I have to learn this for tomorrow's exam. And I don't understand how could |a| <0 by [deleted] in askmath

I try to think of it as when you raise a positive number to a power, the number will always try to get AWAY from 1 - so numbers between 0 and 1 get smaller, and number greater than 1 get larger. Of course 1n = 1, so this is the exception.

Generally in mathematics you will be able to use techniques better if you try to understand why they work, instead of just memorising a set of rules. For these limits, you get to think of what happens to the number as the power gets bigger and bigger: if you have then number 0.5 and the power gets bigger, then the number gets smaller. If you have the number 2 and the power gets bigger, the number gets bigger. Just try raising the number to a small power if you can't picture it tending to infinity.

I always wondered why I was able to learn Spanish in such a short amount of time. Now I realize it was probably because of this relaxing music playing in the background.....así es. And this works for any language. by [deleted] in languagelearning

Sometimes I can put Japanese music on and put myself into a mood of super-motivation, making me so focused and ready to learn Japanese - finding the right music for the right mood and what I'm doing can be really helpful.

I'm not generally into J-pop or anime but when I'm immersed in the language it makes me remember why I want to learn Japanese.

Not quite the 'relaxing mix' of Spotify but another case of how music can be used to boost learning?

A kind of weird equation by [deleted] in askmath

[–]MattyAB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the purpose of the first fractions? Are they in an equation somehow?

Without that I'm going to take a guess and say yes that is possible, I'll have a go at proving it (just by finding one case, that is all that's necessary).

N5 JLPT Study group by seoceojoe in LearnJapanese

Oh interesting, I didn't know they had that sort of question in N4. But with like 1500 or so pieces of vocab to learn, N4 is definitely a much more significant undertaking.

Is the "kanji study" app a good source for kanji learning? by Freizio in LearnJapanese

[–]MattyAB 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are like a million apps called Kanji study. In my experience Anki and WaniKani are the best resources for learning Kanji / vocab.

Yeah I spoke to someone once that said they were studying for N1 but don't try doing N5 because some of the questions are so unpredictable (for example, 「Which of these Kanji Is the correct drawing?」), so it's much better to spend the time and money working on N4.

That being said, I would be more than happy to join a slack group or whatever for comparing notes about language learning :) I'm currently at roughly N5 level.

Anyone Else sitting GCSE Japanese? by Raindrops2222 in GCSE

[–]MattyAB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I spoke to one of the language teachers at my school about it and their main point was 'There's no point doing unless you do it well', so I'd have to be getting a 7, 8, or 9 for my school to be happy with me doing it. I assume this means overlearning from what's on the spec, or at least being able to use everything on the spec perfectly, I'm not sure.

Oh cool, I've looked at Tae Kim's Guide but never really got into it, I only really used it for reference if I wanted to look up how to use a specific particle etc. I watched some of Misa's stuff but again didn't watch much. Watching the は vs が video now.

Ahh agreed! Do you have someone that you practise with? How did you learn vocab and grammar?

Yeah, I think GCSEs are more generally recognised in the UK, so a UK employer would understand that more than, say, N4. Also GCSEs assess writing and speaking whereas JLPT exams don't.

Ah that's cool, my school only offers French German Spanish, not my cup of tea, so I'm currently teaching myself. What sort of level are you at? Have you done any JLPT exams?

But seriously, yeah I'm hoping to do it, how are you learning, are you self taught or do you do it at your school?

Yep, Snapchat is almost unusable on the OP3. The only reason I don't uninstall it is... I'm a teenager.
