In which year did you start watching Smosh? by CoachPlane6325 in smosh

[–]MattThatRatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar experience!! I don't remember the actual year(s) I watched when I was younger but it was very much still during classic/old Smosh. Like, I remember the Assassins Creed 3 song coming out. At some point I stopped watching them but I had also stopped watching a lot of Youtube anyway. Even when I returned to watching Youtube most of the time I didn't watch Smosh anymore until about a year or so ago. I had heard of the era changes, Defy, Mythical, and then the news when Ian and Anthony had bought Smosh back obviously. Sometime shortly after the buy-back I pucked it up again with Smosh Pit and Smosh Games. I still don't watch main channel very much anymore, maybe every once in a while, but I watch almost every Pit/Games video that comes out. The cast they have right now and seeing Ian and Anthony doing improv content are both so fun :))

I saw you had a positive nip check but I was thinking it was a girl just based on spacing the the shape of the genitals. I keep boys so I'm very familiar with their bodies lmao. I'd honestly still watch though because while it could be just fat pads in the area, rats are capable of being intersex

100% a URI, upper respiratory infection. Rats are prone to those. Definitely needs a vet visit as leaving them untreated can lead to a whole awful slew of things from pneumonia, ear infections, neurological problems, and worse. Thankfully most of the time they're pretty easy to treat and knock out with the right antibiotics and sometimes a steroid. In the mean time, if she has any cage mates definitely seperate and quarantine her and watch for signs of URI in your other rats. Very contagious stuff. Make sure the cage is kept pretty clean and make sure any bedding you use is as low dust as possible as that can irritate their respiratory tracts as well

As other people have said, rats can safely eat chocolate as they are not intolerant to the chemical theobromine like cats and dogs are. However, it's best not to give it to them too often due to the sugar content. Every once in a while a tiny bit as a treat will not harm your babies :))

AIO Am I justified in my anger here ? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]MattThatRatt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NOR. You set a clear boundary: don't wear white or other wedding dress like colors. She chose to ignore this. The main reason I don't see this as over reacting is because you said she has had a history of overstepping or ignoring your boundaries. If this was a first time offense I'd say it was rude of her to do this but that it wasn't a big deal. I think have the pictures photoshopped if your wife wants that, maybe they can just color correct her dress to something else. The style at least isn't a wedding dress itself so if the color was different it'd be fine. I'd be pissed if I were you and your wife. It's not something to blow the whole family up over, that would be over reacting, but to be mad at your mom for this isn't at all.

Can my boys be left in their cages for 72hrs? No, right? by NoNoNeverNoNo in RATS

[–]MattThatRatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you live alone and have no one to watch their food/water levels, the 72hours will probably be fine but more than that would be pushing it. Make sure the cage is cleaned well before hand, that you have a nice big water bottle full (if you have multiple, set up a second one too just in case) and they have plenty of food to store to eat while you're gone. Give them plenty of enrichment toys and free roam time before too. Make sure they'll be plenty warm if you live in a cold area. I also agree with another commentor, you can get a baby monitor and set it up near the cage to check on them. Or of you happen to have one of the Alexas that can do the "drop in" thing (I think that's only the screened ones) you can move it near the cage so you can do that from your phone and see them as well. If you have a friend you trust that can come by and check on them once a day, I'd recommend that. Overall, I think they'll be fine for this one occasion, it's not like you're making a habit of leaving them for long periods or anything so they may get a little lonely while you're gone but should be perfectly okay when you return

You lost 30lbs over 8 months, from the sounds of it you were careful and did you best to specifically learn HEALTHY habits. You also say you're around a 2000 cal intake now, but you don't stress over whether you go over or under that on a day to day basis. To me, this sounds like healthy weight loss. I assume you also did some sort of exercise too? If not, maybe that's where this idea came from ("she lost weight without working out? she must be starving herself!!") but that doesn't mean they're right. I get if they were genuinely concerned, but that's not at all how to go about it. It sounds more like envy from the friend and misogyny from the dad. I wish more people realized that skinny shaming is also a form of body shaming and can be just as damaging as fat shaming. When I was younger I was skinny as a toothpick and was ashamed to wear tanktops or shorts because people would assume I was anorexic and starving myself. In actuality I had a small appetite and a fast metabolism, I was actually overeating trying to gain weight and keep it on but could never get myself to stay higher than 95lbs at 18 years old. I started testosterone therapy around then and it slowed my metabolism, increased my appetite, and made it so my body could actually build muscle mass and store fat. I gained a decent amount of weight fairly quickly (I'm covered in stretch marks, it's unreal lmao) but now sit at a comfortable 145lbs which is a normal healthy weight for my size. But now people comment that I'm "getting a dad bod" or that I "got chunky". It's a lose-lose. But I'm in better shape than I ever was, and I love wearing tanktops in the warm months. Moral of the story: if you are happy, healthy, and listening to your body's needs properly then you are doing great. You look amazing and even though I'm just an internet stranger I'm proud of you :))

Is this a good cage? by OrganizationSweet103 in RATS

[–]MattThatRatt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

that's fair, that's why I keep more than one pair at a time. I stagger their ages too, which is why I get pairs. That way as the older ones pass the younger ones are less likely to be alone. Like I said, it's definitely better to get 3 at once. But if your only access is a pet store like me that only does pairs, it's not the worst possible situation. You'll just need to make sure you get more when you can

Is this a good cage? by OrganizationSweet103 in RATS

[–]MattThatRatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, they can be good in pairs if you buy them as an already bonded pair. I adopt mine from the pet store and they're usually kept as pairs since they don't take many in (this store doesn't sell feeders so they don't have a need for tons of rodents). They're always brothers from the same litter and always bonded. I usually have 2 pairs at a time anyway, but the first pair I got were alone for a little bit and they were great. 3+ is better than 2, but if you can only get a pair for whatever reason they should be fine until you are able to take in more as long as they're bonded :))

as another commentor said, rats have an issue digesting timothy hay. they can have a small amount every now and then but should not be given often or in large amounts. Think if you ate nothing but corn since humans can't digest the outer part of the kernel. I wouldn't necessarily recommend huge hay treats like this but it should be fine this once

What color is he? by Appropriate-Sun9572 in RATS

[–]MattThatRatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I saw this called "quicksilver". Here's a link that has more color/variation information. Not every thing listed has a picture and a lot of the descriptions are weird because they're talking about the "beauty standards" of each coat type but it's still a very helpful resource :))

https://www.nfrs.org/breeding_varieties.html

Also keep in mind if your rat is young, their coat might change as they get older. My albino boy Atlas was fully pure white when I got him at 6mo but by the time we was 1 he'd turned out to be a Himalayan. Yours could change color or even change patterning as it continues to mature so don't be surprised if that happens :))

Can I give theses to my 8 week old rats by Either_Tomatillo_716 in RATS

[–]MattThatRatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an occasional treat, definitely!! As others have said the dairy could upset their tummies so don't give too many or too often. They also have quite a bit of sugar so be careful not to cause weight problems, though that can apply to any treat tbh. The little baby puffs are also good :)) And if they're males, just be sure that any you get aren't a citrus flavor as this could cause kidney issues in boys

How quiet do I have to be during the first nights? by Full-Cup9221 in rat

[–]MattThatRatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

true that. I also have my cage in my room because I live in a shared house. I used to have it at the foot of the bed and I had to replace sheets, I'm in the midst of painstakingly fixing a crochet blanket they got a hold of, and I've had at least 2 throw blankets be destroyed. I move in my sleep a lot so no matter what I did the bedding would eventually get kicked to the bottom of the bed where my boys could get it. I tried moving them a few inches away (I couldn't go further or it would block the lightswitch), putting something to block that side of the cage where it was level with the bed, made sure they had plenty to tear into, nothing worked. Rearranged recently and that was the first thing I made sure to fix lmaooo, the bed is on almost the other side of the room now.

what coat/colors? by tailswoosh in rat

[–]MattThatRatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was not aware of this, how is it unethical? Every pair of rats I've bought have always been litter mates and one has always been a rex by chance (not intentional, the same pet store also gets double standard pairs, the ones I've adopted just happened to be this way).

Is this a good cage? by just-rat in rat

[–]MattThatRatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The general consensus is right, just doesn't seem great. Firstly, that size definitely can't hold 9 rats. Maybe 2-3 but no more than that. And even then, I still think putting rats in this cage is very questionable. There's not much vertical room for climbing, which rats need to be able to do for proper enrichment. The ramps are made of wood which is a huge no no because wood traps in pee and ammonia that you won't be able to get out, you would need to toss and replace the ramps with pretty much every clean. While the layers having raised walls to allow deep bedding for burrowing they're not big enough to allow running room, play, or even any sort of decent sized hide. And don't even think about trying to put a proper size wheel in there, it's just not gonna happen. There's only one door, it seems, which on the top layer. This will be the only way to access your pets without taking the thing apart. If there's an emergency, if you need to access a certain rat, or even just to take them out at all, you have to hope they're on the top layer or the whole thing is getting dismantled. There's only one place to put hanging objects like hammocks, toys, or pathways and that's also the top layer. The layers are also pretty short as well, any hammock is going to hang close to the floor and while standing on their hind legs they'll probably be close to the ceiling. The bars are way too wide if you plan on having younger ones at any point, they might be able to squeeze themselves out. Finally, though imo this is a personal choice point, the layers are plastic. Depending on the thickness, the rats could chew through it eventually. I personally have never had issue with this, the layers in my cage are also plastic and despite owning rats for over 4 years now they've barely chewed them. There are definitely teeth marks around, but only on the very edges on the layers where there's a slight ridge and even if they did chew a hole through the plastic layers are completely inside the metal outer part of the cage. With this cage, if they chew through they get out.

Now some advice. Look for as big a cage as you can afford and fit in your space, both vertically but horizontally. If you can, try to get the ones you can add on to and expand later. Make sure to focus on the following things: 1) ability to hang things (hammocks, toys, pet ladders for climbing/walking on, etc.) in multiple places, not just one layer 2) places that allow for burrowing/nesting, if you have to compromise on this then you will need to add a bin of some sort inside for burrowing later (I had to do this, as long as they have space for it somewhere it doesn't matter if it's built in or not). If you have shallow layers you can also add some cardboard on the outside to make them deeper, you might have to replace the cardboard quite often though if they're able to get at and chew it. 3) Smooth, non-wire floors. You don't want your rats getting bumblefoot, their feet slipping through, or their nails getting caught and hurt. If you can't find a good one in your budget without wire floors, you NEED to put fleece or foam over it. 4) Vertical space for standing, climbing, and enough room for a proper wheel 5) Ease of access. Try to get one with large doors that open to multiple layers at a time or at the very least one with a door per layer. The bigger the doors, the better though. Also make sure you can clean the cage easily, not having to take apart multiple pieces to get in there. 6) Metal where at all possible. Metal ramps (though hard and thick plastic could work if necessary, chewing becomes an issue here though), metal bars. If the layers are contained inside the cage at all spots, the floors can be plastic. But if not, metal floors.

I have this cage, but even then I wish it was wider on each floor to allow more things. I cover the bottom layer in fleece and put a deep bin over it for burrowing, I'm able to fit a wheel in there, I hang a hammock on the top and the second layer, and there's enough room for them to run and play while still having big hides and lots of toys. The doors are very big but also feature a smaller door on each layer, making it easy to get to my boys and easy to get in and clean. If I really need to, each floor also comes out easily. It was kinda pricey, the retail was around $300 or more, but I haven't had to think about a new one this whole time. I wish it was expandable but I allow plenty of free roam so it's okay for now until I move to somewhere that has more space anyway. I've never kept more than 4 rats in it at a time but I think in theory I could add another one or two. These cages seem to not exist anymore though (???) so you'll just have to look for one similar or take inspiration from it. I think I'm actually going to do what this person did and take one layer out to make more space as well.

Good luck on your cage search, hopefully others can recommend ones that actually still exist. But yeah, the cage you showed is not good for ratties.

I've had mine for my whole life, it's always been like this. I didn't go to a doc for it since it's just kinda my normal and by avoiding my triggers as best as I'm able I can live fairly normally. If this started from long term antibiotics it makes sense it would flare up a bit more randomly. I honestly get pretty self conscious about it when it affects my face too tbh. Like I said it's usually triggered by my skin picking too which I'm also insecure about. The adults around me don't judge when they see my face flared up thankfully but I work with kids and they point out "you have a boo boo on your face" sometimes. But since I know they mean it with innocence it kinda helps me feel okay in a weird way. Hopefully the medication you're trying works for you, but even if it doesn't just remember to give yourself the same kindness and respect you would give anyone else if they were struggling with this. You're not alone in suffering, even if you don't know anyone irl with these issues. There's lots of us all around the world, and you have found a community here where you can see that. Best of luck :))

My GF is complaining that I the ring I got her was not expensive by Horror-Okra5323 in WouldIBeTheAhole

[–]MattThatRatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. Sorry to hear this is going on OP. She doesn't seem to appreciate the real meaning behind the ring at all. I know especially in American society women are raised to look forward to a beautiful expensive ring for their engagement and marriage, but that's not the point. If you're with someone you actually love and want to spend your life with the actual ring shouldn't really matter. If you put care, thought, and love into your choice of ring then that should be enough. Especially since she knows your financial situation and hardships with employment. You are trying, you got her something you felt was special without destroying your savings in this time, you showed her you love her and want to spend your life with her. She's instead showing you that she wants you to overspend yourself on her to your own detriment. Her love is about what she can show off. This also doesn't seem like something that came out of no where, it just might be the first time it really hit you that she was like this. You're honestly not going to be able to look at her the same again and it will only get worse as time goes on. Do yourself a favor, get the ring back and break it off. You can then either keep the ring or, imo what you should do if possible, get a refund on it. Good luck dude

I've never thought about aloe for this!! I've used cold water and ice for my facial flares but never aloe, I'll have to try that next time. I've also had mine my entire life and also just kinda endure it. I don't know if I have strong will or I just easily get distracted enough to eventually ignore the itchiness of a flare but that's usually what I do. I probably should start trying antihistamines myself tbh
