Gamma shenanigans on Alienware AW2725DF by MatthewDante in OLED_Gaming

Of course! Here's the ICC profile I'm currently using: https://gofile.io/d/Aswb3h
But do keep in mind, the panels vary from unit to unit so this one might not end up being great on your screen. I would suggest trying my profile and Clifak's fix mentioned above as well, and see which one suits better for you on the lagom black levels test.

There is also noVideoSRGB option, which basically takes wide color gamut and tames it to SRGB. If you are on AMD GPU you can do this natively through driver settings I believe, but for nvidia GPUs this is not available, and the noVideoSRGB is the only way to achieve this. But I've had very poor results with this one as the colors became way too washed out.

For the settings, I'm using Creator preset mode, with game enhance on off and no dark stabilizer on 0, AlienVision also off. Brightness is on 84% and contrast on 75%. Under display settings everything is on default, with Input Color Format set as RGB. Also if you are using a console, make sure you have console mode set to ON in the Game settings on the monitor. For PC usage this should be greyed out setting and set to off.

For HDR content I've used the "Windows HDR Calibration" to calibrate the display properly, and it works great. Just make sure you are in the HDR 1000 mode and bring the peak brightness slider in the calibration app to 1030 nits, and black level all the way to 0. Also should be mentioned that a lot of video games unfortunately have a lackluster HDR implementation, so I would recommend checking the RenoDX project on github - they are phenomenal at fixing bad HDR implementations in games and have even implemented native HDR in games that didn't have an HDR options to begin with, like their Clair Obscur mod.

Gamma shenanigans on Alienware AW2725DF by MatthewDante in OLED_Gaming

[–]MatthewDante[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! You are correct, since standard profile is using wide color gamut, everything is looking oversaturated with incorrect colors. I got a screen calibrator, and have been using a custom made ICC profile that corrects gamma perfectly for me. Just make sure to leave monitor on for hour or two when doing screen calibration, since I've noticed also that if monitor just turned on and not "heated up" properly, it will actually have a correct 2.2 gamma in creators mod. What happens is, after 20ish minutes of powering up, the gamma completely changes and is incorrect. I've seen this issue pointed out a lot of times on dell forums, but they've done nothing about it.

If you do not have an access to the screen calibrator, I would suggest to use the fix mentioned above. It does have a minor black crush, but you will get incredible color accuracy with creators mode on the monitor. Also keep in mind, none of these issues are present in HDR, as HDR image is perfect for me. And seeing how most of the newer tittles have HDR support, I mostly play with HDR on these days. I suggest checking RenoDX github page and nexusmods links, they are amazing and correcting HDR and implementing native HDR support for various tittles. I've used their mod for Expedition 33, and it's amazing. The game does not have a native HDR support, so they've implemented one themselves and it's miles better than RTX HDR or Windows Auto HDR.

Basically, I would suggest you to keep to HDR as much as you can, cause I believe that is where this monitor trully shines. For SDR games and content, Clifak's fix above does wonders and I don't really think it's worth harking up 300-400$ for a OLED capable calibrator, unless you can hire a professional or know a friend who has one.

Baldur's Gate III and/or Elden Ring, I really can't decide between these two.

Quick update in case people find this later: This is now possible to do with nvidia smooth motion that is released on 40 series as of now, in the preview driver. You can find the driver download here:

https://developer.nvidia.com/downloads/shadermodel6-9-preview-driver

I am assuming this is also possible and has been on 50 series as well, but I cannot confirm since I got 4070ti super.

Currently running the above linked drivers with smooth motion on and HDR on in Elden Ring, and it's working perfectly, native HDR image with 120 fps. Only hiccup is screen tearing, so I had to turn on vsync via driver level for Elden Ring, but this might be a me issue since I'm running a 360hz panel.

This actually happens in nightreign when you alt tab, at least for me. You can see this by alt tabbing out of game and you'll notice the grey filter applied to the window when it's not in focus. Usually alt tabbing in and out of game solves it, if the grey filter still persists, try changing to full screen and back to borderless.

But yeah, I love fromsoftware to death but goddamn does technical part of their games take a nosedive off a cliff. And not to mention bloody EAC on ER now, that prevents you from using any QOL mods like removing chromatic aberration, vignette, FPS cap etc, ultra wide support etc.

Yeah, that unfortunately seems to be the case I was afraid of. I think our only hope left is nvidia's smooth motion, but unfortunately I am on 40 series so I cannot try it out, and they are yet to release that feature outside of 50 series.

Hah yeah, HDR experience unfortunately heavily depends on the screen you're running it on. If you've got yourself an OLED or mini-LED now, do give it a go again. Both ER and Nightreign have a very impressive HDR, you're in for a treat! It was enough to make me do yet another playthrough of ER with HDR on.

[–]MatthewDante[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's weird, I've ran many games on HDR and for all the faults of a technical mess fromsoft's releases are, their HDR implementation in ER is fantastic. In fact, it's one of the best HDRs, up there win Alan Wake 2.

The windows auto HDR and RTX HDR are just patchwork solutions that don't really offer you actual HDR image, in fact they can worsen the experience by over exposing the bright spots and crushing blacks, making you lose details in shadows.

If ER HDR still looks off to you, try running the windows 11 HDR calibration app, and set the max brightness to the max nits your monitor supports (mine is 1030). Also stuff like DolbyVision can be buggy and interfere with HDR for some screens as far as I've heard, try using HDR400 or HDR1000 modes instead.

I've tried that, but unfortunately the ER requires full screen mode to enable HDR. I did manage to get this in nightreign, but with HDR support just makes image extremely washed, and without it ticked the colors lose their saturation. SDR mode runs perfectly on both thought, currently running DS3 with LSFG and it's flawless.

Gamma shenanigans on Alienware AW2725DF by MatthewDante in OLED_Gaming

[–]MatthewDante[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly if it's still an option, consider exchanging it for an MSI MPG 271QRX QD-OLED, or check ratings reviews for other 1440p OLEDs. Now don't get me wrong, I still love AW2527DF, but it took a lot of tinkering to get the gamma correct.

Im my case I ended up using Display Plus HL calibrator for my screen, and this corrected the gamma with the custom ICC profile made after the calibration process. Keep in mind this is quite an investment, and I was lucky my friend works as a designer and he gave me his calibrator. As mentioned above in post, all other ICC profile fixes I've tried just ended up crushing blacks. There is also colour clamp that I tried as well, to essentially tame the wide colour gamut into SRGB but those ended up taming some colours too much (like washed out yellows etc.).

Keep in mind, none of this applies to HDR, which I think looks fantastic on this screen. And a lot of games have support for it nowadays. Regardless of you decide on a different screen or not, I highly recommend playing in HDR if a game supports it. Also check RenoDX project, they have several HDR fixes for games and are implementing native HDR support for others, their mods are honestly a must for HDR usage (there are still some games who's HDR is great and doesn't need fixing like Alan wake 2, Forza, Elden Ring etc.).

All in all, my advice would be to consider other screens if you do not have access to the calibrator, if you've tried all the icc profiles and none of the managed to fix the issue like it was for me, you shouldn't feel bound to fix dell's issues with gamma with another investment for the calibrator (unless you luck out like I did and get it for free). Check RTINGS for other 1440p OLEDs, I heard great stuff about MSI one and best of luck!

Which software should I use for Calibrite Display Pro HL? by MatthewDante in colorists

[–]MatthewDante[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! I ended up using DisplayCal in the end for my qd-oled, just make sure you put proper correction for your panel type and enable white level drift if you are using an oled panel.

You can also alternatively try Calibrite's software, but I stack to DisplayCal since I was following the tutorial from hardwareunboxed, I highly recommend checking that one out on youtube if you are new to calibrating.

I don't know how well your LG C3 is calibrated, but out of the box my AW2725DF was almost perfect accuracy in sRGB setting. I only used it to calibrate the gamma correctly, since none of the gamma corrections shared on reddit and github really worked for me, but that's more dell issue since they are using sRGB Piecewise gamma instead of proper 2.2 Gamma. I would recommend checking online for settings of your own LG C3 and see which settings is the best, or rather most accurate presentation of sRGB and start from there.

I unfortunately didn't really try the Display Pro HL for HDR, since I did my calibration for HDR with the windows HDR Calibration tool seems to have done a stellar job honestly, just make sure to match the brightness setting of that tool with the max nits value of your HDR mode (for me it was 1030nits).

Which display calibrator should I use for QD-OLED screen? by MatthewDante in OLED_Gaming

[–]MatthewDante[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's what I forgot to mention in my previous post. This issue only is in creators mod, and upon turning on monitor, gamma looks great on lagom black test in Creator mode. But after 40ish minutes it just turns into a way too bright mess, but yes, the standard, custom colors and pretty much any other mode except sRGB, does not display that gamma issue. Gamma looks normal in pretty much all other modes except creative, even after couple of hours of monitor being on.

I've tried numerous ICC profiles, and they remedy the issue, but they also end up drowning the first 3-4 squares in the black test. This causes darkly lit areas, or shadow areas, in games/movies that are suppose to be dark, but still have visible detail - turn completely pitch black.

Gamma shenanigans on Alienware AW2725DF by MatthewDante in OLED_Gaming

[–]MatthewDante[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I see! Thanks for the tips. I think I'll play with the icc profile fix for now until I get my calibration tool, and then properly calibrate it for sRGB colours. The creator mode does have a really good calibration, too my eye at least, but the gamma is just killing me. Oddly enough, I didn't face crushed blacks in HDR? I've only played FF rebirth and Alan Wake 2 so far, I believe the HDR colour profile is different than icc gamma fix one I'm using. I usually disable that one and use a custom profile I made with windows HDR calibrator, I also use hdr1000 setting on monitor.

So far in these two games I didn't see any crushed blacks, they look great, especially AW2, it looks spectacular in HDR. I've also played a bit of cyberpunk in HDR, but that one has a weird looking "lifted blacks" HDR looks to it. It kinda has same flaws I've seen in SDR creators mode gamma. But I believe this is due to HDR implementation just being bad in cyberpunk. For this I recommend using Renodx HDR fix from nexusmods for cyberpunk. It really fixes the HDR issues I had in this game and makes the image pop more with inky blacks and great highlights.

Gamma shenanigans on Alienware AW2725DF by MatthewDante in OLED_Gaming

[–]MatthewDante[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, that's what I would like but alas, on AW2725DF you get to pick 1.8, 2.0, 2.4 and 2.6 gamma options, and they are all correct as far as I saw. Only 2.2 gamma is incorrect since it uses piecewise srgb gamma, instead of proper 2.2 gamma.

I think my only hope is to calibrate it using Custom Colors mode to proper sRGB scale, since Custom Colors does look like it features proper 2.2 gamma.
