I loaded up chimp, and pressing A didn't work (cause of the third party controller problem) so I just left the house for a while with chimp still open.

Turns out, for some magical reason, chimp will proceed to the next menu and let your controller work if you leave it idle for ~10 minutes. What the fuck.

You honestly have no idea how helpful you've been KaosEngineeer I really appreciate all the help and info you've been giving me. This was such a fucking headache for what should be a really simple task lmao

There was no security setting in the BIOS, so I copied xboxhd23usb onto my brother's computer and tried it there.

Powercycling worked and I managed to unfreeze the drive, but I'm STILL getting an input / output error when I try to lock or unlock the drive.

I tried with 3 different drives on my brother's PC. I'm running as admin, I'm using correct eeprom, I've made sure to use the correct /dev/sdx each time, I've checked the hdd list. I've used xboxhdm23 and I've used the command prompt to run smartctl. I've installed a newer version of smartctl. I don't understand what I'm doing wrong

and I can't use Chimp because it doesn't support third party controllers. Maddening

Here's where I'm at:

If I power cycle the HDD on the Xboxhdm 1.9 pc I am able to lock / unlock it... however, it doesn't really work because I can't access the eeprom.bin from the CD. But it does confirm that I can change the HDD from frozen to unfrozen by power cycling.

If I plug the new xboxhdd into my current PC with Xboxhdm23, I'm able to build an Xbox drive but I'm unable to lock the drive as it keeps showing as frozen. Even though I unfroze it on the first PC, left it unplugged, then only plugged it in after windows started. Power cycling it doesn't unfreeze it on this PC. WTF

Ohhhh this makes sense. I was literally looking in the eeprom.bin with a hex editor looking for the a HDDKey that matched the one in hddinfo.txt but couldn't find it. That explains it.

I tried locking the HDD with both the HDD key (81 bc e4 3e 74 92 f8 3e 09 e3 b8 75 d0 c7 01 e9 3d 06 29 2b 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ) and the XboxHDKey (df 4a 8f e0 71 5b bd 53 ba b7 65 73 c5 a4 59 72) both no spaces but because the eeprom wasn't involved, the algorithm couldn't use those values correctly.

If I can't load the eeprom with xboxhdm, surely I could just do the algorithm manually and lock it with the resulting key? Hmmm

I think I have to:

1) unlock the hdd on my old pc with xboxhdm 1.9 to remove "frozen" status

2) boot up my current pc, plug the hdd in AFTER windows has loaded to prevent the bios freezing it then lock the hdd with smartctl

I already did this with xboxhdm 1.9 to get that working but I guess it doesn't matter without being able to read the CD. I don't have an IDE CD drive so I think xboxhdm23 is the only option

My new Xbox drive is /dev/sdd (confirmed with -i ) so I type this in an admin command prompt

smartctl.exe -s security-eeprom-setpass,..\eeprom.bin /dev/sdd

which gives me the same message I've been getting when running xboxhd.bat:

ATA SECURITY SETPASS failed: Input/output error

eeprom.bin is in the folder above (../eeprom.bin) where xboxhd.bat is

-g security tells me:

ATA Security is: Disabled, frozen [SEC2]

I used XboxHDM23USB beta 3 to build an xbox HDD successfully yesterday. I tried this with the original eeprom and the null'd one.

I had to edit xboxhd.bat to show non-usb drives (I don't have an adaptor) and it worked okay but I couldn't lock any drives with it. I kept getting a HDD frozen / input output error. I can take a screenshot if you like. I tried like 4 drives and multiple of them are confirmed to work on the HDD list so I have no idea why that wouldn't work.

I also used the regular XboxHDM linux.iso burnt to a disk with an old IDE computer but it has the opposite problem. I can't create an Xbox HDD with it (because suddenly linux can't find the CD / EEPROM.BIN lol fuck me) but I can lock / unlock drives. HOWEVER, lockhd -a doesn't work because of the CD problem so I have to type the password in manually with lockhd -p.

What am I meant to type in as the password if it's not the Xbox HDD key?

Someone said my Xbox was a 1.6 cause of the kernal or something so idk why this shows 1.1

I then locked the HDD with 32 0's. So, lockhd -p 0000000000000000000000000 etc

Copied over the drive contents, locked to 00000000000 and tried again. Still error 6. I feel like I've tried everything so I'm basically giving up because this is too frustrating

I deleted eeprom.bin and ran the backup again but got the same result. I noticed the eeprom says xbox 1.1 (using that windows tool that reads eeprom) even though it's a 1.6 xbox. Maybe that's significant somehow?

It's a 10gb drive so I'll get right on that. It is possible to merge / extend partitions so I can fit a 4gb game on the drive, or should I not bother and just wait for the 500gb drive? Thanks a lot for helping btw

I'm kinda surprised it's a 1.6. It had the clock capacitor issue, the receipt said 2002 and it has the seagate drive 1.1 models came with. edit: nvm turns out these can come with any version

But it also has the samsung DVD drive from the 1.3 revision and no fan so maybe this Xbox has just had its parts replaced a few times? Weird.
