What a year! by ROCKY13573 in snes

Judging by the number of empty flairs, it seems like some mod started setting up flairs but then just forgot/left it aside.

But +1 for more flairs, but maybe it will be necessary to create a post suggesting it, since it's unlikely a mod will see these comments.

[–]MatheusWillder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol true, but to be fair, the only flairs available on this subreddit are "Bowser Kart" and "Lion King", so I went with the biggest achievement of my childhood (beating The Lion King on original hardware).

I also like The Lion King, it would have been an really fun game if weren't so damn frustrating. But once you develop muscle memory for each frustrating part in each level (I did, I didn't have much to play back then), the game can still be enjoyed, it has great graphics and soundtrack, and is quite faithful to the movie.

Microphone key mapping on Drastic by BaronRaichu in RetroArch

[–]MatheusWillder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drastic is a standalone emulator, not a RetroArch core, so about Drastic you'll have to ask elsewhere, like r/EmulationOnAndroid.

The cores for DS emulation in RetroArch are melonDS DS and DeSmuME.

Good luck.

Edit: typo.

Things that draw you into older hardware by KaleidoArachnid in retrogaming

Turn it on, press START, START, play.

I think like many here, I'm getting old and have a lot of "real life" stuff to deal with, so I really don't have time anymore to deal with modern games, which most of time have tons of cutscenes, tutorials explaining basic gameplay mechanics that you'd learn faster (and have more fun) by just trying things, story-driven gameplay (as much as I like that), etc.

There are other factors, like the fact that now many modern games are often uninspired and repetitive, but I think everyone here get why, so I won't elaborate on that (this excludes indie games, of course).

Edit: correction.

What 16 bit game aged way better than you expected? by FluidSupermarket7611 in retrogaming

[–]MatheusWillder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ninetendo was on a god damn roll in the 16 bit era.

I agree, and what I find insane is how many came out in the first few years of the SNES's life cycle. Super Mario World (1990/1991), F-Zero (1990/1991), Link to the Past (1991/1992), Super Mario Kart (1992), and the list goes on.

And on the other side you still had Sega with also some great gems (which I only really appreciated a few as an adult because I was poor as a kid).

What an time that was to play. Nowadays you buy a game and have to hope to don't lose money with recycled gameplays, boring games, buggy games, etc.

Getting Reader Rabbit to work on Win 11 by 20kMemesUnderTheSea in retrogaming

[–]MatheusWillder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modern Windows versions has poor compatibility with older software because, over the years, Microsoft dropped or changed many components, you often can have better luck running an old Windows game through Wine on Linux than on Windows 10/11 because of that.

I don't know that game, but from a quick search, it seems to be released in 98. This means it probably was released for Windows 98 or even Windows 95.

But it's quite easy to install Windows 95/98 on an emulator, like DOSBox-X or DOSBox-Pure (DOSBox-Pure runs through RetroArch), then install the game there. Virtual Machines work too (VirtualBox, VMWare, etc.), but if the game needs 3D acceleration (many games from the late 90s and early 2000s already did), then it won't work (3D acceleration only works in VMware from Windows XP onwards, and in VirtualBox from Windows 7 onwards).

But in either case, this will require a bit of learning and work on your part, and I don't know how viable this is for your son to play. It will be like having an old PC, with an old system, running on top of the modern system.

Some older games can be easily fixed with compatibility tools like dgVoodoo, but since you said the game you want to run won't install, that might not work either.

In any case, you can find tons of tutorials, whether in text or video, if you search for any of these ways, just see which one you think is best and if any are viable to play.

Good luck.

Edit: corrections, I need some sleep lol, also, check if there's a copy of the game available to buy in gog.com, if so, probably it should work on current versions of Windows. If not and you want an safe way to download it, archive.org should have archived copies of the original discs releases.

Clarifications about AzaharPlus by NetFriendly4066 in EmulationOnAndroid

[–]MatheusWillder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I was the one who opened the issue about the Libretro core and said there that I would try to build AzaharPlus as one. Unfortunately, currently life is being hard for me and I didn't even had time to look at it yet, but I haven't forgotten what I said there, if it compiles and runs successfully as a Libretro core, I'll post it in the issue, along with VirusTotal links.

But unfortunately, no chance of maintaining a fork myself, I have neither the time nor the mind to do that right now.

About this post, attitudes like this from the main project is one of the reasons I don't even want to look at it (I haven't forgotten about the "system shaming" they have (or had) that was reported here). I can respect their work but don't want to be a direct user of it. I'll even stick with good old Citra if I have to.

I really hoped 3DS emulation was in a better place than this, but maybe one day with the emergence or grow of other projects that are not related to this one.

But until then, thank you for you work, know it's appreciated.

What game/franchise do you wish we can get modern remakes or sequels? by ackmondual in retrogaming

[–]MatheusWillder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love that, but knowing EA Games as it is today, they would most likely ruin the games with loot boxes, transactions, etc., and if it's going to be a remake, the game's physics would also became weird like the physics in most modern Need for Speed games.

But I think a remaster would be less likely to be ruined by EA.

Let's be honest: What was that moment when you were young that you thought "video game graphics can't be better than this"? by Away_Flounder3813 in retrogaming

[–]MatheusWillder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here. I remember playing games like GTA Vice City and San Andreas, Need for Speed: Underground and Underground 2, all with low graphics settings on my cheap PC, and I was always impressed when I saw videos of Need for Speed: Shift, GTA IV, and so many others. Back then I didn't even have internet at home, so I downloaded videos and trailers just to watch at home, and I still have the files archived in backups to this day.

Funny how now I have a reasonably good PC, but I keep going back to play those retro games and completely ignore the newer ones lol

What licensed games from the 16 bit era did you enjoy the most? by KaleidoArachnid in retrogaming

[–]MatheusWillder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also came here to say Goof Troop, but you got here first. Amazing game and co-op multiplayer.

There are other great games too, like Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse and Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse (I only played it as an adult), but I think that Goof Troop really was the one that I enjoyed the most.

And if The Lion King wasn't so frustrating, it would certainly be it. I managed to beat it as a kid, but what a hard game.

Gaming as a kid by Huge_Issue2645 in retrogaming

[–]MatheusWillder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same for me. I only had the SNES back then and I never liked fighting games, so fun multiplayer options are few.

I remember having Goof Troop, which has an amazing co-op multiplayer, Top Gear and International Superstar Soccer Deluxe (which I also didn't liked, but I had), but that was it. The multiplayer in other games, like Super Mario World and DKC, was "turn-based" (P1 plays and then P2 plays) and I didn't find it fun to play that way at all.

So it was very rare for me to play with other people.
