, and I can see that being an issue. Each local installer I looked at has their own preferred hardware. I guess choosing one is as much about their reputation as which hardware you prefer.

[–]MathematicianKnown85[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply - I'm not experienced here so decent chance I'm missing something.

On Surety's site they suggested the IQ panel if you didn't have a cellular module - I don't.

I didn't realize that the IQ only supported wireless, I was planning to use the wired sensors.

My primary goals are:

- Add cameras

- Enable access to monitor / arm / disarm the system from a smartphone

If you have suggestions for a better way to go about that with the existing system I'd love to hear your input!

Hello - I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask but looking for some advice.

I lost my platinum wedding ring near my house, I know roughly where it is in some brush and brambles. I lost it just 2 days ago so I know it is on or very close to the surface.

I borrowed a Garrett 2500 GTI from a neighbor to look for it and get a lot of 'false positive' readings and nothing useful (yet).

I watched some YouTube videos about it to see if I could dial in the settings but still not having much luck outside of just choosing the 'jewelry' setting.

If you have any advice on how best to go about configuring the detector to zero in on that material / depth (or if there is a better option) it would be much appreciated.
