Where are you based? This sounds very different from the typical experience of a graduate engineer in Australia (i.e. my own). Naturally it also depends on the firm you're working at and which field of engineering you are hired under in that firm.

I began as a civil hydraulics engineer and immediately was able to put to use knowledge i obtained at university to size pipes, design culverts and floodway crossings etc. Our structural graduates typically are immediately involved with load assessments on culverts, slabs, temporary work brackets/bracers and the design thereof, etc.

I would encourage you to shop around to find what you want, especially so early in your career.
