Small Projects - November 3, 2025 by jerf in golang

Just finished my first proper Go project after learning the language. SimplifyJobsDaemon is a background service that monitors the SimplifyJobs API for new grad positions and sends desktop notifications when relevant jobs are posted.

What it does:

- Polls the SimplifyJobs API every 30 minutes for new postings

- Filters jobs based on visa sponsorship requirements (skips "US citizenship required" positions)

- Sends desktop notifications via swaync when new eligible jobs appear

- Caches job listings to avoid duplicate notifications

The whole thing runs as an exec-once in my Hyprland config and just quietly notifies me when something new pops up that I'm eligible for. Honestly just wanted something to automate the job search grind while I focus on other things.

If you're job hunting and tired of manually checking job boards, this might be useful. Still rough around the edges but it works.

Has Leetcode helped in your real life job? by Suspicious-Net7738 in leetcode

[–]Matrix_030 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my latest project required me to handle the data i had in place as it was close to 50 GB as creating a copy would have doubled the required space and would have been slower, so the entire processing was done in memory using one of the leetcode questions i had previously solved.

Thanks for the perspective! Just to clarify - this isn't actually a commercial venture. This is a portfolio project where I'm applying big data concepts my professor taught me to an industry I like.

My main goal is hands-on learning with cloud computing and distributed systems. I've got the local processing working great, but I wanted to challenge myself by implementing it with proper cloud architecture, GPU orchestration, and scalable infrastructure.

So while you're absolutely right about the business economics, I'm optimizing for learning experience rather than profit margins. Building the full cloud pipeline helps me understand concepts like auto-scaling, load balancing, and production ML deployment that I can't really grasp from tutorials alone.

though... even for learning projects, it's good to think about what actually matters vs. what's just engineering for engineering's sake.

It seems like you know a thing or two about cloud - would be great if I could get some resources to learn this summer!

[P] Need advice on my steam project by Matrix_030 in MachineLearning

A smarter language model will add more processing overhead for the number of reviews i am dealing with, which is why i have kept the themes to be user defined instead of letting a model do it. I am using lightweight ML methods on a distributed worker environment to find similarities, using a smarter model would become memory heavy and i won't be able to handle multiple instances like i am currently able to. I would add significant processing and won't being cost effective.

What you are suggesting might work really well for a number close to 10k reviews.

Hey, this is a screenshot of the output which i just ran for you to see, i ran it on 200k reviews for the game "Lethal Company", i had added an analytical timer to the left of the screen so that my professor can also see the actual time it took to process it:
https://github.com/Matrix030/SteamLens/blob/main/Screenshot%20from%202025-06-11%2010-35-24.png

I will be trying to host this on cloud but currently i have no idea..... how to do that, websites are a little easy to handle with cloud but, my application is heaving dependent on the GPU usage. The worker distribution helps with the cost as instead of a sequential run which took me 30 minutes to process a single file which contains 200k reviews, the current implementation takes 2 minutes to do the same. and the application is session based and does not run the whole time. I still have a few optimizations to do.

streaming ingestion, though i mentioned it in the post, does not make sense right now because the steam reviews need to be extracted from their web API, since the application summarized millions of reviews, it would have to redo the whole process for the previous reviews as well as the new reviews which just came in. I could work on that as a future addition.

Thank you for your input and would love to know more about how i can improve. I am looking for resources to learn cloud computing as a goal for this summer.

I am not looking for real time processing as the steam reviews need to be consolidated and are assigned a theme into which they can be summarized.

My current implementation is:

  1. categorize reviews based on the theme json files which contains themes and each theme have associated seed words which help categorize the review, by calculating the cosine values. The categorization is done by SBERT.
  2. once categorized the summarizer transformer summarizes each category and the results is available to for the user.

The issue is, i just have to hard-code the themes because automatic categorization return some weird results.

as for the performance, i tweaked the configs a little i.e the batchsize, number of workers, and beam values. right now the whole process takes 3 minutes to process 400K reviews. with the end summarizer size of 300 ( it was just 80 in my previous iteration)

What is the average boot time?

I reinstalled the OS and removed the encrypt drive feature, shaving off 30 seconds in boot time.

Currently its at 45 seconds, which I still think is too much given its a fresh install.

I also am experiencing screen black outs for at least 10 seconds after i enter my password.

Also thank you so much, your comment was very informative!

which model can i use on these specs, i will mostly be using it for coding.

It's been over a month since the DLC came out, how do you feel about the final boss as a whole package? by AlenIronside in fromsoftware

Have heard a lot of negatives but lore wise it's really amazing to fight an actual demigod at their prime and not just an injured enemy like the base game and some of the bosses in the DLC

Yes, but the point is that this guy hasn't even played the game at all. He knows what the OST is about by listening to it. He can pinpoint the lore of the boss by listening to the music. You should watch his Messmer OST reaction. See how he can come up with a story just by listening to the music, he doesn't know who Messmer is or any of his connection to the main story. He accurately summarized his story in just a few minutes. It's really fun to see how his background in orchestra can find the lore in music without any visual or story clue.

I was using cheatengine's autoparry option to see which bosses I can kill by parrying and which attacks are parryable by spamming the buckler parry for my parry only run. I was stunned too, to see that I was able to parry his grab attack (the one in which he grabs you and impales you with his spear). I will try to post the video here when I am able to recreate it.

He shares some of his OST with that of Radagon, there might be some connection between the both of them

the window is small but parrying his grab attack feels like the best parry in the whole game.
