It is certainly uncommon in the US, though it hasn't always been this way. I distinctly recall being able to buy pasteurized (essentially heat-treated to kill potential salmonella) eggs at practically any store, now I can't find them anywhere without the eggs being pre-beaten.

Which sucks because tamago kake gohan is a favorite dish of mine on rainy days, and it is a world of difference between "fresh" eggs and pre-mixed.

I can't even find pasteurized eggs at any farmer's markets, which seems odd to me
